The Cast Of Sabrina The Teenage Witch What They Looked Like In Their First Episode And Now

With the announcement of a new Netflix series of Sabrina the Teenage Witch on the horizon (although this new series will be based on The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and much, much darker), we thought it was worth it to look back at the OG show, starring Melissa Joan Hart and company, which premiered 21 years ago!

When it came to '90s shows, Sabrina stood alone. Sure, she had loads of relationship and typical teenage drama that was the norm for a lot of primetime TV then - and, let's be honest, now - but it was cut with the kind of magic so many of us dream of having. Nothing was ever really that scary in the Sabrina universe, and how cool would it be to shoot sparkles out of your finger and make something magical happen?

And, like most '90s show, we've lost track about the people who filled out TV screen back then. Some of them are definitely still in the public eye, but not nearly as big a deal as they used to be, while others have disappeared. Well, now we've got your answers: here's your 15 fave characters from Sabrina the Teenage Witch, from their first appearance to what they look like now!

15 Melissa Joan Hart (Sabrina Spellman)

As the titular Sabrina, Melissa Joan Hart enjoyed a good run as the teenage witch who was half-mortal and half-witch, even as her character struggled to balance her two identities while living in the Mortal Realm.

While Sabrina Spellman is arguably Hart's best-known character after beginning her career as a child actor with Clarissa Explains It All, she actress hasn't slowed down, even if her popularity has waned a bit. Since Sabrina ended in 2003, she's popped up in a bunch of episodes of popular TV shows, TV movies, and had another successful TV show run for four seasons with Melissa & Joey. In terms of her personal life, the grown-up teenage witch got married, had three sons, and has become surprisingly outspoken when it comes to politics, most recently supporting Gary Johnson of the Libertarian Party during the 2016 presidential election.

14 Beth Broderick (Zelda Spellman)

The stricter of Sabrina's two aunts, Beth Broderick played Aunt Zelda Spellman, the woman with a passion for science and an aptitude for magic. Chances are you probably had a favourite aunt and, if we're being totally honest, Zelda didn't usually come out on top.

As for the actress who played her, Broderick also stuck around with TV, appearing in a variety of forgettable TV movies and popping up for a few stints (or episodes) in major shows like Supernatural, Lost, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and Under the Dome. Like Zelda, Broderick has a way with men, having been married twice, but her hobbies also stack up like her magical counterpart: gourmet cooking, flower arranging, and reading! A philanthropic person through and through, Broderick also founded Momentum, one of the first New York organizations established to assist people suffering from AIDS.

13 Caroline Rhea (Hilda Spellman)

12 Nate Richert (Harvey Kinkle)

That beautiful hair was simply too good to last! Age can do a number on a person, but taking away Harvey Kinkle's (aka Nate Richert's) luscious locks is just too cruel.

As the object - and ultimate soulmate - of Sabrina, Richert's Harvey dropped in and out of our protagonist's life with surprising regularity. It seemed that whenever she was about to move on with someone else, there Harvey was. But hey, it all worked out in the end, right?

Alas, Richert did not make out as well as his fictional counterpart, and has been lying low since Sabrina wrapped in 2003. Since then, he only appeared in three other things, the last in 2006. Instead, he's opted for music and directing, but this is the first we've heard of him in a while!

11 David Lascher (Josh Blackhart)

After Harvey, Sabrina's next serious relationship was with Josh Blackhart, whose last name should tell you how things panned out for the two of them. While Harvey was sweet and a bit of an adorable doofus, Josh was just blah, the human equivalent of mashed potatoes. Plus, there's the whole issue of him having dated Sabrina's roommate Morgan, which would make things extra sticky if he spent the night. Fortunately, Josh left at the end of season six, making way for our next entry on this list!

The guy who played him, David Lascher, popped up in more shorts and even had a few episodes on Melissa Joan Hart's Melissa & Joey, like Beth Broderick and Alimi Ballard! After taking a break from acting from 2002 to 2014, in which he raised three children with his wife, Lascher returned, but the parts haven't exactly been pouring in.

10 Dylan Neal (Aaron Jacobs)

The third and final love interest of Sabrina, we have Aaron Jacobs, played by Dylan Neal. Aaron, and his rushed romantic storyline with our favourite witch, was pushed ahead after David Lascher's departure from the show. Originally, Sabrina was meant to wed - and then stand up - Josh, not Aaron, the mortal and boring band promoter.

Another Canadian transplant (like Caroline Rhea), Neal has gone on to do fairly well for himself, even if his name isn't one you're likely to recognize. He's appeared in quite a few TV shows, as recurring and guest characters, and most recently - and perhaps recognizably - he's popped up in the first and final instalments of the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy as “Bob Adams”, yet another character with two first names.

9 Jenna Leigh Green (Libby Chessler)

Sabrina's enemy, the head cheerleader, and the most popular girl in school, Libby Chessler checked all the boxes, which is why it was so great to see her morph into a geek for one episode! Played by Jenna Leigh Green, who we're sure is much nicer in real life, Libby terrorized Sabrina and schemed to steal Harvey for three whole seasons.

After her turn as the mean girl on the show, it doesn't seem like Green has managed to catch much steam when it comes to here career. Here and there are bit parts in films and one-offs for TV shows, but nothing like the success of some of her costars. With that being said, she DID have a stint on Broadway for the play Wicked, which is certainly nothing to sniff at! However, we can't help feeling that maybe Libby Chessler got a little of what she deserved.

8 Michelle Beaudoin (Jennifer Kelly)

You might not remember Jennifer “Jenny” Kelly, played by Michelle Beaudoin, who was Sabrina's first BFF until she was unceremoniously replaced by Valerie Birkhead after the first season. Allegedly, Beaudoin was written out of the show because producers wanted Sabrina to have an “ethnic friend”, although Valerie heardly qualifies as such. (Melissa Joan Hart, for her part, has stated that characters left the show if there were dramatics behind the scenes, including pay and audience response.)

Since her one-season role as the weird and proud best friend, Beaudoin has gone the way of Nate Richert and, after a few projects, opted to stop acting entirely, with her last credit dated 2006. Since then, she's lived in Europe and her Twitter bio (which boasts a measly 744 followers) reads, “Mom. Cuelr. Tech. Design. Fashion. Film, TV & Theater.” So at least she has interests!

7 Lindsay Sloane (Valerie Birkhead)

A far cry from the super awkward, perpetual loser character of Valerie Birkhead, we have the real-life actress who played her, Lindsay Sloane! Valerine, who popped up in season two and by the beginning of season four (to be replaced by Dreama), was the kind of mopey BFF who would get on your nerves in reality, but was almost endearing when played by Sloane. Plus, she was one of the few who got to learn about Sabrina's witch heritage - and even nabbed a dance with Drew Carey because of it!

Post-Sabrina, Sloane has kept busy, appearing in a ton of shows including Weeds and The Odd Couple, as well as movies like The Other Guys and Horrible Bosses. We're not saying we see awards and the A-list in her future, but it's steady work with some pretty notable names!

6 Soleil Moon Frye (Roxie King)

Prior to her time as the grumpy and gorgeous Roxie King on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Soleil Moon Frye was best known for her time as a child star, most notably as the titular character in the TV show Punky Brewster! (Interestingly, since both Frye and Melissa Joan Hart began their careers as children, the two had known each other since they were 4 years old and desperately wanted to work together. This show provided the perfect opportunity!)

Following her three seasons as Roxie King, Frye opted for voiceover work, which has allowed her to pursue other venture, like an environmentally-conscious children's clothing line, book releases, a hosting gig on the Oprah Winfrey Network, and a line of party planning kits. That plus four children means that while Frye may not be as visible as she once was, she's certainly still busy!

5 Elisa Donovan (Morgan Cavanaugh)

After Sabrina moved to college, it was natural that the writers would want another mean girl to fill Libby's shoes, and so we were given Morgan Cavanaugh, played by Elisa Donovan, who already had experience as the fashion-obsessed b-word on campus, having played Amber in both the Clueless film and TV show!

Donovan has continued to act with some moderation, appearing in a few small film projects as well as TV episodes. Like many on this list, she also guested in an episode of Melissa Joan Hart's show Melissa & Joey, but it seemed that playing the mean girl (although Morgan did mellow out a bit as the show went on) definitely has an expiry date. Now with a daughter, Donovan seems to have chilled out on the acting front a bit and stepped firmly into her role as mom.

4 Martin Mull (Mr. Kraft)

As the vice principal (and later principal) and paramour of both Hilda and Zelda at different points, Willard Kraft caused a lot of awfulness in Sabrina's daily life that had nothing to do with magic. Not to mention his crimes against fashion! Guy was a MAJOR fan of tweed! Interestingly enough, it's later revealed that Mr. Kraft was actually unknowingly in a relationship with three witches throughout his life. Including the Spellman sisters, Mr. Kraft was once divorced by another witch, Lucy!

After his unceremonious departure following the season four finale, Martin Mull, the man behind the tweed suit, has kept busy with various TV show appearances, for differing lengths of time and levels of success, including Two and a Half Men, Arrested Development, Veep, and Life in Pieces. Sounds about how a vice principal would do!

3 Penn Jillette (Drell)

He was only around for a miniscule four episodes, but the character of Drell (played by Penn Jillette) was memorable enough to warrant an entry. As Drell, the powerful head of the Witches Council, the crazy-haired Jillette was a temperamental type who once turned Sabrina's friend Jenny into a grasshopper and would regularly stand up Aunt Hilda throughout their on-and-off relationship.

In real life and nowadays, there is definitely still some fire in Jillette, who outspokenly identifies as an atheist, a skeptic, and a libertarian. Arguably the most prolific former cast member of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Jillette has published multiple books and hosted multiple shows, including with his other half, Teller, forming the magical duo of Penn & Teller. Most recently, a short story of Jillette's was transformed into a segment for the newest season of Netflix's Black Mirror!

2 Alimi Ballard (Quizmaster)

Alimi Ballard's infuriating, occasionally villainous Quizmaster, the man who wouldn't be seen without some blindingly bright satin shirt or other heinous outfit, is actually quite dapper in real life! Also known as Albert, Ballard's character was tasked with teaching Sabrina everything she needed to know in order to obtain her witch's license - however, he was conspicuously absent for when his student goes to get it, at the beginning of season three!

After his stint on Sabrina, Ballard did what most of the other actors on the show did and kept with TV, nabbing roles in crime-style shows like Numb3rs, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and Criminal Minds. Most recently, he's appeared in the Ava Duvernay-directed series Queen Sugar. Not bad for a guy who was only around for a season of Sabrina!

1 China Shavers (Dreama)

Sabrina Spellman went through a lot of friends who became that season's BFF, but almost all of them were mortals - until Dreama came along.

Introduced in the fourth season of the show, Dreama came from the Other Realm and was the protégé of Sabrina, who had to teach her new friend to properly use magic or else lose her Witch's License (totally fair, right?). To call Dreama clumsy and a bit of an airhead would be a diplomatic way of putting it, but we don't get to know her beyond the fourth season, when she disappears! Dreama was portrayed by China Shavers - whose name you probably don't recall and will likely forget afterwards - an actress who, like her costars, went on to more TV work and most recently (and notably) appeared as OJ Simpson's sister Shirley in the award-winning first season of American Crime Story.
