18 Celebs Who Destroyed Their Careers In 2017
We're so accustomed to seeing celebrities at the top of their game. They earn millions every year, collect awards during glitzy ceremonies, enjoy dates with other gorgeous stars and then when the day is done - they can return home to their huge mansions. So what happens when their dream career comes to a crashing end? This year, we have seen many personal dramas go public; often as it actually happens, and these stars will likely struggle to find work ever again.
Many of these scandals all unfolded practically overnight, as Access Hollywood's Michael Lewittes explained, "It's really the ever-expanding Internet, with its immediacy and ease, that's fueling the flames of hot gossip. And with the Internet's instant access comes quasi-addiction. Now, when one needs a quick fix on the famous, you don't need to be near a newsstand. You can sit back, relax and venture online." There's something about watching the best of the best fail that reminds us they are really human after all.
These stars all killed off careers that took them years to build in just moments, and it was all their own doing. For the celebrities named here, it's safe to say the year 2017 will mark the time their five seconds of fame was up.
18 More Than 50 Women Accuse Harvey Weinstein
Early October this year, The New York Times published a story detailing all the claims of harassment made against Harvey Weinstein. Actresses Rose McGowan and Ashley Judd had come forward about their experiences. Days later, executives stated that "in light of new information about misconduct" he was fired from his position at Miramax. Since then more than 50 women have come forward including Angelina Jolie, Cara Delevigne, Gwyneth Paltrow and Game of Thrones actress Lena Heady.
Unable to continue with her marriage following the allegations, his wife, Georgina Chapman, announced that was planning to divorce him. Weinstein said, "I am profoundly devastated. I have lost my wife and kids, whom I love more than anything else." He has also lost his career, as nobody in Hollywood will ever look at him again.
17 Kevin Spacey Has TV Show And Films Pulled From Release
Following the allegations against Kevin Spacey, who was accused of harassing and assaulting young male actors in historical cases, the star of House of Cards revealed he would be taking time out to get the help he needs.
However, for Netflix it was a case of too little too late and a spokesperson for the streaming giant stated, "Media Rights Capital and Netflix are deeply troubled by news concerning Kevin Spacey. In response to revelations, executives from both of our companies arrived to meet with our cast and crew to ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported. As previously scheduled, Kevin Spacey is not working on set at this time."
Christopher Plumber replaced Spacey as the billionaire J Paul Getty in a new thriller movie All the Money. Director Ridley Scott chose to reshoot all of the scenes with Plumber in the role.
16 Playmate Of The Year Dani Mathers Becomes Public Enemy Number 1
When Playmate of the Year Dani Mathers went for a routine gym session at LA Fitness, she posted a photo to her Snapchat that showed an undressed 70-year-old woman in the background and she wrote the caption: "If I can't unsee this then you can't either."
The post quickly went viral and Mathers was called out for body shaming the poor woman. She lost her modeling contracts and also had to appear in court where the judge said she showed no remorse. At Los Angeles County Superior Court she pleaded no contest to a charge of misdemeanour invasion of privacy and was ordered to do community service.
Following an interview with ABC News, she said, "We've had a lot of paparazzi involved in my family life. I had my privacy taken away after I took someone else's. To hide out at my mother's house at age 30 because of something I've done. It just felt really low." We don't think there will be many casting agents knocking on her mother's door anytime soon.
15 Kendall Jenner Appeared In THAT Pepsi Commercial
Kendall Jenner had a glamorous modeling career, a successful fashion line and can command upwards of $250,000 for one Instagram post. Then she starred in a heavily criticized Pepsi commercial where she could be seen joining an activist movement, before breaking away from the crowd and handing a policeman a can of Pepsi - you know the one.
Many said the commercial was tone deaf and a complete contrast of the reality surrounding the Black Lives Matter protestors and police officers. Pepsi and Kendall started trending for all the wrong reasons and she removed any connection to Pepsi from her social media.
During an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, she said, "After I saw the reaction and I read what people had to say about it, I most definitely saw what went wrong… I completely shut down. I have no idea how I'm going to bounce back from it. I don't even know what to do." To make matters worse, Kendall was outed by Caitlyn who told the media that Kendall HAD seen the script before she started shooting. We'll have to see if the reality star can claw back her reputation in 2018.
14 Abby Lee Miller Begins Prison Sentence For Fraud
Abby Lee Miller had her last moments of freedom this year before she was forced to surrender to police and begin a 366-day stretch behind bars. She told Entertainment Tonight that she will spend her last days of freedom with close friends, revealing, "I have some friends coming out from Pittsburgh that have been with me through thick and thin for 20 years before the TV show, so they're gonna come out and we're just gonna maybe reminisce and laugh about the old times."
The ruthless choreographer will serve her time at CI Victorville facility in Victorville, California. Following time served, she will be on probation for two years and can only live in areas approved by her probation officer. Miller had claimed bankruptcy but she was later found to be hiding a $775k income from Dance Moms. She said, "I have to stay busy. If I thought about it every day, I'd just sit around and cry."
13 Taylor Swift Threatens Album Reviewers With Lawsuits
Everyone knew Taylor Swift was prone to some diva-like activity but when she started threatening journalists who dared write about her album Reputation before it's release, it was some shady behavior nobody was too pleased with. If journalists dared to publish their reviews before 5am on the date of the album's release, they would be sued for thousands of dollars.
One source told The Sun, "Taylor has become overbearingly protective of her image. She doesn't feel like she needs to do interviews to sell albums any more. Taylor has seen how Beyonce has managed to sustain a career without doing interviews. But they are very different artists and her team aren't sure it's the wisest choice." Amongst her demands, she also warned journalists they were not allowed to mention the names of her ex-boyfriends - despite references to them all are scattered throughout the album.
The last thing any star needs when they are releasing a new album is the world's press turning against them.
12 Chris Rock Jokes Victims "Cry For Money"
Chris Rock has always been considered a "woke" comedian who isn't afraid to approach the bigger issues but even he went a step too far when he joked about the victims who had come forward about Harvey Weinstein. During a stand up set at Comedy Cellar, New York City, he told a shocked crowd, "They cry (the victim) because they want money."
Page Six reported that one audience member said, "I've seen him before and he was hysterical, but this wasn't funny at all. Nobody was laughing. There were many boos and many women who were telling him he was a sexist pig. Two people got kicked out."
Comedian Jeff Ross was next on the stage and he tried to defuse the tension by joking, "Now that we got that Chris Rock kid out of the way… " It might take awhile for him to bounce back from these cruel comments.
11 Robin Thicke Is Investigated By Child Protection Services
Robin Thicke has tried for many years to win back his wife Paula Patton following allegations he cheated on her with several women. The Blurred Lines singer even released an album in her name (which flopped) and trying to agree on a shared custody agreement of their 6-year-old son Julian.
Then in a shocking from TMZ, Thicke was being investigated by child protection services for using "excessive physical punishment" on his son. The school had also heard that Julian was scared of his father and said he had been spanked on a few occasions. Thicke said, "On a very rare occasion and only as n a last resort, I will use light spanking, but it is consistent with the law." His ex also claimed at Julian's kindergarten graduation, Thicke showed up "drunk" and "hollering" at 8.30am.
Thicke alleged this was a smear campaign launched by his ex-wife but it's quite clear that nobody will be in a rush to collaborate with him again.
10 Kevin Hart's Image As "Perfect Family Man" Is Ruined
Kevin Hart had it all - the Hollywood career, millions in the bank, adoring fans worldwide, the perfect family and an adoring wife, Eniko Parrish, who was expecting their third child. Then the Central Intelligence actor killed off his whole good guy image when he was caught on camera getting very up close and personal with a model in a Las Vegas hotel room.
The model, who claimed they had hooked up three times over three days, told Daily Mail TV, "I did not know he was married. I found out after we already had been together. So I did not know at first. The way he was acting didn't seem like he was married."
Although his wife is clearly heartbroken, a source told People magazine, "She is trying to stay healthy and enjoy her pregnancy, but the latest drama is too much." There might not be too many movie executives rushing to cast him in their next big feature following this scandal.
9 Jennifer Lawrence's Popularity Takes A Nose Dive
Jennifer Lawrence has had quite the year for bad publicity. The one time reigning goofy Queen of Hollywood has been accused of having an affair with Chris Pratt that resulted in his and Anna Faris' divorce, her trippy movie Mother! shocked both critics and fans (not in a good way), and she blamed Trump supporters for Hurricane Irma. Yeah, things haven't gone quite so smoothly for her.
Also, directors have stopped climbing over themselves to cast her as she is apparently a nightmare diva on set. During filming for the biopic Joy, where she plays the Miracle Mop inventor Joy Mangano, she would scream at director David O'Russel, as she told Vogue, “(I) exploded at David and he said 'Genuinely, from the bottom of my heart, I am scared of you. I was f***ing mean on set. I wasn't mean to anybody but David." Being difficult to work with is going to secure a quick way out of Hollywood, JLaw.
8 Empire Star Morocco Omari Mugshot Released When He Did THIS
Empire star Morocco Omari will very likely not be invited back for another season following his arrest for domestic battery after a woman claimed she had been shoved to the ground. The 24-year-old woman said Omari had shoved her several times during an argument that took place in Hyde Park, Chicago. The woman also suffered several scratches to the neck and the chest. When police arrived on the scene it was quite obvious an assault had taken place.
Omari's publicity team tried to salvage his career, as they stated, "(Omari) was brought up by his mother and grandmother and is the proud father of two minor daughters. He has long been an advocate of anti-violence against women." We'll have to see how this one works out for him.
7 Amy Schumer Is Outed As A Serial Joke Thief
Earlier this year, Amy Schumer was outed by other comedians as being a joke thief. They said that Schumer had been taking their jokes for years and she had sought 'inspiration' from the late Patrice O'Neal, as well as Wendy Liebman, Tammy Pescatelli, and Kathleen Madigan.
Wendy Liebman's joke, "You call it 'nagging' I call it listen to what I said the first f****** time" appeared during Schumer's comedy special. Tammy Pescatelli tweeted, "What has always been so amazing to me is that (Schumer) purports to be a feminist and yet steals from other female comedians." She continued, "If we call her on it we are 'jealous' or career shamed. WE want you to do well, just do it with your own material. BTW she blocked me."
Another sketch Schumer had stolen was from Kathleen Madigan's sketch that was a diet plan where people 'slap' the food from your hands. Schumer then copied and created her own sketch called the 'slap chef', which was basically the same thing. And here was us believing Schumer was the real deal all along.
6 Ja Rule Organises The Worst Festival Of All Time
One of the worst festivals to ever take place was Fyre Festival which had been part organised by rapper Ja Rule. It quickly turned into a post-apocalyptic nightmare as many were left stranded without food, nowhere to sleep or access to their luggage. The original plan was to turn an island in the Bahamas into a musical paradise and they charged young adults upwards of $200 a ticket for the experience.
Then when everyone arrived, the island's airport staff was overwhelmed by the volume of people and could not keep up with the crowds. There was also the bad weather to battle with which had destroyed most of the sleeping areas. The food on offer, which was supposed to be luxury catering, was just a slice of cheese and a small salad.
Ja Rule tweeted that the event was not a scam and that he was "taking responsibility. I'm deeply sorry to everyone inconvenienced by this." They finally managed to get everyone home safely and as compensation they have been offered tickets for next year's festival - any takers?

Rob Kardashian killed off any hopes of reviving his career in reality television when he posted revenge photos of Blac Chyna online. Chyna's legal team are now "exploring all legal remedies" and if the mother of his daughter, Dream Kardashian, wants to take things further, he will have to serve jail time. Chyna's lawyer said, "Revenge (videos and photos) is illegal in California and it certainly appears to me that Rob has violated this criminal law."
Chyna also wrote in a Snapchat post that Rob was abusive towards her. She said, "'Rob (you) did all this but (you) beat me up and try act it never happen. (You) put hand on me I swear on god. On my kids but I'm supposed to be quiet because you're a Kardashian." Chyna has already filed a lawsuit against Rob and his family members.
4 Bill O' Reilly Paid Out Millions In Settlements
American TV host and author Bill O'Reilly finally had to face up to harassment claims made against him. O'Reilly had previously paid $32 million to help put the rest harassment allegations which also included allegations that he sent explicit adult videos to colleagues. Despite all of this, he was handed a renewed contract from 21st Century Fox for a salary of $25 million a year as chairman.
Then when details of the harassment suit went public, O'Reilly was fired. O'Reilly then blamed God for the crash of his career, he revealed on Spin News, "You know, am I mad at God? Yeah, I'm mad at him. I wish I had more protection. I wish this stuff didn't happen. I can't explain it to you. Yeah, I'm mad at him."
3 Katy Perry's 'Purposeful Pop' Was A Total Flop
Katy Perry struggled through this year when her new brand of "purposeful pop" struggled to set the world on fire. Her fifth studio album Witness lacked the huge pop hits she had previously scored with California Girls, Firework, and Roar - instead the lackluster tracks failed to win over fans or critics. The Guardian said "Perry's heartfelt ballads feel tacked on in the face of all this weirdness" and All Music called it a "shade desperate."
So why was 2017 the year everyone turned against Katy Perry? She spent most of her album's promotional tour on a pity party where she spoke mostly about struggles with fame and the ongoing Taylor Swift feud. She then went on a weekend long live stream which included her ranking her ex-boyfriends from best to worst. Alongside some embarrassing on-stage dancing, it was clear the Katy Perry Is Over party was in full swing.
2 Nick Cannon Fired From America's Got Talent
Comedian Nick Cannon was taking home a healthy salary of $4.5 million per season of America's Got Talent before he was fired for dropping "N" bombs during a comedy special on Showtime. During his routine he claimed that the talent show had stolen his "N-card" from him.
Later Cannon wrote on Facebook, "I was being threatened with termination by (NBC) Executives because of a comedy special that was only intended to bring communities closer together, I was to be punished for a joke."
He then added fuel to the fire as he tweeted during the drama, "John Lennon said it best! Soon as you stand up for yourself, they brush you off as crazy!" and "They Shootin at me, but they didn't know the Cannon was bulletproof!" The executives made the decision to fire him and now Cannon is on the lookout for other work.
1 50 Cent Couldn't Control His Rage Over A Fan
50 Cent needs to have a word with his security team about how they can handle his crowds better. During a gig earlier this year, he was performing for a crowd at Lox Baltimore Soundstage a fan grabbed his arm, which caused him to fall forward from the stage. Clearly angered by this, the In Da Club rapper started getting physical with the woman and shoved her very hard in the chest.
The whole incident was caught on camera and many called him out on how rough he was with a fan who had paid to see him and had just become too excitable. This isn't the first time he had assaulted a fan, in 2004 after a water bottle was thrown at him on the stage, he ran head first into the crowd and a fight broke out. Fans have since turned against the rapper as it's not worth of the risk of being attacked if you attend his concerts.
