10 New Year Resolutions for the Brokenhearted
Nursing a broken heart on New Year's day isn't the best situation. So try to move forward with these resolutions to have a better love life in 2015. By Danielle Anne Suleik
Getting your heart broken is an inevitable process, when you choose to lay it out for someone to see. It is not something that someone should aspire to, but it is necessary in order to discover the true purpose of loving someone and being loved in return.
A broken heart comes in many forms. It happens to everyone - not just to people who are in love. A child can get their heart broken when their parents leave. Two friends can get their hearts broken when their bonds are cut. Nevertheless, as people, we push on.
We continue to find ways to love other people in order to fill our lives with meaning that is not relegated to simply moving and breathing.
New Year's resolutions for the brokenhearted
Love is something that we all deserve no matter who we are. This year, your broken heart will be given enough time to heal.
In order for you to do that, you need to start looking forward to the future. You can do this by following a list of New Year's resolutions for your broken heart.
#1 I will learn from my mistakes. Your heart was broken because you and your partner made numerous mistakes that could not be fixed while you were together. You needed to leave each other in order to start healing. But that is not the only thing that you should do. You need to assess those mistakes and find out how you can prevent them from happening again.
#2 I will wait for someone worthy. A New Year means new possibilities for everyone. This also means that you could meet the person of your dreams at any time. Still, you need to be sure of that person so you won't have to go through the same things you did the year before. You do not need to rush out and find someone new. Just be happy with your situation and wait until that certain someone finds their way to you.
#3 I will get to know a person better. Once you find that special someone, do not forget to learn as much as you can about them. Your feelings are just as important, but knowing what type of person they are can help you determine whether they are worthy of your attention.
First impressions give away some clues as to what a person's intentions are, but sometimes it is not enough. Give yourself time to know more about a person. It can help protect your heart from further heartbreak, and can even help you form a deeper connection with that person.
#4 I will learn to give. When you engage in a new relationship, you have to be as generous as you can. Not just through material things, but with your compassion and attention as well. Don't allow yourself to be complacent and just accept the love and devotion a person gives you. Be kind as well and return the favor by being there for them whenever they need you.
#5 I will expect to take. Knowing how to give a person your heart is just half of the equation. You need to value yourself and ask for the things that you need in a relationship. When you start seeing someone, you do not automatically know what it takes to keep the relationship intact. On the other hand, you do know what makes you happy. If your partner can provide it, ask for it and accept it wholeheartedly.
#6 I will always empathize. One of the reasons why hearts get broken is that two people who are in a relationship forget to make way for one another. If a fight takes too long and never gets resolved, a break-up becomes inevitable. That is where compromise and empathy comes in.
You need to put yourself in your partner's shoes so you can allow yourself to give in when necessary. Sometimes, a fight is just a fight and it can be resolved easily. When it can't, you and your partner can come to a resolution that can benefit both of you. That is what compromise is all about.
#7 I will watch for signs. When things are not going well with a new partner, do not delude yourself into thinking that everything is okay. You know the difference between right and wrong, so it won't be a problem for you to see if a person is not worthy of your love. If the problem lies somewhere else, knowing the signs can also help you solve any problem that comes your way before it worsens.
#8 I will not rush into things. Commitment is a serious aspect of a relationship. When faced with a new prospect for love, you do not need to lock it in by asking for a commitment. Take it slow and check if you and your partner see eye to eye. By taking the time to find out about their intentions, you can save yourself the trouble of staying in a relationship that does not have a happy ending.
#9 I will trust my gut. You can be as smart as you can be, but nothing can compare to what your instinct can do for you. When it does not feel good, it probably isn't good for you. There is a difference between doubting yourself and doubting the person that you are with. When you don't trust what is happening within your relationship, you need to take a step back and find out why it is not working.
#10 I will accept whatever happens. If these resolutions fail to work for you, it does not mean that you should give up. It just means that you have a few more things to learn. Not everyone can end up with the person they are meant to be with in an instant. You have to work on yourself and your feelings towards other people first.
A person can be loved, but that is as much as someone else can do for them. You need to learn what it takes to love someone, even if it means getting your heart broken over and over. The good thing is that you always have another year to work on yourself and learn from the mistakes that you made in that past.
There are no defined rules for preventing heartbreak. Anything can happen to cause a relationship to fail. You cannot stop it, but you can try. When you do find the person that you are meant to be with, the chances of getting your heart broken can slim down to almost nothing.
That is the purpose of these resolutions. They were made to guide you so you can avoid getting your heart broken. And though your heart can still get broken, you can at least rest assured knowing that you did everything you can to keep it from happening. Aside from that, these resolutions can also help you find someone new to love and keep in the process.
