9 Unique Parenting Styles Snooki Follows And 9 From JWoww
BFFs Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi and Jenni “JWoww” Farley often come under fire for their parenting. Sometimes a little too much, like when people on social media attack the stars for what they think is bad parenting. But how bad is it? Sure, there have been some strange pieces of parenting advice the stars have spread out to the world. In Snooki's case, this advice was often related to her appearance, making her seem like a high-maintenance mom. For example, the Huffington Post reported that one of Snooki's pearls of wisdom for moms is to bring their own gowns to the hospital for their labor because the hospital gowns are ugly.
But, Snooki and JWoww have come a really long way since becoming moms. They follow some really positive parenting styles that new moms should adopt, such as how important it is to boost your child's body positivity. Of course, sometimes the things they say might seem a little strange, but their hearts are in the right place and there are often really valuable lessons in their parenting styles if you take a second glance. Here are some parenting gems we can take from Snooki, with some pieces of gold advice from JWoww.
18 Snooki: She Ignores Her Kids' Tantrums
Wait, what? At first glance this can sound like a bad thing to do. Surely rushing to console your kids is best? Recently, Snooki was bombarded online by her anti-tantrum parenting stance. She posted a picture on Instagram that showed her posing for a photo while her son was throwing a tantrum on the floor behind her.
She even commented on it, showing her followers she was aware of his antics by writing, “Don't mind my tantrum kid in the back,”
… as reported on Parents.com. Some of her followers became angry, saying that Snooki should pay more attention to her children. She replied, saying that her followers weren't in her house seeing what kind of mother she really was and they should stop saying negative things about her.
While ignoring tantrums might seem like a negative parenting trait, it can actually be a good thing - for parents and their kids alike. As stated on the Parents.com website, you should ignore your child unless he or she is physically putting himself in danger. “By taking away your attention completely, you won't reinforce his undesirable behavior,” the site reads. And, of course, you give yourself a chance to keep your calm.
17 JWoww: She Falls Asleep Before Her Kids
A parenting assumption is that you take your kids to bed and put them to sleep before you go get your beauty sleep. But for Jenni “JWoww” Farley, she does things the other way around. She likes to fall asleep before her kids do. Although that sounds strange, give her some slack - being a mom is hard work! As she told Hollywood Life, having two kids (Meilani, aged three, and Greyson, aged two) isn't easy.
“They're up at five in the morning every day. By the time I go to bed, I'm out cold.” Can't really blame her for passing out, but going to sleep before her kids is actually parenting advice JWoww doles out. In an article by The Richest, JWoww explained it's a good way for parents who need help at bedtime. “Here's a tip for getting your children to bed. Do what I do. I fall asleep before them. So, I have two children, I co-sleep and sometimes, it gets too much. I'll lock the door, make sure everyone's safe and let them have at it. I'll wake up in the morning, one's sleeping on the floor, one's sleeping at the end of the bed. It works."
16 Snooki: She Teaches Her Kids About Body Positivity
Body positivity is important to Snooki and this is one of the things she wants to pass down to her children, Giovanna (aged 3) and Lorenzo (aged 5). Recently, when her children asked her about the lines she had on her body, which were actually stretch marks, Snooki took the opportunity to teach them about body positivity instead of shying away from the issue or making things awkward. She posted an image of herself talking to her kids about her body on Instagram, writing these words in the caption, “I had to explain to them that it's my tiger stripes I gained when I became their mommy.” Calling her stretchmarks “tiger stripes” put a positive spin on something that many women are self-conscious about.
By doing this, she also prevents insecurities from being passed down to her kids, which is something every mother should try to avoid.
It's actually scarily common. As reported by Common Sense Media, children between the ages of five and eight who thought their mothers were unhappy with their own bodies were more likely to feel bad about their own. Eek. Kudos to Snooki for how she handled the situation with her children.
15 JWoww: She Makes DIY Sunscreen For Her Kids
JWoww recently received criticism on Instagram for posting a picture of her newborn son and husband in a swimming pool. Apparently, her followers were mad because they claimed she hadn't put sunscreen on her baby and it was not safe for a baby to be in the pool. How did they even know her kid wasn't wearing sunscreen? JWoww took the time and effort to explain to her followers that her son was in a salt water pool up to his belly for a total of three minutes. She also fought back about the claims that she hadn't put sunscreen on her baby.
She actually whipped up her own DIY sunscreen for her son and shared how she made it with her followers: Coconut Oil, Zinc Oxide, and Carrot Seed Oil. As reported by People, JWoww claimed that as she works in the tanning industry, she knows all about sun protection. Nice one, Jenni! FYI: Carrot seed oil is really good for baby skin. According to the Mommy Care website, it is a natural skin care ingredient with many great uses. It prevents skin irritations while providing protection against elements other than the sun. These include pollution and cigarette smoke.
14 Snooki: She Lets Her Kids Sleep In Her Bed
When children want to sleep in their parents' beds, often they're told to go back to their own rooms. But Snooki doesn't have time for that - especially because it can actually help her to get some sleep. After the birth of her daughter, the Mirror reported a tweet Snooki sent to her followers in which she said she was getting no sleep. It read, “Absolutely love being a mother to two kids! Haven't gotten wink of sleep taking care of & staring at my daughter.” Having kids in your bed can decrease trips to and from the baby nursery and help everyone to score more snooze.
Although experts claim that letting kids sleep in your bed can be a negative thing because they should learn to care for themselves, as reported in an article by Huffington Post, this parenting style is all about what works for your household. Snooki told Parents.com she…
“co-sleeps” with her kids and sticks to doing what feels right to her as a mom.
She added, “People are so sensitive nowadays, get over it. As long as you love [your kids]-if you do different things than I do, good for you. As long as your kid is safe, loved, and healthy you're doing a good job.” That's so true!
13 JWoww: It's Good To Bust The Stereotypes
Giving her critics more ammunition to target her, JWoww believes in changing the way moms are defined. This is an important parenting style because it actually makes for a happier mom. For example, there are many stereotypes regarding how moms should or shouldn't behave, and what makes for a "good" versus a "bad" mom. By forgetting about these rules and choosing the best type of parenting that suits them, moms can free themselves up to being great moms.
Interestingly, JWoww actually thanks the movie Bad Moms for breaking the mom rules and stereotypes. As she said in an interview with People magazine, “I really think Bad Moms, as funny of a comedy it was, really paves the way for people like Nicole [Snooki] and I to say it's okay to have fun as a mom.” She goes on to speak about the stigma that many mothers face when juggling being a mom with being a woman. “I feel like there is a huge stigma: the moment you have kids, you are not allowed to drink, you are not allowed to put makeup on, how dare you take time to work out. There is just this stereotype that Nicole and I love to shut down and prove that you can be a phenomenal mother, but at the same time you can find time for yourself and it's okay.” Well said.
12 Snooki: She Did Her Makeup Before Going Into Labor
Although this isn't exactly a parenting style, it deserves a spot on this list because it's about taking care of yourself as a mom, which is a cause close to Snooki's heart. According to Total Beauty, Snooki gave Kate Middleton advice when she was preparing to give birth. Snooki told her she'd manage to deal with the lack of sleep but she had to “just do your makeup, put a tiara on, and you'll look beautiful as usual.” After the birth of her own son, Snooki took her own advice one step further (as she usually does like to go OTT).
She was reported as having prepared for the labor by doing her makeup.
However, what's interesting about this is that she actually applied makeup during the labor.
As reported by Wet Paint, Snooki said, “Before I was pushing, I put on bronzer and false eyelashes. I wanted to look pretty for him!” Her heart was in the right place. But let's not forget that, true to the craziness of reality shows, the birth of her son was filmed, which is probably another reason why Snooki wanted to have a full face on. Even now that her kids are a bit older, you can always spot Snooki looking well-put together.
11 JWoww: She Actually Lets Loose To Deal With Mom Guilt
In the same People interview, JWoww was asked how she deals with mom guilt and she said that drinking helps. It was just a joke, but the star's been quite vocal about dealing with mom guilt and how it's a real battle for her.
Mom guilt is basically when mothers feel guilty about being away from their kids. This is especially common with moms who work outside of the home but it can happen even when moms take some time for themselves.
It can be pretty tricky, making moms feel guilty even when they choose to focus on themselves for a few hours.
Mom guilt proves that assumptions and stereotypes surrounding motherhood really do need to change, such as that moms need to be with their kids 24/7.
When JWoww leaves her husband in charge of the kids, she gives him details of what he needs to do, then she can hit the Miami clubs. That's how it worked when JWoww and Snooki were filming the Family Vacation TV series, according to Refinery29. Interestingly, what happened during that trip is that Snooki heard her son's voice and started crying, which left JWoww in tears too. So much for avoiding mom guilt! Still, it's good that Jwoww tries to deal with it so that it doesn't stop her from having some downtime.
10 Snooki: She Takes Her Kids Outdoors
Kids spend way too much time in front of computer games and TV these days. According to research mentioned on the New York Post, too much time indoors has negative impacts on our health. In fact, such studies have found that time outside can decrease stress for both adults and children, which is why it's so important to step outside into nature on a regular basis. Snooki would probably agree with those research findings because she's a firm believer in getting her kids out of the house and into the great outdoors! As reported by The Richest, Snooki often tries to bond with her children by doing family activities outside with them.
In fact, she and her husband are regularly snapped taking their children for walks or doing fun activities.
The Richest goes on to explain that Snooki admits that her son prefers to kick a ball around with his dad, so they have their “boys time” together, but she's always there when they want to get some kiss and cuddle time from her. Clearly, her kids receive a good blend of fun time and loads of affection, which is a great combination - it's also the perfect Instagram photo opp!
9 JWoww: She Raises Her Daughter On An Organic Diet
Organic diets have been on the rise on a global scale, and interestingly JWoww has jumped on the bandwagon when it comes to her daughter. In the Buzzfeed survey, when she was asked if she avoids GMOs (genetically-modified foods), JWoww explained that her daughter's on a strictly organic diet. “We never grew up with that stuff, so our kids are like the test subject for genetically made food. Meilani is strictly organic all the way. I want to give her a better life than I had because I was like, the mac and cheese kid. And soda. Apparently, I drank [11 sodas] a day at one point as a kid.” Starting kids on an organic diet when they're still very young is a good way to encourage those habits and ensure that they will continue leading a healthy lifestyle when they become adults. So, while an organic diet might seem a bit extreme for a young child, it can help to keep a baby happy and healthy, especially since GMOs are linked to a variety of illnesses. In fact, the Natural Society claims that GMOs are linked to a whopping 22 diseases! You definitely don't want that anywhere near babies.
8 Snooki: She Puts Her Children's Needs Ahead Of Her Own
Some of the common rules experts insist parents should set for their children is having a bedtime routine that doesn't budge. This often includes letting children go to the bathroom one last time before bed to prevent bedwetting, as explained on Very Well Family. It's important so that children who stick to a night routine avoid needing to use the bathroom during their sleep, but Snooki is a mom who doesn't follow the rules of bedtime.
In fact, she doesn't really follow a bedtime routine with her kids at all. This is mainly because she doesn't want to stand in the way of what her children need, especially when it concerns the subject of her children drinking too close to bedtime. As Snooki told Parents.com,…
“If my kid's thirsty, I'm going to give them a drink.”
This is a rule she follows even if it's late at night and her children need to get to bed. Good for her! Although this parenting style could result in bedtime oopsies, Snooki doesn't mind! The point to take from this is that she prefers putting her children's need ahead of her own and isn't afraid to talk about creating her own parenting rules, which is refreshing.
7 JWoww: Patience Is A Must
JWoww has come a long way since becoming a mother. As reported by E! Online, she confessed, “I was someone that didn't have patience and I was very, almost OCD. You have to have patience [as a mom] and come to the fact that you will never be on time for anything ever again. Your kids will always come first.” Although she always talks about having time away from the kids, she added, “I'd rather spend my Friday and Saturday nights with my children, watching Rapunzel or Tangled.”
Whether it's the need to have an immaculate home or be punctual, JWoww highlights the importance for moms to lose the need to be perfect and choose patience instead. Psychology Today explains that perfectionism in motherhood can have many negative consequences if moms try too hard to make sure they're perfect. These include competing with other moms, having negative romantic relationships, and entertaining negative self-talk. An example is thoughts pertaining to fears that they're a bad mom if they don't do certain things and choose to parent in their own unique ways. By losing the pressure to be perfect, mothers can find ways to enjoy the experience of motherhood while looking after themselves.
6 Snooki: She Enjoys Changing Diapers
While Snooki is pretty open about things she likes and dislikes about being a mom, sometimes she throws a curveball by liking something that many other parents wish they could avoid. We're talking about changing a baby's smelly diapers! This news was discovered thanks to a Reddit rumor that claimed the reality TV star didn't want to change her babies' diapers because she claimed: “that's what maids are for.” However, this was promptly busted as being totally false. Snooki fought back against the fake news, claiming that she loved changing diapers. As reported by Belly Itch Blog, when she was pregnant Snooki tweeted to her followers that she didn't believe in having maids and couldn't wait to change her baby's diapers. And, it wasn't just to keep the critics at bay - it was how she honestly felt and this was revealed after she gave birth to her son and had a lot of diapers to change on a daily basis. Perez Hilton reported that Snooki was loving nursing Lorenzo and when it came to changing diapers, she raved,…
“I'm legit an old lady. Rockin the diapers with that old lady gangsta lean.”
It's clear that she's a hands-on mum who believes in embracing all parts of motherhood.
5 JWoww: She Refuses To Stress Herself Out
There is no doubt that being a mom can be really stressful and it's the toughest job in the world. JWoww was no stranger to all the anxiety and fear surrounding motherhood. But she learned to chill the hard way. “I was so paranoid [about] SIDS that I probably lost the first six months because I wasn't sleeping,” she told Parents.com. Wow, that's stressful to have to worry about! But now, her advice to new moms is not to overstress. While she claims that parenthood is really hard, she says it's harder to imagine what her life was like before she had kids. “It just felt so natural and so right,” she told Parents.com. “I would never want the life I had before. I enjoyed it, but being a parent is so rewarding every single day.”
It's super important for moms to try to relax and enjoy all the moments of their children's lives because they grow up so fast. By stressing too much, moms can make themselves anxious and depressed, while missing out on the beauty that motherhood has to offer on a daily basis, so JWoww's advice to relax is really on point!
4 Snooki: She Practiced Being A Mom By Using A Doll
Confession time: there were many people who didn't think Snooki would be a good mom. Even she herself had some things to say on the subject. When she was on reality TV show Jersey Shore, Snooki announced that the fact that she could reproduce was scary. When she became pregnant, she actually labeled the experience as not being pleasant, according to the Daily Mail. However, she went on to say that motherhood is the awesome reward of pregnancy. To prepare for motherhood, Snooki had an unconventional style: when she was pregnant, she would carry a doll around. As mentioned on People,…
There was a time when Snooki was snapped holding her doll which was draped in a cheetah-print blanket and pushing around a stroller while wearing high heels.
JWoww joined her in this strategy, and the two of them could sometimes be seen walking around town carrying dolls. While it might seem a bit weird, it's a good tip to become more comfortable with different aspects of motherhood, such as pushing babies in a stroller or learning how to carry them. All the practice Snooki could get before the arrival of her kids definitely contributed to her becoming a great mom.
3 JWoww: She Stays Flexible
Having children changes your whole lifestyle, and you have to learn to accommodate your children if you want to be a successful and happy parent. In a YouTube interview with Snooki called “Would You Rather?” which was conducted for their show Moms With Attitude, it was clear that JWoww is quite a flexible mom. When asked if she would rather choose between taking a short flight with her kids or a long road trip to reach their destination, she interestingly chose a long road trip. Although this might sound surprising to other moms considering long road trips with kids can be difficult, JWoww confessed that her children are not good on flights so she'd rather take the long journey.
She also talked about how her children have started to wake up really early in the mornings, with Greyson up around four and Meilani up around six. Despite how stressful this can be, JWoww prefers to go with the flow and have this really early start to the day instead of trying to get her children to stick to a different routine. When doing this, she might get some more sleep a few hours later when her kids start to doze. This “sleep when your baby sleeps” is common parenting advice but it does have some problems. For example, while other people are getting up, JWoww could end up going back to sleep, which can totally mess with her regular schedule. But, since she's flexible, she doesn't seem to mind about that. It's all about what's good for the kids.
2 Snooki: She Prioritizes Having A Social Life
One of the assumptions made about parents, especially mothers, is that that they should stop having a life outside of the home when they have kids. This is an interesting debate for Snooki who's always been known as a nightlife lover. Interestingly, she's claimed that going out as a mom has actually made her a better mother. As reported by Daily Mail, Snooki has explained, “I'm a 24/7 parent at home. I'm always with my kids… so the fact that I can get a break and go to the gym for a minute or go out to dinner with my girlfriends for a little bit, it makes me a better mother because I'm not so irritable.” It totally makes sense, however, lots of people give her heat for liking to spend time with her friends and party. To deal with the criticism, Snooki told Broadly, “As a mom, you see other moms putting down each other for their parenting choices, and that's one thing that I hate…
"We should be able to choose what we want to do for our kids and shouldn't judge others for what they do. "
"We're just trying to make the best of the situation and we're all different. And with women, in general, I think we're catty and we need to relax. If we band together, we can take over the world." Well said!
1 JWoww: She Has Fun
Much like party-girl Snooki, JWoww doesn't let the critics stop her from having a good time every now and then. She believes that her children should actually be proud of her for having fun. As she explained to People mag, she's giving her children a great life and being cool while doing it! Most importantly, her partying lifestyle doesn't hurt anyone, and that's really the point worth taking from her words.
JWoww has also explained that she can turn her partying button on and off when she wants to - it's not something that's out of her control. She reckons it's unhealthy for her to think too much about her kids when she's out of the house and insists it's important for her to let loose once in a while because it's healthy. “[If] keep thinking about the kids, then I'm going to get upset and I'm going to ruin everyone's time,” she says. “So there is a time where I flip the switch: [The kids are] good, they're having fun, they're with their dad. Everything's fine.” Sounds pretty reasonable and it's clear that she's thought through her decision to find a balance that's healthy for her and her family.
