16 Celebs Who Played Roles We Loved, But Are Nuts In Real Life
Here's a question we'd like to pose to you: "Are artists crazy?" Professional actors (who are too artists) work forever hard on their craft, disregarding convention and mundanity. Due to that, would you say they are unbalanced by holding differing values from mainstream society while preserving hope and projecting confidence in their abilities despite vast skepticism and discernment? Or, is it wholly the opposite?
Perhaps actors, are astonishingly strong individuals trying to weather a storm that defines their life almost as much as the longing for creativity. Than again, maybe some actors are plainly just coo coo in the head! They say an actor is only as good as their backstory. At least, that's the logic behind the “eccentricity effect,” a phenomenon coined by researchers. Thereby, the crazier the actors' past, the crazier they'll be (in real life) ultimately resulting in them producing stronger, more heartfelt performances on stage and on screen.
The following celebs have been said to have some major mental issues - hence as to why they are the crème de la crème of the acting world. Brace yourselves… for here are 16 celebs who played roles we loved, but are coo coo in real life.
16 Selena Gomez Is Said To Be Un Poco Loca
Sí, we had to break out the español on this one! Selena Gomez played the sassy Alexandra Margarita "Alex" Russo, a protagonist of the Disney Channel original series Wizards of Waverly Place. On the show, Gomez (Alex) is outgoing, sly, and sometimes rude-however in real life, Gomez is utterly two beef patties short of a Big Mac!
According to an insider, when Gomez first got together with (now boyfriend) The Weeknd she was acting "crazy" and "pushing him away" due to her insecurities. “The Weeknd is starting to feel suffocated by Selena,” an insider revealed. “Selena's acting so crazy that he's starting to have second thoughts about their relationship,” the insider continued, “Friends are concerned that it's only a matter of time before it all ends in tears due to Selena's self-sabotaging ways.” Yowsers. Think that's what happened with her and Bieber too? Hmmm…
15 Emma Watson Is Coo Coo For Cocoa Puffs
Emma Watson played the haunting Hermione Jean Granger, a character in J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. Watson (Granger) first appears in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, as a new student on her way to Hogwarts. As you figure, in reality, Watson's personality is much different than Hermione Jean's. However the question is, how much so? Very, VERY much so!
Early this year, it was reported that it was in fact 'crazy demands' that caused La La Land producers to drop Emma Watson for Emma Stone. "She began making all these crazy demands, like rehearsals for the film must be done in London,' said the producers. "Watson was offered the lead female role, but she (initially) wouldn't commit. Now, she's raising hell even though it was the actor's fault for being too demanding," they continued. Sheesh, looks like Emma Watson is a beauty and a beast!
14 Think Steve Wilkos Looks Intimidating? He's A Girl Scout Compared To Ellen DeGeneres!
"No Willie… not Ellen!" Yes, yes Ellen. DeGeneres played the cherubic Dory in the feature animation film Finding Dory. However word on the curb, is that Ellen DeGeneres is called Diva DeGeneres around town and is more 'like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' instead. “She's just not nice to people who work for her,” a show insider reported, “She's like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.” Regrettably for DeGeneres' wife, Portia de Rossi, the oddball behavior continues once the talk show host leaves the studio.
“There are many instances when Portia will literally leave Ellen at the valet and go back into a restaurant and apologize to the waitstaff,” a source close to the couple revealed. “Portia sees Ellen changing, and it's not for the best,” added the source. Big wowsers.
13 Angelina Jolie Is A Tad Kevin Spacey
We love Angelina Jolie, and about every character she's played-from Evelyn Salt, Sara Wayland and Lara Croft to Grendel's mother-Jolie rules! Nonetheless, the hearsay around Hollywoodland is that Jolie is battier than Bruce Wayne's cave! The actress' kinship for blood was terribly troubling, particularly when she wrote Jonny Lee Miller's name across a white t-shirt in her own blood at their wedding and the time she and (second husband) Billy Bob Thornton infamously sported necklaces attached to vials of each other's blood in public.
Yeah, and of course there was that time she greeted her brother with a 5 second French kiss. Oh, and when she tried to drag Jennifer Aniston into her messy divorce; according to sources, Jolie wanted her legal team to issue Aniston a subpoena and have her admit that Brad Pitt had/has a substance dependency in court. Woah Angie!
12 If Lindsay Lohan Wasn't On This List, It'd Be An Insult To Her
For the record, we love Lindsay Lohan! We may bash her sometimes on our site (okay, a lot on our site), but that still doesn't take away from the fact that we heart Hallie Parker / Annie James and Cady Heron (characters of Lohan's). A bit coincidental that LiLo starred in a movie called Mean Girls, because from what we've heard she's a lean, mean crazy machine!
The embattled starlet has been fighting an uphill battle with substance abuse since 2007, but her strange behavior isn't effortlessly blamed on just the drugs. Lohan's a sheer nightmare behind the wheel, she allegedly slugged a woman in a NYC nightclub before, and then there's that one time that she supposedly “chased and threatened” her then personal-assistant's mother around a Santa Monica parking lot! As a past NYT profile suggests, this is not a woman you want on your set if you can help it.
11 Wesley Snipes Tried To Plead Insanity In His IRS Case… Didn't Work!
We already know Wesley Snipes and taxes do not mesh, however, there's a bit more to his rebelliousness… he's a bit out there! For instance, during the filming of Blade, Snipes frequently battled with director David Goyer, refused to come out of his pot-den trailer for anything other than close-ups, and when he did decide to act, the result was so flat and emotionless that (Ryan) Reynolds was given free reign to go ham on the improv. In the name of delivering this great performance, Wes remained firmly in character on set, going so far as to introduce himself as Blade on Patton's first day.
Snipes' buffoonery peaked when he attempted to strangle Goyer during one of his uncommon set appearances, which led the distraught director to enlist a couple of local Vancouver bikers to be his “bodyguards”! The affray was enough to push Wesley to cut first-hand interaction with Goyer off entirely, opting for post-its as a means of communication for the rest of the shoot. Each of which was, of course, signed “Blade.”
10 Jennifer Lopez Is Really From The Block, And Can Prove It To You
Jennifer Lopez has played various characters we love, in films like Selena, The Wedding Planner and Maid in Manhattan. When cameras stop rolling and the lights cut off though, JLo transmutes into a flaming-tempered boricua from the BX. According to reports, Jennifer Lopez once drove a staff member at an Army base to tears during one of her USO tours!
Aside that unhinged moment, it's too fairly common knowledge that Lopez is a diva and can be difficult to work with. Like during the filming of Enough for instance, when we she snit-slapped her makeup artist's hand for putting on too much lip gloss. "Enough!" Lopez reportedly cried out, according to an eyewitness, when she felt 'too much gloss' had been applied to her lips! Or, how bout the time a maid who worked at the luxury hotel Melia Duesseldorf was fired after asking JLo for her autograph. "I took all my courage and rang the bell to get an autograph, but I was rejected by 2 assistants at the door,” said the maid. “A day later the cleaning company that employed me at the hotel called and said that Ms. Lopez had complained. I was fired right there on the phone! Because of an autograph!” Wrong, just wrong JLo.
9 Don't Let The Cuteness Fool You… Zooey Deschanel Is Gone Like The Wind!
When you think of Zooey Deschanel, the first thing you think is 'cute'. In Yes Man, The Driftless Area and whatever other film, Deschanel is just eat-you-up cute. Though they say, "looks can be deceiving" and that statement describes Deschanel better than anything. The actress - who stars on FOX's New Girl - is said to be a 'nasty boss' who treats her co-workers 'badly', according to a production insider.
"Zooey Deschanel has gone from new girl to mean girl on her sitcom set! Although the show has other bosses, (including creator Liz Meriwether and producer Katherine Pope), Zooey rules the roost,” the insider dished. “And she gets moody and starts making rules on the set which is upsetting a lot of the cast and crew members. The show's schedule really drives Zooey up a wall, because they're always running behind when the full cast is on set. So now, Zooey insists on days ending with scenes that just feature her and one other actor. When that can't happen due to the production schedule, however, she's unhappy and all hell breaks loose.”. Yikes Zooey, you've got us scared of you now!
8 Joaquin Phoenix Is Living Amongst Us, But Not With Us…
"Did Joaquin Phoenix just publicly lose his mind on late night television, or am I tripping?" That was the question on viewers minds in 2009 when Phoenix appeared on Late Show with David Letterman looking like one of the cavemen in the Geico commercials, with an announcement that he was retiring from acting to pursue a hip-hop career. Umm, come again… Joaquin, Phoenix, rapping? Yup, it's official-he's a total nutjob! (and the above gif certainly doesn't help his cause, lol)
Casey Affleck later revealed the rascality was all part of a 'mockumentary' they were filming called I'm Not Here. But we'd like to point out that while that February Late Show appearance was freakish, no one was shocked (by it) the next day. Why is that? Because, the actor already has a history of substance abuse and was/is prone to behavior that was classified as unconventional at best. They can tell us the late night show incident was a sham all they want, but if it ever came out at one point that a Joaquin Phoenix gangsta rap album was set be released in stores, we wouldn't drop our jaws.
7 Katherine Heigl Might Get You 'Knocked Up"Side The Head
Oh wow, we'd of never thought Katherine Heigl was off her rocker! The actress has touched our hearts with many of her movies, such as Knocked Up, Unforgettable and The Ugly Truth. Off screen, from what we've gathered, Heigl is a couple hand fulls. For starters, she's known for her diva antics on set."Wardrobe issues, not getting out of the trailer, questioning the script every single day,"an insider says who worked with her on the crime comedy One For The Money. It's so for real, even producers steer clear of Heigl. One top producer at a network says they wanted to cast her for a project, but they decided against it because of her bad reputation.
It doesn't end there. The actress bad-mouths her colleagues. Heigl openly said in 2008 she didn't want another Emmy nomination for her role in Grey's Anatomy because the writing on the show is so bad! On top of that, Katherine's momager, Nancy Heigl, is just as bad as her (daughter) and they both have potty mouths, sources disclosed."I have never experienced anything like Nancy Heigl,"a source said."It's about the mouth. 'F you. You are a f'ing liar'. Whatever you'd say, you were an idiot."
6 You Don't Want Ben Stiller To 'Meet The Parents' - They'll Disown You Afterwards!
C'mon now, how could Gaylord Focker be insane in the membrane?! Actor Ben Stiller has touched our hearts again and again with characters like White Goodman, Sam Sweet and Greg Focker. Leave it to others still, and they'll tell you that Stiller is a few banana chips short of a trail mix.
According to an industry source, the comedian and actor is terrible to work with. On the set of Tropic Thunder, an inside source said that Stiller was a d-bag to everyone-even firing someone because he thought they didn't put enough sugar in his coffee in between scenes! "He yells at everyone for every little mistake," said the source. To add more icing on the cake, according to a past Howard Stern interview Stiller also was always rude to family friend Joan Rivers and never made amends with her before she passed. Aww dude, that's just foul!
5 Lark Voorhies Couldn't Be Saved By A Professional Let Alone A Bell!
Lark Voorhies played Lisa Turtle, the purty object of Screech's affection on the popular teen sit-com Saved by the Bell. And after that show ended, the actress appeared on several other shows, including Days of Our Lives and on The Bold and the Beautiful. Then in 2012, Voorhies appeared in a Yahoo! News video that went viral because of her puzzling behavior. Her mother came to her defense, telling the press that Voorhies was not 'on anything' in the video - as some believed - but that she had in fact been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Voorhies denied the bipolar allegation repeatedly to a number of media outlets, including People, TMZ and Entertainment Tonight.
Alas, her accounts and behavior actually did more to support her mother's arguments than they did to help Voorhies look sane. During all of her interviews, Voorhies took bizarre, long pauses and rambled incoherently. Her explanation to ET about her issues was, “I have no stating reasons why anyone should worry about me. Clearly, I am a very strong, top-of-the-line, always riding to it personage.” Makes it seem like her moms is speaking facts only, does it not?
4 Tom Cruise Has Been Cruising On Fumes For Awhile
Tom Cruise has portrayed numerous characters we love, such as Jerry Maguire and LT Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. He may be a very successful actor, but there are many who have questioned Cruise's sanity over the years. In real life, Cruise often just comes across as over-the-top. For example, Cruise is infamous for jumping up and down on Oprah's couch in exhilaration over his then-relationship with Katie Holmes. The incident was memorable for being both very weird and very awkward at the same time.
In addition, Cruise's devotion to the mystical and somewhat creepy religion of Scientology has also made some people question the actor's saneness. It has been widely reported that Holmes left their marriage in part to keep their daughter, Suri, out of Scientology's grasps. Cruise ever acting or/and being in lucid mind, well, it appears that's mission impossible.
3 Juliette Lewis Is A Natural Born Wingnut
Juliette Lewis is one of the most notable actors from the 1990's-acting in blockbusters such as Cape Fear, From Dusk till Dawn and Natural Born Killers. On screen, Lewis typically portrayed the guiltless-face, naive teen that somehow always ended up in a chaotic and unpleasant or violent situation. In the real world though, the actress is said to be kinda loopy.
Juliette is yet another agent of Scientology, working her migrates as both a character actress and rock musician to execute some cult-like recruiting techniques that have turned some portions of Hollywood cold towards her. The rock side of Lewis' life (she leads the band Juliette and the Licks) is what really helped her earn the 'crazy' label, thanks to her frenzied presence on stage as well as interviews. Tell you what, with all of this hype surrounding Lewis' musical ventures, eh maybe we'll go to one of her concerts to see what all of the hype is about!
2 "Martin! You So Crazy… " Like, No, For Real
Martin Lawrence is known for his many comical feature films, including Bad Boys I and II, and Big Momma's House, and also for his classic sitcom Martin. In real life, however, things haven't always been so funny for the comedian. In 1995, the actor got violent while filming the movie A Thin Line Between Love and Hate and was hospitalized. Then in 1996, he was again hospitalized after he was found wandering on Ventura Boulevard in Los Angeles cursing at cars and with a loaded firearm in his pocket. A few months after that incident, he was stopped at Burbank Airport while trying to board a plane with a firearm!
However the worst occurrence, happened in 1999 when Lawrence collapsed after jogging in heavy clothing during 100-degree weather and ended up in a coma for 3 days. Many looker-ons believe that the actor is bipolar. However, Lawrence has denied having the mental illness and instead has blamed substance abuse for his many peculiar episodes.
1 Christopher Walken Is The Cat's Meow - Literally
C'mon who doesn't love Frank White (character Walken portrayed in King of New York)! Other Christoper Walken characters such as Captain Koons, Vincenzo Coccotti and Frank Abagnale, Sr. we downright adore too. Walken is always going to be perceived as an eerie guy because he's earned a reputation for playing unusual characters. He is, without a doubt, one of the best character actors of our time, but we say, you're kidding yourself if you think a guy that's made a career out of playing kooks isn't drawing inspiration from somewhere within.
So, what is Walken's gaga character trait? He's obsessed with… cats! The actor has been known to share with others his feline captivation, particularly the tail. He's even waxed poetic about the myriad expressions cats can impart simply through their tail, and how awesome and game-changing it would be if actors had one as well. In the infamous words of Ace Ventura, "Alrighty then… "
