11 Of Miley's Wildest Outfits And 10 Since She's Settled Down (Again)
“We can't stop, and we won't stop” talking about how amazing Miley Cyrus' transformation last year was, because who are we kidding, it was surprising, and it was incredible. Miley really showed up with the new music on her latest album Younger Now. From Malibu to Inspired to Younger Now, every song shows a new level of talent and commitment within the singer-songwriter.
Many of Miley's fans grew up right alongside her. We first connected with her as the quirky, little country girl on Disney Channel's Hannah Montana. We saw her try to break free from Hannah Montana with new musical endeavors, like Party in the USA, and major movie star roles. Many fans stood by her when she seemingly fell off the rocker and came out on a wrecking ball. But after her Bangerz album, things got a little hard to follow. She was seen partying more and living a wilder lifestyle. Some of her closest relationships, including one with her fiancé, actor Liam Hemsworth, started suffering. She was still putting out new music, but it wasn't something that reached the mainstream media anymore. Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz was something from another spectrum altogether.
Along with Miley's musical changes, her personal style also transformed dramatically.
Desperate to no longer be seen as Hannah Montana, Miley started coming out with over-the-top and questionable fashion choices. After presenting Malibu, a softer look to Miley also started to reappear. Let's look at 11 of Miley's wildest outfits and compare them to 10 since she's settled back down.
21 Wild Style: Somewhere Over The Rainbow
In 2015, Miley Cyrus was granted the privilege of hosting the MTV VMA Awards. This was a huge risk for MTV and their parent company Viacom because the shocking image of Miley dancing with a foam finger and Robin Thicke in 2013 was still very fresh in most minds. And it's not like Miley had calmed down since that incident; she actually increased the insane acts of social defiance. When the network announced Miley would be the host, tons of people were left scratching their heads.
During the night's three-hour live show, Miley changed her outfit over ten times. The VMAs have become notoriously known for its crazy antics and wild attendees, but Miley definitely went overboard. She drew inspiration from the LGBT flag for one of her outfits.
It may have been the least revealing outfit from the night, but it is one that probably meant the most to the singer.
The LGBT community holds a place close to Miley's heart. She founded her Happy Hippie Foundation to help vulnerable youth, including LGBTQ and homeless youth, find support services. This colorful outfit was created for Miley by fashion designer, Jeremy Scott, according to Huffington Post.
20 Mellow Miley: In Malibu
In May 2017, Miley Cyrus let the world see a different side to the wild child she seemed to be becoming. When Miley released Malibu, the first single off Younger Now, fans and haters all got to see a refreshed and new Miley. She has since revealed the chill and catchy song was written for her fiancé, Liam Hemsworth. The couple started dating in 2009, after starring in The Last Song together, but in 2013, Hemsworth ended the relationship. “Of course, it was hard, man,” Hemsworth explained to GQ Austrailia about the breakup, “But at the time we were going in different directions and it's just what needed to happen.”
Seeing Miley now, it looks like the break up really was the best thing for them at the time. Miley and Hemsworth reunited at the beginning of 2016 and have been happy ever since. The lyrics to Malibu say, “I never would've believed you if three years ago you told me I'd be here writing this song,” and really no one would have probably believed it. A lot of people credit Miley's change in lifestyle choices to Hemsworth, but a lot of it had to do with who Miley was growing into herself.
19 Wild Style: Happy Hippie
Another one of Miley's wild outfit choices from the 2015 VMAs featured a wide array of very bright colors. A lot of the commercial promos leading up to the VMAs were what could be described as, “a bad trip,” and “psychedelic.” It left viewers prepared for the show. She started the evening off on stage relatively safe with this lively jumpsuit. But things only became more revealing as the night progressed.
No one is really certain what MTV was thinking by putting Miley Cyrus up as the host for the night, but it made for one entertaining night.
Viewers tuned in for several awkward outfits and even more bad jokes.
They saw Nicki Minaj call Miley out in front of the live audience and Kanye announcing he'd be running for president in 2020. It was a night made for ups and downs, confusion and frustration. Miley's outfit choices, while radical, were probably carefully thought out and planned. If everything Miley did that night was to get people to pay attention to Miley and talk about her, which it probably was, it worked out perfectly. Much of the news after the awards show focused on what the heck was going on with the then 22-year-old singer.
18 Mellow Miley: True Love Wins
Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth resembled something straight out of a fairytale during Vanity Fair's 2018 Oscar party. Her black and ivory satin ensemble oozed class and the man on her arm was just an added bonus. Since the pair reunited in 2016, things have been going really well for Miley. A source for ET described the couple as “more committed to each other than ever and are at a place in their lives where a beautiful wedding could be in the cards.”
Miley and Hemsworth were previously engaged before her Bangerz days hit and Hemsworth ended things. His parents have been cautious on the topic of marriage ever since. They openly disapproved of Miley's wild partying and outlandish antics. However, as Miley moved into a new era of her music, her own life has reflected the changes, and the Hemsworth's have taken notice. “Miley had to get through a phase of discovering herself before she was able to commit,” expressed ET's source. “And now that she has turned her life around and stopped partying, she is clear minded and knows what she wants.” Rumor has it, plans for Miley and Hemsworth's wedding are a go. While many might expect something out-of-this-world from Miley, she is leaning more toward a quiet “ranch-style” wedding.
17 Wild Style: Big Baby
During Miley Cyrus' 2015 Milky Milky Milk tour for her Dead Petz album, people got to see a multitude of different wacky outfits. This lineup of outfit changes was even more ridiculous than the 2015 VMAs. But this costume… this one has got to be one of the strangest things Miley has ever worn.
The giant baby costume paired with a rhinestone bottle and pastel pink wig is just on a new level of weird.
The outfit more than likely went along with her performance for her song BB Talk from her Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz album.
The music video for that song is on that same level of weird. She prances around in a diaper outfit and behaves like an infant. There are even a couple of “dance” sequences where she is wearing a very similar giant baby costume. The meaning behind the song is troubling to figure out, but much of the music from her Dead Petz album is. She released the album as a special project that went straight to sound cloud. Everything about the album's tour may be considered odd, but what it managed to do was totally entertain the audience members and some bigtime music critics, like Rolling Stone.
16 Mellow Miley: Fairytale Princess
Miley Cyrus continued making her stunning comeback during the 2018 Grammy Awards. During the show, Miley joined the iconic Elton John on stage for a powerful and moving performance of his 1971 hit, Tiny Dancer. The pair collaborated beautifully for the emotional song, with Miley adding just the right amount of assistance. A single white rose rested perfectly on John's Yamaha piano to show solidarity with the Time's Up movement.
Miley's outfit for the performance was a far cry from her 2015 VMA ensemble. Miley's spectacular transformation that night definitely didn't go unnoticed. She was praised for bringing back “Old Hollywood vibes” with her ruby red Zac Posen gown and loose waves. Critics took to Twitter with backhanded compliments. They made a point to say 'congratulations, but remember, you still did that one thing.' YouTube conspiracy theorist Mark Dice posted, “Seems that rabies vaccine has really helped Miley Cyrus -- she looked like a normal person tonight at the #GRAMMYs.” The Malibu singer is used to handling haters, though. In an interview with Good Morning America, Miley stated, “My whole thing is, haters are gonna hate, but haters are also going to click on your YouTube video just to watch it, so I don't really care.”
15 Wild Style: 'Dooo It!'
While in the VMAs press room in 2015, Miley Cyrus sported a shiny, pink spandex dress with four giant blow-up letters spelling, “Do It.” On top of Miley's head was a pig snout headband. The whole outfit's purpose was to push publicity toward her new album, Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz,'s first single, Dooo It! The song is basically an anthem for people who live life without a single care in the world. The state of Miley's mind during the writing of this song is not known, but after reading the lyrics, one can definitely take a wild guess.
Her unexpected album was released over streaming for free. According to The New York Times…
Miley made the album with $50,000 and without any help from her record label.
Flaming Lips, and the band's lead singer, Wayne Coyne, collaborated with Miley a lot on the album. Her recording label, RCA Records, apparently had no hard feelings over the secret project and released a statement saying, “Miley Cyrus continues to be a groundbreaking artist. She has a strong point of view regarding her art and expressed her desire to share this body of work with her fans directly. RCA Records is pleased to support Miley's unique musical vision.”
14 Mellow Miley: Never Again
Miley Cyrus made a special appearance at the 2018 March for Our Lives gun control rally in Washington D.C. She was there, most importantly, to show support for the thousands of high school students protesting. Her laidback outfit is something 2013 Miley probably wouldn't have worn. Her simple gray sweatshirt was marked with the hashtag, #MSDStrong, for Florida's Stoneman Douglas High School. Miley stood up there in front of the crowd and belted out one of her more moving performances of her hit song, The Climb while holding a sign reading “Never Again.”
Though this song was made famous during her Hannah Montana days, she still leans on it during life's toughest moments. Prior to her performance, Miley went on Twitter to share just how meaningful the song's words are to her. “These lyrics mean more to me now than ever. I won't ever give up & neither will the millions that march with us today!” According to people who saw her performance first hand, there wasn't a dry eye there by the time she finished. After ending the song Miley spoke out saying, “You guys are so incredible and I just count myself lucky to be in the presence of all you wonderful people, fighting for what's right.”
13 Wild Style: 'We Can't Stop'
Miley Cyrus' reputation struggled after her performance with Robin Thicke during the 2013 VMAs. Miley took over the VMA stage with giant teddy bears and foam fingers for her performance of her hit song We Can't Stop from her Bangerz album. In a far cry from her Hannah Montana days, Miley wore a questionable fuzzy gray leotard with a teddy bear's face on it. There were so many things wrong with this performance.
It was basically one out of control party on stage that hundreds of A-List musicians and stars had to sit there and watch.
Toward the end of the already intense performance, Miley stripped off the teddy bear onesie to reveal a skin-toned leotard. She then began singing “Blurred Lines,” alongside Robin Thicke. Nearly every viewer was utterly confused. So much was going on; the lines were definitely blurred. While some obvious comments criticized Miley and her Rated R dance moves, there were others who stood up for her artistic choices. Billboard's Editorial Director, Bill Werde tweeted, “Guys, Miley Cyrus is an all-star hot mess for a hot mess pop moment. She doesn't care what u think & that's her brand. & she just delivered.”
12 Mellow Miley: No Freedom Without Love
In a moving tribute to those who tragically lost their lives during the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas, Miley joined comedian Adam Sandler on stage at The Tonight Show to cover Dido's “No Freedom.” The Tonight Show host opened up the night saying, “This morning, we woke up to the news of another senseless shooting; this time in Las Vegas. In the face of tragedies and acts of terror, we need to remember that good still exists in this world. We're here to entertain you tonight and that's what we're gonna do.”
Miley and Sandler might actually be the last musical collaboration you could ever imagine, but they worked together perfectly. Their vocals paired up beautifully and pushed the song to a whole new emotional level. Miley wore a plain black pantsuit for the performance, most likely to not take away from the moment. Singing alongside Sandler, viewers witnessed how powerful and touching Miley's vocals truly are. If anyone doubted Miley was really capable of calming down her musical choices, this performance should change their minds. At the end of the performance honoring the more than 50 left dead and 500 wounded, Miley quietly stated, “Peace to everybody.”
11 Wild Style: Woman On The Moon
Another unique outfit from Miley Cyrus' outrageous Milky Milky Milk tour for her Dead Petz album was the one she wore while performing “Space Bootz.” The giant moon is actually a fitting choice for this song and the lyrics are pretty deep. The song talks about losing a love and trying to figure out how to go on without them. One of the verses go, “Oh space dude in your space suite; Our love it takes us to the moon; But you leave me up there I'm so maroon.”
Tons of people criticize Miley over her Dead Petz album, but it wasn't something she needed to do for herself, as a musician. In an interview, according to The Atlantic, Miley stated, “They'd never seen someone at my level, especially a woman, have this much freedom… "
"I literally can do whatever I want. It's insane.”
And nearly everything from that album is insane, but it got attention from some great critics, like Rolling Stone. The magazine gave Miley a raving review for the album. “Pop's most fearlessly out-there star goes even further.” Though they refer her as, “the lunatic pop princess,” they ultimately had nothing too negative to say about the songs.
10 Mellow Miley: 'Younger Now'
Miley Cyrus' latest album, Younger Now, marks the moment Miley “reinvented herself.” Releasing the songs on the album was a huge move for the Malibu singer. When you put the Younger Now album next to her Dead Petz experiment, it's like two different people worked on the pieces. In an interview with Beats 1 Radio, Miley explained, “I'm so happy to be on this planet and be able to be in the position I'm in. These things [headlines, records, no. 1s] are so mindless and below my ultimate goal. [Which is] to make the world better, to make the world change, to make Happy Hippie and what we stand for a reality, which is for the world not to be the way it is now.”
With Younger Now, Miley was really trying to project how she thinks and feels at this point in her life. “Lyrics are very sacred to me, and also to my fans. I want them to understand that this record is really all the truth, from me.” The outfit Miley is wearing and her body language in this photo says so much about who she is becoming. She's confident and doesn't have to show too much to be absolutely stunning.
9 Wild Style: Smiley Miley
As you can probably guess, this hot outfit (pun intended) came from Miley Cyrus' Milky Milky Milk tour for her Dead Petz album. She seemed to have a unique outfit for every single song from the wild album. This giant sun went along with her song 1 Sun. This song talks heavily about how we are seriously ruining the earth. It's a very touching song for what we are experiencing with climate change and global warming.
Miley is a lot deeper than her revealing and glittery outfits let you believe.
The chorus of the song goes, “We only had one sun, one moon, one me; one you.”
Miley has been active in standing up for the environment and fighting global warming since her Disney Channel days. Back in 2009, she collaborated with several other Disney stars, including the Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato to sing about saving the environment and doing our part to help. Since then, she's continuously speaking out on the matter and even went as far as claiming there is a possible apocalypse coming. Here are some more lines from 1 Sun for you to think about, “Wake up, world. Can't you see the earth is crying? Wake up, world. Can't you see all the clouds are dying? And maybe one day there won't be rainbows. Grass won't be green, and the sky won't be blue.”
8 Mellow Miley: Just Like You
Miley Cyrus may be a huge pop star, but she is just like you and me. She just grew up in the spotlight, so all her awkward growing pains and strange life experiments were heavily watched. Here she is sitting in a pair of black and silver sequined leggings with a band t-shirt. She had to literally reinvent everything about herself to be taken seriously, but who you see now, is who she's always been. She probably just learned to reel in the freak.
Her newest album Younger Now may have come out just last year, but the ambitious singer is already looking forward to what comes next. In an interview with BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge, Miley stated, “I'm already working on the next one. I'm already two songs deep on the next one. I'm over this now. I want to figure out what I want to do next. Hopefully, I can take some time - chill with the dogs, the hand with the pigs a little bit more, take some time off. But just keep writing.” Miley is a hardworking songwriter and wants to express her feelings the best way she can and really connect with her fans. She's not in it for the awards, she's in it for the love.
7 Wild Style: 'Love Money Party'
This facial expression says it all. What in the world was going through Miley Cyrus' young mind when she went out on the MTV VMA stage wearing this very eccentric outfit. During the 2015 VMAs, that Miley hosted, she changed her outfit over ten times. This one came during her final performance; one that would prove very important to her, because, in the end, she announced the release of her new project Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz for free on SoundCloud.
In her last moment at her wild VMA hosting gig, she performed her Dead Petz song, Dooo It! for the crowd. This is probably one of the craziest songs off the album, so it was an interesting choice for the first single.
Miley spoke out about her album multiple times, explaining it was her time to be free and do whatever she wanted to do with her music.
She wasn't forced to listen to anyone and she could really experiment with different styles and lyrics. It's been nearly three years since she released the album, and it's still referred to as “incredibly organic” and “unappreciated.” It's true, a few of the songs on the album are totally raunchy and scandalous, but there are quite a few beautiful tunes.
6 Mellow Miley: Inspired
A lot changed for Miley Cyrus the last couple of years. She reunited with the love of her life and future-husband, actor Liam Hemsworth, she released a great new album and she quit a lot of the toxic things in her life. Miley stopped partying and turned her whole life around. Her new album is a testament to who she is growing up to become. Her whole family is very supportive of everything she's becoming. Her father, country singer Billy Ray Cyrus expressed to ET, “As a dad, I see Miley really just functioning on, like, a figure and a joy for life. I don't know how to break it down more than just the fact that I see a joy in her spirit and something coming from within that is just pure beauty if you will.”
While speaking with Billboard, in a candid interview, the Younger Now singer revealed that she was completely clean, and her life was on the right track. Certainly, the changes in her personal life influenced her musical transformation and vice versa. “Sometimes you have to clear out the junk. And then you realize what's most important. Whatever is going on, it's working for her,” expressed her father.
5 Wild Style: 'Do My Thang'
During Miley's wildest moments, that ultimately began in 2013, she lost not only her reputation as a musician, but she momentarily lost her fiancé, Australian movie star Liam Hemsworth. Miley reportedly didn't fret over the split too much, though. She saw it as a moment to work on herself and grow up. It may have taken three years, and both Miley and Hemsworth dated other people during the split, but they found their way back to each other. “I knew that when we weren't together for the first time,” she said in an interview with Sirius XM. “I didn't know if that was the end of it or know if we'd be back together again, but knew that wherever I was going, I was on the right path.”
When Liam made the big decision to break off their earlier engagement, he was dealing with negative comments from his own parents and the media about Miley's frantic behavior.
Since she's started to evolve into a classy woman, his parents have taken notice and now approve of his choice for a bride. Miley was certainly positive about the time she had to take off from her relationship with Hemsworth and describes the process as having to “refall for each other.”
4 Mellow Miley: 'The Climb'
Miley Cyrus chooses to call her recent life change a “transition.” This outfit is a huge transition from some of her wild styles, that's for sure. With the release of her latest album, Miley basically released her new self on the population. Harpers BAZAAR describes Younger Now as, “a collection of stripped-down, country-inflected, radio-friendly pop songs.” This was in comparison to the wacky Dead Petz album that was released for free and didn't have any song featured on the radio.
“I feel really kind of far away from that person,” Miley expressed to Harpers BAZAAR. “I just want people to see that this is who I am right now. I'm not saying I've never been myself… Who I was on the last record was really who I am. It's just myself has been a lot of different people because I change a lot.” Those words should ring true to anyone who has lived, really. Everyone goes through life changes, some little and some drastic. Who you are now, probably isn't who you were ten years ago; and who you will be ten years from now, will probably be different, too. Prior to the release of Malibu, Miley went on a “media blackout,” but once she was sure about her choices, she let loose.
3 Wild Style: Work Hard, Play Hard
In the midst of Miley's Bangerz/Dead Petz days, she attempted to hop on to the EDM fashion line, \”kandi\”. Teaming up with designer Jeremy Scott, Miley put together a colorful and 70's-esque line of accessories and clothes. Side note: Scott is the fashion designer who created most of Miley's 2015 VMA wardrobe.
Unfortunately for Miley and tons of her following, her collaboration never went forward with the fashion line, but it seems other designers started building off her ideas.
Most of Miley's talent is seen in her music and her acting, but with her fashion designing, you get to see another creative side to the multitalented woman. “I'm a maker,” Miley expressed to Elle. “I've always done art, and I've been really into sculptures lately. But I feel like accessories are sculptural, too. They're just molded so you can make them part of your everyday life.” Some people didn't see her art the same way she did, though. Her pieces were described as, “candy-colored gobs of smiley faces, glitter, and plastic wind-up toys, smashed to bits and re-glued in new shapes.” Scott has stuck with Miley through all her crazy ideas and even designed the leather jacket featured in her Younger Now music video and the album's cover.
2 Mellow Miley: Love Someone
Even though Miley is “growing up,” she shows she can still put some pizazz into her style choices. She doesn't have to show tons of skin to have fun with her outfits. This sparkly, black outfit is way prettier than anything she wore during her Bangerz days and it shows almost no skin. Sometimes, it takes covering yourself up for the rest of the world to recognize who you can be. For Miley, the important part right now is that she put herself out there and was honest in her music.
Aside from music, Miley recently put herself out there in politics. She was an avid Bernie Sanders supporter, and then supported Hillary Clinton after she won the Democratic vote. She was outspoken but rather than spread hate and anger, Miley took a different stance. “I like the way I think right now,” she confessed in an interview with Billboard. “But don't all candidate supporters like the way they think? So, I've also got to be open with the way I approach people with my opinions. That's the only way to make real change. And it's not because I want to sell records! I know now the ways that don't work.”
1 Wild Style: Self-Proclaimed Party Animal
During 2013, and her VMA performance, Miley went out as a “self-proclaimed party animal.” She literally had no cares to give about anything at this point of her life. For years, she was trying really hard to shed her Hannah Montana skin, and she finally went overboard in reaching the next level. People described this point in Miley's life as her being “all grown up.” However, we know now, this was nothing like what the grown-up Miley could be.
Two-thousand-thirteen Miley called her “We Can't Stop” days a revolution, not a reinvention.
In a private interview with MTV, Miley stated, “The biggest thing people say to me is 'I love that you don't care what people think.' And I don't; I can take all the constructive criticism in the world, and… of course I want people to love my music, but at the end of the day, I make music for me. I make music because I love it and I put good energy into it, so it will be all good.” Interestingly enough, this is some of the same stuff Miley is saying to this day. Her music is what matters to her. “People think of me as a party animal, which I am a self-proclaimed party animal," she admitted. "But I also am the hardest-working person you'll ever know."
