We Ranked The Most Heartbreaking Moments From This Is Us
Can any of us watch This Is Us without bawling our eyes out?! It's a rhetorical question at this point. Since the family drama premiered in September 2016, we have all been totally obsessed. It's hard not to love a show that is basically all about emotional moments.
Season two premiered on September 26th and the episodes that have aired so far are, of course, completely amazing. Which is exactly what we expected. We can't wait to see what happens next to The Big Three (siblings Randall, Kate, and Kevin) and learn more about their family life growing up with their parents, Rebecca and Jack Pearson. But first, let's take a look back at the moments that have made us cry so far. Because we all know that it's not possible to watch this show without a few boxes of tissues. Here are the most heartbreaking moments from This Is Us. And, yes, there are major spoilers ahead (but we're all caught up on the best show ever, aren't we?).
15 Toby's Christmas Heart Attack
Since the first moment that we saw Toby court Kate, we were in. We knew that he really cared about her and that he was going to do everything that he could to make her happy and prove how much he loved her. Thankfully, things are still working out for the two of them and they're happily engaged.
When Toby had a heart attack in the episode "Last Christmas", it was truly heartbreaking. We definitely thought that he was a goner and that we were never going to see him again. We couldn't imagine him not being with Kate anymore. Of course he recovered and he seems to be doing well. But we're still pretty traumatized from that moment. Here's hoping that the next time the Pearsons celebrate the holidays, no one will get sick or have to be rushed to the hospital. Is that too much to ask for?!
14 Beth And Randall's Adoption Fight
When we learned that Randall wanted to adopt a baby in the season one finale, "Moonshadow", it was really happy news. We had watched him suffer so much in the time leading up until that moment, from losing his birth father to having a breakdown at the office (more on that later).
Recently, in the first two episodes of the second season, Beth and Randall had a pretty big argument over adopting a baby. While Randall was totally on board with it, he soon realized that Beth was having second thoughts… and she was being kind of passive aggressive about it. Sorry, Beth. Still love you. But that's just what happened. After a fight and some harsh words and a ton of tension, Beth suggested fostering an older kid and now the couple is back to normal. Phew.
13 When Kate Was Teased At The Pool
Ugh. This was a totally heartbreaking moment for us fans to watch and we still hate thinking about it. Kate is such a lovely character. We would definitely be friends with her if she was real (but she's definitely real to us).
In the first season episode called -- what else -- "The Pool", Kate and her family spent a summer afternoon at the local pool. Sounds like a totally normal, peaceful thing to do, right? Wrong. Kate had to face a bunch of classmates who laughed at her and made fun of her for not being as thin as them. It's horrible that kids behave that way and can be so mean. We can all relate to this moment on some level since we have probably all been bullied or teased for different things, even if we were never teased for something that had to do with our weight specifically.
12 When Jack Learned Miguel And Shelly Were Splitting Up
While this might have seemed like a small moment on the show, it totally counts as heartbreaking because it made Jack really think long and hard about his marriage to Rebecca. It seemed like the first time he realized that maybe love isn't always enough and that sometimes two people just can't make it work, no matter how much they care about each other or how much they thought they would be together forever.
In "I Call Marriage," Miguel told Jack over some drinks that he and Shelly were getting divorced, and it really freaked Jack out. He realized that he had to commit to Rebecca even more if he didn't want that to happen to them. This was also a big moment for us fans since we realized that maybe Jack and Rebecca's marriage wasn't as perfect and romantic as we thought. Hmmm…
11 When No One Would Come To Randall's Birthday Party
There is literally nothing worse than a children's birthday party. For the adults, they have to make small talk with the other parents and there's usually a ton of tension and drama. For the kids, they have to deal with bullies, classmates who don't even want to be there, cliques, teasing, and more. Kids can truly be evil sometimes.
When The Big Three had a joint birthday bash for their tenth birthday in the episode "Three Sentences," it became obvious that the kids' didn't have their own parties in case no one came to Randall's. Ouch. That is just the worst. Even so, Randall only had a few kids from his class there and the rest of them were there for Kate and Kevin. Randall had such a rough time growing up and it's truly awful learning about that in flashbacks. We love Randall so much. He didn't deserve any of that.
10 When Jack Got Into A Car Drunk To See Rebecca Sing
Oh Jack. Drinking and driving is just never a good idea. This was such a sad moment since we started to see cracks in Jack and Rebecca's marriage and we started to realize that maybe Jack was not the flawless human being that we had thought up until then.
When Rebecca went on tour to sing with a band, it was a huge deal for her, and yet Jack was not on board. In "Moonshadow," the season one finale, Rebecca had a gig in Cleveland and Jack got into the car to head over there… but not without drinking a lot beforehand. It was definitely a disaster waiting to happen (literally, since he hit Rebecca's bandmate Ben, a guy that she used to date). Now that we know more about Jack, this moment seems even harder to take.
9 Flashbacks From William's Sad Life
William was such a lovely character, wasn't he? He was sweet, he was funny, he was charming, and most of all, he was interesting. It's amazing to think what a hard life he had when we saw what a zest for life he had near the end of his.
When we learned more about William in a series of flashbacks in the episode "Memphis," we saw that he had never really been able to get on his feet. He was playing music, which was always his passion in life, but then he gave a lot up in order to help his mom when she developed an illness. We also saw more of William before he had Randall in the episode "Kyle" and saw him met Randall's birth mom on a bus. They fell in love and it was great… until they both got into drugs. And that's why Randall was left at a fire station with no parents (and thankfully adopted by Jack and Rebecca). We're all crying now, right?!
8 The Big Twist
The pilot is definitely a heartbreaking episode. It introduced us to The Big Three before we even knew who they really were. All we knew at first was that Kate, Kevin, and Randall seemed like really cool, funny, smart, and interesting people. And when we saw that Jack and Rebecca had lost one baby and were going to adopt another one, it was enough to pull at our heartstrings pretty much forever.
The big twist at the end of the pilot is one of the best TV moments ever. We just have to go there. It really was epic. When we learned that Jack and Rebecca were actually Randall, Kevin, and Kate's parents, and that we were learning more about them in the past, it was a lot to take. Some of us probably watched those final moments over and over again just to really let all of the emotions sink in. Whoa.
7 Randall Learning Rebecca Actually Knew William
In "Pilgrim Rick," the Thanksgiving episode in season one, William learned that his mom actually was in touch with William from pretty much the very beginning. This was absolutely devastating news to him since he had been searching for his birth dad and he really, really wanted to know more about his birth family and where he came from.
Rebecca felt super guilty and hated that she kept William a secret, but we got the feeling that she didn't completely understand why this was such a big deal for Randall. But we did. We knew that Randall had spent his entire childhood and his adult life up until that moment wondering if he belonged anywhere. He had struggled so much with feeling different and he just wanted some answers. We get it.
6 Jack's Ghost Visited Randall At The Cabin
If there's anything more emotional than seeing a character interact with the ghost of his dad, well, we don't know what that could possibly be. When Randall got a visit from Jack in ghost form in the episode "The Trip," it was a lot for us to handle. We would say that we can't even, but… we totally can since we're so addicted to this show.
Randall needed some fatherly advice and Jack totally delivered, even in spirit form. But it wasn't creepy at all. It was just great. Jack explained that Rebecca meant well and honestly had no bad intentions. While Randall was still super pissed off and upset, we could tell that this moment helped him a lot. We're super glad that he and Rebecca have made up by now. It would be way too sad if they were still fighting, or even worse, not talking at all.
5 Jack And Rebecca's Season One Finale Fight
Rebecca and Jack had a crazy fight in the season one finale and it was honestly all anyone could talk about for a while there (aka March 2017). It was impossible to go online or on social media without seeing major spoilers… but hey, we would never want to wait to watch an episode of This Is Us anyway. It's too good.
This was a fascinating fight since both of them were definitely right. Rebecca felt that Jack should have supported her musical ambitions and should have been more on board with her going on tour. She also seemed to blame him for the fact that she gave up on her singing in order to raise their kids. Jack's POV was that he had given up a lot as well and that he also had dreams. It was rough to watch and still makes us shudder.
4 Randall's Emotional Breakdown
Some fans might have known that Randall was gearing up for a big emotional breakdown since he has always seemed fairly anxious, but most of us were probably pretty shocked when he had a serious anxiety attack at his office in the episode "Jack's Pearson Son."
It happened on the night that Kevin's play was premiering, of course, because that's the way that these things go (and this also makes things even more dramatic). Kevin left to go help his brother because he knew that from growing up, Randall would often have anxiety attacks. The moment was praised by critics for being so realistic and not shying away from how scary it really feels to panic that much. Our hearts broke for Randall, who is just such a good, sweet guy, and it was so nice to see Kevin looking out for him.
3 William And Randall's Final Road Trip
In "Memphis," William wants to go on one more road trip, so Randall goes with him. It might seem like a typical father/son vacation, except for the fact that it wasn't a vacation at all. Since William knew that he was dying, he wanted to go back to his home and see whatever family members he could. Randall was game and it was a truly emotional episode.
It's pretty hard to describe how it feels to spend time with someone who knows that they won't be around much longer. We definitely all spent this entire episode bawling our eyes out. It would have been really weird if we didn't. We could feel how much William regretted and how much he enjoyed his life in his later years, particularly when he got to spend time with Randall and his family.
2 When Jack Told Kate About His Alcoholism
This heartbreaking moment happened in the second episode of season two, "A Manny-Splendored Thing," which just proves that season two is gearing up to be emotional AF.
Jack came into Kate's bedroom and told her the truth: he was an alcoholic and that was why he and Rebecca fought and it was also why he left home for a while there. We could see that this broke Kate's heart and she put his face in her hands and gave him a big hug. Ugh. We can't even take it. It's just too sweet and too sad. No kid should ever have to hear something like that from their parent. We do give Jack props for not lying to the kids, though, because that would have been even more horrible.
1 Finding Out That Jack Died
Oh man. This was a tough moment for This Is Us fans. We've loved Jack Pearson, played by the super talented (and super handsome) Milo Ventimiglia, since the first moment that we saw him in the pilot. He's just the best. Sure, we know that he has a lot of problems and those are becoming more and more clear with every episode, but no one is perfect.
The number one most heartbreaking moment on the show? That would definitely be when we found out that Jack died. That happened back in episode five, called "The Game Plan," when we discovered that Kate has a ritual: she watches football alone and thinks about her dad. Because he died. And she has his ashes on her mantel. Yup. That was tough for us and it gets even harder everytime we see Jack on screen. We're just constantly asking, how did he die? When did he die? When are we going to get more answers? And, yes, thinking about Jack breaks our hearts every single time. Sigh.
