The Cast Of True Blood What They Looked Like In Their First Episode vs. Now
Were you completely obsessed with True Blood? The series attracted vampire lovers, but also people who were never a fan of vampire shows. True Blood is based on a book called The Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris. It's about vampires and humans who co-exist in a small town called Bon Temps in Louisiana. Vampires don't have to feed on humans (although some still do) because of synthetic blood called TruBlood. Overall, the plot's interesting, and we also fell in love with the characters. Some of us probably fanned ourselves so many times because of the gorgeous men. Right? Vampire Bill, Eric Northman, Jason Stackhouse, etc.
The Twilight series and The Vampire Diaries are popular, too, and they're PG-13. True Blood, on the other hand, is filled with racier moments because it's HBO (not that we're complaining). It did, however, break our hearts when the series ended after seven seasons in 2014. Not all of us enjoyed watching other TV series after because it just wasn't the same…
We can't believe it's been ten years since the horror-fantasy True Blood series made its premiere in 2008. Take a look at the list below to see how much of the cast members have changed since their first episode!
15 Anna Paquin: Telepathic Waitress, Sookie Stackhouse
Southern belle Sookie Stackhouse works as a waitress at Merlotte's Bar and Grill. One of the most interesting facts about her is that she's half human and half fairy. She has powers, too. She's telepathic - she can hear everyone's thoughts except vampire's. She can also shoot fairy light from her hand. Because she's part fairy, vampires are out to get her. Her fairy blood allows them to walk in the daylight.
Anna Paquin continues to work steadily after True Blood series ended. She did the voice for The Good Dinosaur, and she's starred in a few TV series. She's currently a lead actress in a TV series Bellevue where she plays detective. She also plays Robert De Niro's daughter in Netflix's The Irishman that's set to be released next year.
14 Stephen Moyer: Sookie's Vampire Boyfriend, Bill Compton
The most compassionate vampire Bill Compton falls in love with Sookie Stackhouse and becomes her vampire boyfriend. The people of Bon Temps may not have been fond of their relationship because he's a vampire, but we understand why Sookie fell for him. Vampire Bill is undeniably attractive! Also, he's very protective of Sookie that he even staked his fellow vampire who tried to attack her.
Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin's characters have intense chemistry on-screen, and the co-stars took their romance off-screen. They got married, and the couple has twins together. After True Blood series ended, Stephen moved on to other TV series. He's currently in a supernatural TV series The Gifted. It's part of an X-Men franchise. Ironically, Anna played Rogue in X-Men films.
13 Alexander Skarsgård: Hunky Vampire, Eric Northman
It's possible that some fans looked forward to watching True Blood because of this hunky vampire Eric Northman. He's 6'4 tall, and he's absolutely gorgeous! He's got the ladies swooning over him left and right. The 1,000-year-old bad boy vampire is a Sheriff of Area 5 in Louisiana and the owner of a bar called Fangtasia. He also falls in love with Sookie. What a lucky gal!
After True Blood's series finale, Alexander Skarsgård kept himself busy. He starred in Zoolander 2 (he was in the first one back in 2001). He was Tarzan in The Legend of Tarzan. His Netflix movie Mute was released in February. He also won an Emmy for Big Little Lies. Fortunately, we'll be seeing more of him in films this year.
12 Ryan Kwanten: Sookie's Womanizing Brother, Jason Stackhouse
Sookie Stackhouse's older brother Jason Stackhouse doesn't have fairy blood like her. He's a full human, and he's well-known as a womanizer in Bon Temps. He pretty much had a tryst with every girl in town. It's hard to resist him - he's good-looking and charming. Unfortunately, Jason was at one point a suspect in the murder case when a couple of women he slept with turned up dead. He later becomes a police officer.
Australian actor Ryan Kwanten has been active in the entertainment industry after True Blood. The movies like Reach Me and Kidnapping Mr. Heineken aren't exactly blockbusters, but he's doing well. He's the leading man in TV series The Oath where he plays the dirty cop, and that's set to be released sometime this month.
11 Sam Trammell: Everyone's Favorite Shapeshifter, Sam Merlotte
Everyone's favorite shapeshifter Sam Merlotte is the owner of Merlotte's bar where Sookie Stackhouse works as a waitress. He has romantic feelings for Sookie and wants to protect her from the crimes in town. He shifts into a border collie to keep an eye on her. Sam's also not a fan of vampires, so it worries him when Sookie gets too close to Vampire Bill.
After True Blood ended in 2014, Sam Trammell has guest starred on other TV series. He played Ben in a couple of episodes of This Is Us. He was in one episode of Training Day and Berlin Station. He's also filmed movies like I Am Wrath starring John Travolta. We'd love to see more of him, so hopefully, he finds a show where he's a fixed cast member.
10 Rutina Wesley: Sookie's Best Friend, Tara Thornton
Tara Thornton and Sookie Stackhouse have been best friends since they were kids. Tara knows about Sookie's telepathic power, and Sookie knows about Tara's tough life living with an alcoholic mother. Tara's had a crush on Sookie's brother Jason for a long while, but she has hooked up with her boss Sam Merlotte while working as a bartender at Merlotte's. She later becomes a vampire after she takes a bullet to protect Sookie.
Rutina Wesley has appeared on small films, but she pretty much stuck with TV series. She's guest starred on a couple of episodes on Hannibal and Arrow. She currently has a leading role in Oprah Winfrey's Network TV series Queen Sugar, which has been renewed for season three. Also, congratulations are in order because Tara's engaged to her girlfriend!
9 Chris Bauer: Grumpy Sheriff, Andy Bellefleur
Sheriff Andy Bellefleur is a grumpy, stubborn man. He grew up in Bon Temps, and the people in town know him as just Andy. He feels like they don't respect him as a detective, and that bothers him. Anyway - his assignment is to investigate the murders of several women, and he suspects Jason Stackhouse is responsible for it. He even thinks that Jason killed his own grandmother.
Chris Bauer, like his character Andy, has struggled with substances. He got sober right after he got the part in True Blood. Good for him! After the series ended, he had a lot of projects. He starred in movies Tomorrowland, Money Monster, and Sully. He's also made appearances on TV series like American Crime Story where he played Detective Tom Lange.
8 Kristin Bauer van Straten: Eric's Sidekick, Pam De Beaufort
The fashionable vampire Pam Beaufort is a breath of fresh air with her no-nonsense attitude. We can't get enough of her dry sense of humor. She takes care of Fangtasia with Eric Northman who she's extremely loyal to because he's her maker. Basically, she's his sidekick, and she'll do anything for him. Pam also becomes a maker herself when she turns Tara Thornton into a vampire.
After True Blood, Kristin Bauer van Straten has appeared in films like Nocturnal Animals. She also played the villain Maleficent in a couple of episodes of the hit TV Series Once Upon A Time. Her latest work is doing the voice for Killer Frost in Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay. Hopefully, in the near future, we'll get to see her more on-screen.
7 Debora Ann Woll: Rebellious Young Vampire, Jessica Hamby
Jessica Hamby is the baby vampire of Bill Compton. He didn't want to, but his punishment was to turn her into a vampire after staking his fellow vampire Longshadow who tried to kill Sookie. Jessica's young and rebellious. She's often disciplined for her actions while she tries to adjust to a new lifestyle. She's also never been in love until she met Hoyt Fortenberry.
Deborah Ann Woll has worked in films, but she's been mostly busy with Marvel series on Netflix. She plays Karen Page in Daredevil, and the series is renewed for season three. She also had recurring roles on The Defenders and The Punisher. We're not sure if she'll be on season two of The Punisher, but we certainly hope so because she and Frank have great chemistry.
6 Nelson Ellis: Sassy & Flamboyant, Lafayette Reynolds
Lafayette Reynolds is the sassy and flamboyant gay cousin of Tara Thornton. He's funny and fabulous! He always tells it like it is, and we admire that about him. Lafayette's a short order cook at Merlotte's, but he's also a dealer who sells vampire blood known as V. He later finds out that he can contact dead spirits and is, therefore, a medium.
Nelsan Ellis portrayed Lafayette to perfection. After True Blood series finale, he continued to act in films and TV series. He was in The Stanford Prison Experiment, and he had a recurring role in Elementary as Shinwell Johnson. Unfortunately, he died last year at the age of 39. He struggled with alcoholism, and while trying to quit the addiction, the alcohol withdrawal complications led him to heart failure.
5 Carrie Preston: Four-Time Divorcee & Single Mother, Arlene Fowler
Arlene Fowler is a four-time divorcee and a single mom who works as a waitress at Merlotte's with Sookie. Arlene doesn't have much luck with romance. She dates Rene who kills women that have been with vampires. After he's killed, she marries Terry Bellefleur until he dies. Arlene has also been open about her anti-vampires. She doesn't like that Sookie's in a relationship with Vampire Bill, but she eventually dates one named Keith.
Carrie Preston has worked nonstop since the series ended. Her resume is quite long. She had parts in movies, but they weren't her finest. She's been mostly in TV series like Happyish, The Good Wife, Crowded, Person of Interest, The Good Fight, etc. It's clear that she's doing well because some of the shows are a hit.
4 Joe Manganiello: Handsome Werewolf, Alcide Herveaux
We couldn't keep our eyes off of the handsome werewolf Alcide Hevereaux when he joined the series. His incredible physique and perfect abs make it hard not to swoon! Eric Northman sends Alcide to Sookie to help her find Bill when he's kidnapped. He doesn't have a choice but to obey because he wants to clear the debt his father Jackson has with Eric.
Joe Manganiello kept himself busy after True Blood ended. He was in Magic Mike 2 (and Magic Mike in 2012) where he showed off his insane moves. He did the voice for Hefty Smurfs in Smurfs: The Lost Village. He currently has many films lined up for this year, and we look forward to seeing him on-screen soon. Joe is also married to the beautiful Sofia Vergara.
3 Lauren Bowles: A Practicing Wiccan, Holly Cleary
Holly Cleary works as a waitress at Merlotte's with Arlene and Sookie. Holly's a single mother like Arlene. Besides being a waitress, she's also a practicing Wiccan. Bon Temps is a place filled with interesting people, especially at Merlotte's. Sookie's a telepathic waitress, Sam's a shapeshifter boss, and Lafayette's a medium. Anyway - Holly tries to help Arlene get a miscarriage by performing a ritual which did not work. She also gets romantically involved with Sheriff Andy.
Lauren Bowles has done a lot of work after the series finale. She was in an episode of Stalker, Scandal, NCIS: Los Angeles, Rosewood, Rush Hour, and Modern Family. She played Monica in a few episodes of Veep, and she's related to Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Besides TV series, she has also worked in films.
2 Todd Lowe: Iraq War Veteran, Terry Bellefleur
Terry Bellefleur is Sheriff Andy's cousin, and he works as a cook at Merlotte's. While working at Merlotte's, he starts to date Arlene Fowler, and they get married later. Terry's an Iraq war veteran who suffers from PTSD. He asks his buddy from the Marines to kill him. Arlene worries about him and gets a vampire to glamour him. Unfortunately, Terry gets shot as he takes the garbage out.
Todd Lowe has appeared in short films a couple of times, but he stuck with TV series. He had roles in Criminal Minds, Ave 43, and Shooter. He played Zack Van Gerbil in Gilmore Girls, and he came back for Netflix's Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. He seems to be living the quiet life compared to other True Blood cast members.
1 Jim Parrack: Jessica's First Love, Hoyt Fortenberry
Hoyt Fortenberry is a sweet guy who has no problems with vampires. He's also Jason Stackhouse's best friend. He's different from Jason when it comes to women. Jason likes to hook up with a lot of women, but Hoyt takes the relationship seriously. He remains a virgin until he meets Jessica Hamby and falls head over heels for her. They get married.
Jim Parrack has been busy with films and TV series after True Blood ended. It seems like he didn't take any break from acting. He was in a couple of short films, but he played Sergeant Binkowski in the movie Fury starring Brad Pitt. He was also in Suicide Squad as Frost. By the way, he told Vulture in an interview that he likes to drink blood occasionally.
