Celebrity Brides Who Were Absolutely Gorgeous
When we're getting ready to pledge our life and love to that special someone, we want everything to be perfect. The guest list, the food, the music, and, of course, the dress. More than anything else, most girls fantasize about what their dream dress will look like. Will they go traditional with something white or ivory, or choose a bolder colour, having declared white passé? Will it be a cocktail length, or something with a princess-y train? Do they want something poofy with a wide, full skirt, perfect for twirling, or something sleeker? Are veils out? Are flower crowns in? Can you only pull off a tiara if you're very rich or very famous?
It's easy to get caught up in the details, since the details make the dress! More often than not, we know exactly what we DON'T want more than what we do! Thankfully, we have celebrities to turn to for some much-needed wedding inspo. They're basically real-life Pinterest boards! However, just like money can't buy happiness, money can't always buy taste and style. While we definitely have some gorgeous brides who give us major envy, we also have some that definitely fall short of the mark. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but some of these? Yeesh.
15 CRINGE: Katie Price's Pink Poof
Choosing to go colourful on your wedding day can be a bit of a gamble. While many brides are all about the traditional and classic ivory, cream, or white, more and more brides-to-be want something that speaks to them on an individual basis, something that no one else has.
While we're all for embracing your personal sense of style, maybe don't go for the Pepto-Bismol Princess look that British star Katie Price opted for at her 2004 wedding to Peter Andre. Largely considered by many to be one of the worst celebrity wedding dresses of all time, it's easy to see why. The bubblegum pink Barbie-style dress featured a low-cut, bejewelled bodice and ridiculously gigantic skirt that measured five metres wide (plus a seven-metre train). And check out that tiara! We don't even have to feel bad about insulting it, either, since Price has since said that the gown was her biggest fashion faux-pas, and considering how many fashion crimes she's committed in the past, that says a lot!
14 GORGEOUS: Anna Camp Looks Pitch Perfect
If you want to look like a princess on your big day, take a cue from Pitch Perfect's Anna Camp, who looks like a royal vision in this lace-and-tulle creation by designer Reem Acra. Frothy gowns like this one aren't to everyone's tastes, but it's impossible to deny how stunning Camp looks in this princess-cut gown, complete with traditional veil.
Normally, when a star - or anyone for that matter - goes for a majorly voluminous gown on their wedding day, it can be a disaster. All that material and a full, layered skirt can turn into a case of the dress wearing the woman, rather than the other way around. Fortunately for Camp, this floral-appliquéd gown is styled perfectly and fits her like a glove, making it less bulky and more beautiful. If you're interested in something more traditional and feminine, use this aca-awesome take as your guide and you won't regret it!
13 CRINGE: Mama June's Camo Choice
It might seem like we're picking on coloured wedding dresses here, but we promise that's not the case! It's just - like with Mama June's here - they can more easily veer into trashy territory than their classic counterparts.
So, back to Mama June.
First off, camouflage is never a good idea for a formal event. If you want to pay homage to your redneck roots, camo formalwear is definitely the easiest way to do it. Since Mama June comes from a family that used to glorify in their squalor, thanks to TLC, this makes this hideous wedding dress the perfect choice! For her wedding to Sugar Bear back in 2013, the reality show bride chose to walk down the aisle in a camo dress with orange accents, that, naturally, matched the groom's attire of camo pants and an orange vest. Maybe it was the dress, maybe it was Mama June's taste for “sketti”, or maybe Sugar Bear had had enough of being in the spotlight, but surprisingly, the “I do's” didn't stick.
12 GORGEOUS: Miranda Kerr's Old Hollywood Homage
Headpieces don't always have to be ridiculous, just look at model Miranda Kerr. For her May 2017 wedding to Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel, Kerr showed why she has such a fashionable rep with her classic Hollywood glamour look on her wedding day.
Rather than have the tiara wear her, like Celine Dion, Kerr was able to ~werk it~ in a pearl-encrusted headdress, complete with a veil. Considering that her job as a Victoria's Secret model usually has Kerr showing a lot of skin, it's a surprising and gorgeous choice that she opted to be covered up, with a high neck and long sleeves. “A dress that fully covers you creates a sense of purity and mystery,” Kerr explained of her Dior wedding dress, which was inspired by Grace Kelly's 1956 royal wedding. Made of heavier silk decked with appliquéd lilies of the valley, Kerr gushed, “Honestly, I couldn't have imagined a more beautiful wedding dress.” Neither could we!
11 GORGEOUS: Reese Witherspoon's Pink Dream
Now this is how you do a coloured wedding dress! For her wedding to Hollywood agent Jim Toth, Reese Witherspoon chose something different from her first marriage to Ryan Phillippe. This time around, the Oscar-winning actress opted for a bluish-hued gown from Monique Lhuillier that featured a Chantilly lace corset and tulle A-line skirt. Classic with a twist, the gown is extremely flattering but also simple enough to let Witherspoon's natural beauty shine through.
Coloured wedding dresses - specifically, pink or blush dresses - have become a bigger trend in recent years as brides look for something different than the traditional white (because, let's face it, white can be a harsh shade that doesn't necessarily look good on everyone). Considering that celebs are often the harbingers of new trends, we've seen more and more of them rock the hue. Celebrities like Jessica Biel, Kaley Cuoco, and Gwen Stefani have all gone rose for their big day, but we think Reese did it best!
10 CRINGE: Celine Dion Goes Over the Top
Unlike Anna Camp, who rocked her massive wedding gown, Celine Dion's over-the-top choice is clearly dated and simply not that flattering. For her 1994 nuptials to the late René Angélil, Dion donned this elaborate Mirella and Steve Gentile gown that featured a way-too-huge 20-foot train. In all honesty, the dress looks more suited to a 1700s French court instead of walking down the aisle, thanks to its hooped skirt and intense detailing. The real fashion crime in the outfit, however, is the massive tiara the chanteuse has chosen to sit on top of her head. It's a strange choice that completes the French aristocratic look, because it looks like a powdered wig! Weighing in at seven pounds and totalling more than 2,000 crystals, we can't even imagine how Dion was able to keep herself upright for the duration of the ceremony! With all that glitz, it shouldn't surprise anyone that she ended up with a residency in Vegas!
9 GORGEOUS: Eva Longoria is Stylishly Simple
If you want something sleek and simple and not at all princess-y for your special day, then you'd better check out Eva Longoria's gown for some Pinterest-perfect inspo! For her third time walking down the aisle (she'd been previously married to US actor Tyler Christopher and NBA player Tony Parker), Longoria turned to a friend for help - designer Victoria Beckham! And clearly, it pays to have friends in high places! The silk crepe gown pictured here was just one of three dresses the actress donned for her 2016 nuptials to Pepe Baston. In addition to this one, she also wore another dress for post-dinner celebrations and a third for a civil ceremony the day before.
With its sweetheart neckline, simple accessories, and a single stalk of lily of the valley, Longoria was every minimalist bride's dream. Hey, if it's your BFF designing your gown for your big day, you'd better hope it was as perfect as this, right?
8 CRINGE: Kelis' Sour Milkshake
Few colours are as informal as lime green, so perhaps someone should have let musician Kelis know that before she walked down the aisle for her wedding to rapper Nas in 2005. Inspired by the colour of green grapes, according to designer Matthew Williamson, the gown featured a corset-style back and was covered in gold appliqués in shapes like hearts and flowers. Complete with a white fur bolero, the look was a little too over the top, but kind of perfect for the “Milkshake” singer.
It seems, however, that Kelis ended up feeling the same way about the too-green gown. Following her divorce from Nas, Kelis left most of the dress hanging up in the closet when she moved out. In response to their contentious divorce, Nas is shown holding the lime petticoat of the dress on his 2012 album Life is Good. With a dress that gaudy, however, we can't blame either of them for only keeping part of it!
7 GORGEOUS: Kate Moss Goes Boho Chic
When you're one of the biggest models in the world, you'd better pull out all the stops when you get married, and Kate Moss didn't disappoint! For her July 2011 wedding to musician Jamie Hince, Moss chose a 1920s-inspired gown designed by John Galliano that had elements of Zelda Fitzgerald while still in keeping with the supermodel's bohemian style (think flowing hair and shapeless outfits with structured accents). Vintage and unusual, this dress is definitely a keeper for any future bride who dreams of something with classic elements that is anything but boring.
Rather than choose something with a big skirt and loads of lace, the Jazz Age silhouette is great on Moss's famously waifish figure, but the colour and details are what really knock this gown out of the park. The sheer overlay neckline, the metallic accents, and the off-white colour all contribute to a look that is part-English rose, part-Great Gatsby, and altogether perfect.
6 CRINGE: Rita Wilson's '80s Nightmare
In all fairness to Rita Wilson, the dress she's wearing is peak '80s and therefore a totally trendy choice for the decade. Unfortunately, like most things that happened in the '80s, it hasn't aged well (unlike Wilson and husband Tom Hanks, who both look spectacular and are still going strong).
The pair's 1988 nuptials had Wilson in a short cocktail-style dress, which can be gorgeous if done right but fails to impress here, thanks to the frilly skirt, extra-long veil (see how it's bunched up around her chest), sheer white tights, and pointy-toe pumps. The look is just too dated to make it on anyone's dream dress list, but we really can't fault Wilson for simply choosing the style of the times - almost all '80s wedding dresses were terrible! From being too poofy to OD'ing on fussy details, the decade was not kind to brides looking to tie the knot. Apologies to Rita, but this dress just makes us cringe hard.
5 GORGEOUS: Amal Clooney's Loads of Lace
If you're going to wear the last dress created by a famous designer before his death, you'd better hope it's a showstopper! Luckily for Amal Clooney, her famous Oscar de la Renta gown may have been the designer's final creation, but it is arguably his best one yet.
The uber-flattering gown featured an off-the-shoulder neckline, yards of French lace that were crafted into a sweeping train, hand-embroidered pearls, and diamanté accents, proving that you can have bling and extravagance without looking like you fell into a pile of material and tacked together whatever you could find (looking at you, Kim Zolciak). Considering that Clooney was wedding eternal bachelor George, it seems perfect that he gown was one for the ages. Shockingly, this wasn't the only gown Clooney wore during her big day: later, she (like many other celebs) opted for a different reception gown and the following day traded in all that glamour for a simple pantsuit and wide-brimmed hat to tie the knot legally in a civil ceremony.
4 CRINGE: Kim Zolciak Shows Too Much
Did you really expect good taste from a Real Housewife? This atrocity was just one of three dresses Kim Zolciak wore to her $1 million nuptials back in 2011. Oh, and she picked it out before she'd even found her groom, by a whole three years! What you see here is Zolciak's first of the three, which cost a staggering $58k, but clearly money can't buy fashion sense, because this look is just atrocious. Featuring Swarovski crystals, pearl beads, and platinum thread, the dress goes beyond over-the-top and segues into tasteless territory. The fact that the gown looks like it's changed its mind as you scan the length of it is one thing (those ruffles along the middle are especially awful), but it also doesn't seem to fit Zolciak on top! We have all the sympathy in the world for busty ladies, and totally understand when brides want to look sexy on their special day, but this ends up looking more tacky than timeless.
3 GORGEOUS: Kate Middleton's Iconic Gown
How could we not have Kate Middleton as one of our number one when it comes to celebrity wedding gowns? A real modern-day princess, Middleton's dress on her big day was seen across the globe, so you know it had to be picture perfect to deal with that much scrutiny.
Many articles have been written about the dress, which was designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen. The underskirt was an example of hard work and artistic skill, with layers of tulle and lace; the full lace sleeves that featured tons of tiny, delicate flowers were meant to be a modern nod to past royals, and an exhibit of modesty; the train was a staggering nine feet long (which is nothing compared to Princess Diana's wedding train, which was a ridiculous 25 feet!); and, of course, the famous tiara was lent to the new Duchess by the Queen herself. Another adorable detail that not many know about: Designer Burton sewed a tony blue ribbon on the inside, for Middleton's “something blue”!
2 CRINGE: Pamela Anderson's Non-Traditional Option
While we definitely can't call this unfortunate choice of wedding attire a dress, we definitely had to include it on this list because of the collective cringe it elicited!
Now, we wouldn't expect a wedding to Kid Rock to be a classy affair, but it sinks to a whole other level when you're showing off your bodacious body in nothing but a white string bikini and a captain's hat. We know that Pamela Anderson may not be the pinnacle of good taste, but really? Even if you're looking to have a beach wedding, may we suggest something floaty and going sans shoes, rather than looking like you're just waiting to jump into the surf? This was back in 2006, when Anderson was oscillating between Kid Rock and her ex Tommy Lee, so perhaps her wardrobe choice can be forgiven, owing to her state of mind at the time. Adding insult to injury, though, is the fact that her new hubby took about as much care with his own appearance, donning a fedora, jeans, and no shirt.
1 GORGEOUS: Gabrielle Union's Classic Take
Pam may have classed things way, way down, but thankfully we have Gabrielle Union bringing us back to stylish heights with her classic yet contemporary look as a modern day princess. If you dream of a dress that is equal parts sexy, current, and classic, then this is the kind of dress you want! Rather than use bling or eye-catching details to draw attention to the gown, Union's gorgeous shape and the structure of the dress itself are all that were needed to make her glow for her 2014 wedding to NBA star Dwayne Wade.
Designed by Dennis Basso, Union was surprisingly hands-on for the design of her dress, saying she wanted it to echo her husband-to-be's taste for high fashion while also making her look damn good! Using subtle beading with pearls and crystals - plus a bodice and corset built specifically for the actress, no big deal - the look is still super glam without looking over the top - perfect for the unassuming bride who wants gorgeous, not gaudy.
