8 Celebs Who Are Proud Of Their Gay Children And 8 Who Couldn't Care Less

When it comes to the up and coming issues of LGBT, there are plenty of mixed opinions across the board. These opinions can come into play in many areas of our everyday lives, from the people we come into contact with to politics. It's all unavoidable and totally important.

There's a more personal side to this though-the way that people's families are affected by the news. Some of these family members take it really well and are totally supportive. Other relatives remain neutral and don't really care. Finally, some of them take the announcement terribly. This leads to broken relationships and family tension. As most of us will assume, celebrities coming out to their families is just as big of a deal to them as it is to any other member of the LGBT group. There are fears and celebrations to be had in any circumstances. Being a celebrity adds to the stress, though!

The kids of celebrities have also been stepping out of the closet and into the spotlight. These celeb children have been met with both support and criticism, as mentioned before. They have to worry about how the public accepts the news. Equally importantly are the parents' reactions.

Let's take a look at some of the celebrity parents whose children have come out to them over the years. Some of these responses have been positive and others haven't!

    16 Couldn't Care Less: Jon Voight-Mental Issues

We all know that Jon Voight has had a rocky relationship with Angelina Jolie for most of Jolie's life. They've been estranged and only made peace recently after Jolie's mom passed away. While Marcheline-Jolie's mother-was alive, Voight cheated on her and they eventually divorced.

Naturally, we won't expect much from a father who hasn't been around for most of his daughter's life. To make things worse, he has made some negative comments about her bisexuality. His original statement was back in 2002 when he said that he was to blame for Jolie's “serious mental issues.”

Unfortunately, Voight categorizes Jolie's homosexuality as a mental issue as well. He's not supportive of her being bisexual, but he also wasn't supportive for most of her life anyway. We'll take a wild guess and assume she doesn't care about his opinion.

15 Proud Parent: Mormon Marie Osmond

It isn't all that shocking when parents are supportive of their kiddos-no matter what. Most good parents should be, right? As long as the kids are safe, healthy and happy, plenty of parents can support their decisions. One place where that may not be true is religion.

Marie Osmond is a member of the Mormon religion, which could make it tricky for her to accept her daughter's lifestyle. Jessica-the daughter of Osmond-came out as a lesbian. Osmond has been supportive of her daughter from the beginning and has even stepped out and become a part of several LGBT organizations. In an interview, she said, “I don't think God made only one color flower. I think he made many.” This was in reference to her accepting her daughter's news. We're glad that Jessica has her mother's support!

    14 Couldn't Care Less: R. Kelly Can't Handle It

The R&B performer R. Kelly is having some problems with his daughter, Jaya Kelly. While we may question the parenting styles of plenty of celebrities, this one comes with good reason. Kelly is choosing to deny Jaya's transgender claims, which began back in 2014.

Jaya asked to be called a boy and wanted to go by the name of Jay. This seemed simple enough, but Kelly couldn't deal. He refuses to refer to Jaya as his son and gets defensive in interviews. He thinks that Jaya believes everything she reads and just fell for something.

Kelly doesn't care about his daughter in the right way about her being transgender. Unfortunately, he probably wants to forget it ever happened. Luckily, Jaya's mother-Drea Kelly-is on her side and has been helpful!

13 Proud Parent: Magic Johnson And His Safety Talks

While most of the parents on this list accept their children's lifestyles as members of the LGBT community, Magic Johnson is being supportive in another area as well. Johnson and his wife Cookie have a son who is 19 years old.

Elijah Johnson-better known as EJ-came out as gay back in 2013. Johnson immediately accepted his son for whom he really is and reminded him of the unconditional love he has for him.

Uniquely, Johnson then spoke with EJ about having safe sex. Johnson himself is HIV positive, so he understands the importance of being cautious. To his son, he said, “We just want you to love yourself and to make sure that you have all the information you need to protect yourself, and to protect your partner.”

    12 Couldn't Care Less: Dylan-A No-Show

It's impossible to not know who Bob Dylan is. What we all aren't so aware of is his daughter. Desiree Dennis-Dylan is known as Dylan's “secret daughter.” He has managed to keep her undercover fairly well throughout her life, but we aren't exactly sure why.

To this day, Dylan isn't very open about Desiree. He doesn't seem to play a big role in her life, for whatever reason. There is a chance that it has to do with her sexuality, but that wasn't always a given back when she was young.

Desiree is a lesbian and she was with her partner for several years before they decided to tie the knot. In 2013, Desiree got engaged to Kayla Simpson. They got married the next year, appropriately sending an invite to Dylan. He failed to show up, which makes us think he's unsupportive of his daughter's lifestyle.

11 Proud Parent: Cybill Shepherd-Doubling Up

Because being LGBT is just now becoming more commonly accepted, it's still considered to be somewhat out of the ordinary. Some families don't have a single LGBT family member and some of us haven't met someone who identifies as gay.

Cybill Shepherd is somebody who knows two LGBT individuals very closely-they are her daughters. Shepherd is the mother of Clementine and April. Clementine came out first-as bisexual. Shortly after, April announced that she is a lesbian. Clementine has since married a man and is now a mother to her first child.

Shepherd has remained supportive of her daughters and she is also an activist for gay rights. She works to promote equality for LGBT couples in regards to marriage and having or adopting children. We wonder if her daughters inspired her to get started on this!

10 Couldn't Care Less: Brangelina Featuring Some Professional Help

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are some of the biggest names in Hollywood. They are two talented actors and they are also known for their wild bunch of six children. The original couple recently got a divorce, but this isn't about them as much as it is about their daughter, Shiloh Jolie-Pitt.

Shiloh asks to be identified as a boy and wants to be called John. Shiloh likes to wear boys' clothing and also snags garments from her brothers' closets. When the daughter first started wanting to be identified as a boy, her parents were seeking professional help. They didn't know how to handle it.

Eventually, the parents came around and began supporting Shiloh. They allowed her to get her hair cut short, too! Overall, the family has become more open with Shiloh's preferences.

9 Proud Parent: Cher And Her Readiness To Learn

Because not everyone is aware of the details surrounding LGBT, there are some misconceptions. People will make assumptions and stereotype some individuals. Luckily, Cher decided to make one of the best possible decisions! Her son-who was born a female-joined the LGBT community.

At the age of 18, Chaz Bono-then Chastity Bono-came out to his parents. Bono said that he was a lesbian. A few years later, Bono underwent the transformation from female to male. This was from 2008-2010.

It wasn't as simple as it may seem because Cher didn't think it was easy to accept the news. She has always been supportive, though! She shared, “I just love being a woman so much, but if I woke up tomorrow and was a man, I couldn't function.”

8 Couldn't Care Less: Barbra Streisand-Not So Sure

Barbra Streisand and Elliot Gould had a son together. The two are no longer together, but they each have decent relationships with their son, Jason Gould.

From the time that Jason was a young boy, he was believed to be gay. At the age of eight, he knew he was gay. When he was 12 years old, Jon Peters disclosed to Streisand that he thought that Jason was gay.

Finally, the official announcement was public. In the early '90s, Jason came out as gay due to a tabloid breaking the news for him. His parents didn't have the greatest reactions and were quick to blame their busy careers and time away from home on his sexuality.

Eventually, Streisand stepped up and tried to learn more about LGBT lifestyles. This helped her to become more understanding, but it was a tricky task at the beginning.

7 Proud Parent: Sally Field-An Ally For All

The least we would hope is that a parent would accept their child no matter what! Some parents go above and beyond, though. They will do anything to help and support their kids. Sally Field is one of these parents!

Field is the mother of Sam, who is an openly gay man. From the get-go, Field has been entirely supportive of her son. She welcomes him as an individual and as her child. Her support for the LGBT community goes outside of the family, though!

Field received an award in 2012 for her work with the Human Rights Campaign. She is an ally for equality and she is ready to stand up for anyone in the community who needs it! Sam is one lucky guy to have Field as his mom!

    6 Couldn't Care Less: Vanna White-Miscommunication

Vanna White has been famous for her work on Wheel of Fortune. We don't really know her for much outside of that, but there is something we should be aware of. White is the mother of Nicholas-or Nikko.

Nikko is now 23, but this all began when he was only 19 years old. At the time, he was living with Jaycee Akinsanya, who is a devoted member of Krishna. The two were boyfriends at the time, even though Akinsanya was 34 years old and a monk.

During this relationship, White was terrified that Akinsanya was dating Nikko simply for the family's money. White assumed that this was the case when Nikko asked for one of the family's millions to fund an ashram for some of the Krishna people. Whether or not this is the case, White seems to have some bad communication skills in this situation.

5 Proud Parent: It's In The Sheedys' Genes

Ally Sheedy isn't a very recognizable name-unless you're a movie buff. Most of us will recognize her from The Breakfast Club, though. She played Allison Reynolds in the film. Well, she's now a mother to Rebecca Lansbury.

Lansbury is an individual who doesn't follow gender labels. As a matter of fact, she refuses to believe in them. Because of this, she dates men and women. She also doesn't have any restrictions on her clothing choices.

This hasn't been a problem for Sheedy to accept, though! She has been entirely supportive of Lansbury's decisions and she seems to be proud of her daughter. This is interesting because Sheedy's own mother is a lesbian as well. The positive relationship probably helps with Lansbury's confidence and her willingness to be open!

    4 Couldn't Care Less: Belinda Carlisle-Husband Issues

Most of us will recognize Belinda Carlisle from the Go-Go's. Since her rise to fame in the '80s, she got married and had a son.

The son-James Duke Mason-came out as gay to his mom in 2007. At this time, he was 14 years old. Carlisle had to keep it a secret for three months before letting her husband know.

When Mason's dad heard the news, he claimed it was a phase. Even though Carlisle was supportive, her husband had some issues with grasping the fact that Mason was indeed gay. Over the years, she has spoken out about the situation and has offered support for families with LGBT community members.

3 Proud Parent: Gloria Vanderbilt-Built For This!

Gloria Vanderbilt is the mother of Anderson Cooper. Some of the celebrities who have made this list do not have famous children, but that isn't true for Vanderbilt. As many of us know, Cooper announced that he was gay back in 2012.

Since 2012, Vanderbilt has been right by his side and has been helpful through it all! She has not said anything negative and is always cheering him on. The two even wrote a book together called The Rainbow Comes and Goes: A Mother and Son On Life, Love, and Loss.

Vanderbilt has also shared that she hopes that her son settles down with a partner soon and adopts children. She obviously wants to be a grandmother! She recently told Cooper that she had her own lesbian relationship back in the day, which probably adds to the support she's given him.

2 Couldn't Care Less: No Big Deal For Alice Walker

For those who aren't aware, Alice Walker is a writer who is part of the LGBT community herself. She is also the mother of Rebecca Walker. These two have something in common beyond their last name.

At one point, Rebecca wrote about her childhood and mentioned how her mother neglected her. She said that, “As a little girl, I wasn't even allowed to play with dolls or stuffed toys in case they brought out a maternal instinct. It was drummed into me that being a mother, raising children and running a home were a form of slavery." This caused some turmoil between the women, but they have since been able to reconcile their differences.

It has also been announced that Rebecca is bisexual, which may have something to do with the way her mother brought her up.

1 Proud Parent: Warren Beatty And His Revolutionary Son

While we've seen that plenty of parents are proud of their children for their coming out stories and who they have become, Warren Beatty has been extra supportive of his son, Stephen. Stephen's mother is Annette Bening.

Stephen was born in 1992 as Kathlyn. He has since come out as transgender and identifies as a male. He has also undergone the transition period. Stephen is now an activist for the transgender community and uses his experiences and stories of conversion therapy in his work.

Beatty is very proud of his son and says, “He's a revolutionary, a genius, and my hero, as are all my children.” Bening appears to be supportive as well. All of this love and encouragement helps Stephen to continue to do his best in his activism and in his everyday life!
