20 TV Relationships That Were Total Goals (& 5 That Were Not)
Television can be used for many different things. Some like to use it to find out what is going on in the world, some may use it as a distraction for their kids in an attempt to get some work done. Then there are the people who like to use it to immerse themselves in a whole new world. A world full of adventure, action, supernatural occurrences, or just love.
There are some things that can occur on our favorite loved television shows. Things like people having powers, winning the lottery, zombie apocalypses, or even alien invasions.
The best part for many people though is watching relationships develop. That's right. When two people find each other, no matter the situation, and fall in love. A love so powerful, that no matter what happens, they can work things out. It doesn't matter if they are already married at the beginning of the show, or the love forms while we watch it, it still entraps us and sucks us in.
Then there are those couple that get together and we hate it. We hate every minute of it. What are they doing together? Whether it is because the relationship is unhealthy, or because they simply don't have chemistry, fans just don't want them together. Here are 20 television couples that we have come to love, and 5 that had no business being together.
25 Adam & Kristina Braverman "Parenthood"
Adam and Kristina Braverman, portrayed by Peter Krause and Monica Potter, are a married couple on the show Parenthood that a low of us married folk in the real world can relate to.
According to huffingtonpost.com, these two lovebirds support each other unconditionally and take the meaning “in sickness and in health” very seriously. There is nothing they wouldn't do for one another and their children.
No relationship is perfect though. They have their occasional fights here and there. What makes them great though, is that no matter what it is, they end it by working it out.
What makes this couple touch all our hearts though, is their ability to overcome anything, either big or small. They are defiantly #relationshipgoals.
24 Brad & Jane "Happy Endings"
According to huffingtonpost.com, Brad and Jane, portrayed by Damon Wayans Jr. and Eliza Coupe, are completely convincing as a couple on the show. Their bond, and love for one another as a married couple on the show grows stronger with each episode.
Happy Endings is one show that is known to a lot of people as an underrated comedy. With that being said; why does this couple get so much love?
Well, it is not only because this is the shows only married couple, but because the actors portraying them have such chemistry that they actually come off to all their fans as really being married. They have such brilliant comic timing and their ability to make their jokes and actions funny is so strong that some may say its dangerous.
23 Matthew Crawley & Lady Mary "Downton Abbey"
Matthew and Lady Mary is one couple that fans would say took their sweet time when it came to finally marry one another.
According to downtonabbey.wikia.com, Lady Mary Talbot, portrayed by Michelle Dockery, and Matthew Crawley, portrayed by Daniel Stevens, were together eight long years before finally tying the knot. It took two marriage proposals before Mary finally accepted, the first one coming five and a half years before that.
Matthew was persistent though and never gave up hope. He knew that from the moment he laid an eye on her that she was the one he wanted to spend the rest of his life with.
Fans of the show would agree they are clearly meant to be.
22 Jim & Pam Halpert "The Office"
When it comes to relationships in television shows, we see a lot of the time it typically starts with the couple being best-friends and then later realizing that they love each other. That is exactly what happened with Pam and Jim in the show The Office.
It all happened at the end of Season 2 when Jim, portrayed by John Krasinski, finally declared his love to Pam, portrayed by Jenna Fischer, who at the time was actually already engaged to wed someone else.
Eventually, according to huffingtonpost.com, the two got together, married and had kids, all while overcoming every challenge that came their way.
21 Snow White & Prince Charming "Once Upon a Time"
The show Once Upon A Time brought us a lot of great adventures, amazing fairytale stories, and a lot of different relationships and even some heartbreaks, but, according to huffingtonpost.com, the one couple that was the true definition of a fairytale relationship was Snow White and her adorable husband Prince Charming.
Snow White, portrayed by Ginnifer Goodwin, and her husband Prince Charming, portrayed by Josh Dallas, are riddled with ups and downs throughout the entire show.
From amnesia, to curses, psychotic parents, and giving up their daughter, they have been through it all. No matter what happens though, they never lose hope of true love and they always find each other.
What makes this storybook romance even more fulfilling is that the actors who play their roles are actually married in real life and have been proving for years that storybook romances really do happen.
20 Homer & Marge Simpsons "The Simpsons"
Homer and Marge Simpsons might just be cartoons, but their love for each other has hit home to a lot of fans of the show. These two have been through everything together, and I mean everything.
The Simpsons is one of the longest running shows on television today. What most fans probably don't know though is that the show originally got started in 1987. It all began when the creator, Matt Groening, made a few shorts to appear on the Tracey Ullman Show. Each member of the Simpsons family is actually named after a member of his own family, except for Bart who is substituted for his own name, according to en.wikipedia.org. The shorts lasted three seasons before Fox turned it into a half-hour prime time show in 1989.
Since then, Marge and Homer have been put through the ringer, even facing many extramarital temptations. In the end, though, they always pull through and stay true to one another. Their love for one another is stronger than anything else and keeps growing the longer they are together.
19 Leslie Knope & Ben Wyatt "Parks and Recreation"
Leslie Knope, portrayed by Amy Poehler, and Ben Wyatt, portrayed by Adam Scott, didn't always have it easy on the show Parks and Recreation.
When the relationship between the two first started, it was a relationship of contempt, according to huffingtonpost.com. As time went by, a love blossomed between the two, even though it was considered taboo.
It was after the couple decided to take a short break away from one another that their relationship really grew. It was after the hiatus that they would reunite and since then have become one of TV's endearing couples today.
18 Phil & Claire Dunphy "Modern Family"
Phil and Claire Dunphy are one married couple that is goals for a lot of people. No matter what happens, they always manage to work things out and are always there for one another.
Phil, portrayed by Ty Burrel, and Claire, portrayed by Julie Bowen, are two people that are absolutely perfect for one another. According to huffingtonpost.com, these two lovebirds each have their own set of imperfections that balance out the others.
Both Phil and Claire are full neurotic and are prone to mess something up in almost every episode they star in on Modern Family. Their love stays strong though. They are the perfect example of a modern couple in love.
17 Nikita & Michael "Nikita"
Nikita is one television show that has put its main spy couple through the ringer.
Nikita, who is played by Maggie Quigley, and Michael, played by Shane West, are a spy couple that has been through so much, it's a wonder what they are still doing together.
According to huffingtonpost.com, there have been illegitimate children brought into the picture, numerous near-death experiences, and even an amputation that occurred when Nikita was forced to cut off Michael's hand to save him from an explosion. How is it these two manage to keep their head straight and their relationship strong?
Whatever it is, they need to keep it up. These are two agents who are made for each other.
16 Lily Aldrin & Marshall Eriksen "How I Met Your Mother"
Alyson Hannigan had captured our hearts many times, but it is her role as Lily Aldrin in How I Met Your Mother, that she out dues herself.
From the very first episode, Lily and Marshall Eriksen, portrayed by Jason Segel, have made us all jealous with the love that they have for one another. According to huffingtonpost.com, it is thanks to this television couple that we now know that being in love doesn't mean one must ignore their friends and just focus on one another. A person can be in love and still hang out with their friends whenever they want.
15 Agron & Nasir "Spartacus"
It is hard to spark up, let along keep going, a romance in ancient Roman times when there was a battling going on almost every day.
That is exactly what Agron, portrayed by Dan Feuerriegel, and Nasir, portrayed by Pana Hema Taylor did, and they proved to everyone that love can be found anywhere, no matter what circumstances.
Agron and Nasir have been faced with many different obstacles while on Spartacus. According to huffingtonpost.com, no matter what these former slaves face though, their love for one keeps on growing.
14 Callie Torres And Arizona Robbins “Grey's Anatomy”
When it comes to Callie Torres, played by Sarah Ramirez, and Arizona Robbins, played by Jessica Capshaw, they have been through the grinder.
Grey's Anatomy is one show that is known to put its main cast through every possible disaster. Callie and Arizona's relationship is proof of that. According to huffingtonpost.com, between Arizona moving out of country for a while, to Callie getting pregnant by her best friend, the plane crash that made Arizona lose a leg, to many failed attempts at fixing their marriage, a divorce, and then ending with a bad custody battle, it is no wonder they did not work out and Callie moved to the other side of the country. It has been a crazy ride for these two.
In the end though, after Arizona decides to move to New York so her daughter can have both her mommies, we see what is a glimmer of hope that the two may, in fact, have a future together after all.
13 Emma Swan And Killian Hook “Once Upon A Time”
Emma and Killian's relationship didn't start off on a good note when they were first introduced together in Once Upon A Time.
Emma Swan, portrayed by Jennifer Morrison, is the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming. She is the baby that Snow and Prince were forced to give up after her birth to save her life. She has been through the ringer when it comes to finding out who she really is.
Killian, portrayed by Colin O'Donoghue, on the other hand, is a villain pirate with one goal: to end the crocodile, aka Rumpelstiltskin.
According to theodysseyonline.com, as time goes by, the two begin a friendship. Emma starts to change Killian and make him into a better person, and in the end, the two fall in love, get married, and even have a child.
12 Meredith Grey And Derek Shepard “Grey's Anatomy”
One rule a lot of workplaces have is that relationships are to be kept out of the workplace. They frown on anyone dating another co-worker due to drama and issues if the relationship doesn't work out.
Meredith Grey, portrayed by Ellen Pompeo, and Derek Shepard, portrayed by Patrick Dempsey, was one reason in the beginning as to why that rule is there. From one-night stands, to a million breakups, fans were on edge to see if this couple would really work or not.
According to theodysseyonline.com though, their mistakes and realizations are what makes this couple so relatable.
11 Nathan Scott And Haley James “One Tree Hill”
Time and time again, we have witnessed as young couples fall apart due to becoming serious too fast and at a young age.
That is exactly what happened to Nathan, played by James Lafferty, and Haley, played by Bethany Joy Lenz, who married in their junior year of high school.
Haley and Nathan are the perfect example of a couple who married too young and fell apart when things got too serious. But they actually worked things out in order to stay together.
A lot of stuff throughout their time on One Tree Hill. According to theodysseyonline.com, some stuff even seemed unrealistic at times, but no matter what happened, they handled challenges like adults and never stopped loving each other along the way.
10 Lady Sybil and Tom Branson “Downton Abbey”
Lady Mary and Matthew Crawley were not the only couple from Downton Abbey that were #relationshipgoals. When it comes to a classic love story, Lady Sybil, portrayed by Jessica Brown Findlay, and Tom Branson, portrayed by Allan Leech, are two people who are the definition of one.
Their love was a forbidden love. They were from different classes, but that did not stop them. Even when her family forbade her from seeing him, they still got married and had a child.
It is a shame that fans of the show did not get to see much of these two together though. According to theodysseyonline.com, sadly, Sybil passed shortly after the birth of their daughter, leaving Tom to raise the child alone.
9 Lorelai Gilmore And Luke Danes “Gilmore Girls”
Lorelai, played by Lauren Graham, and Luke, played by Scott Patterson, is one couple that proves that opposites attract. Some would say that it is because the couple was so opposite that their relationship was so perfect.
Their different personalities and traits are what evened them out, which is what made them work so well together.
According to theodysseyonline.com, Lorelai is known for being energetic, while Luke is more stoic. She talks a lot, while he does not, she is optimistic, and he is the complete opposite.
These two were far from the perfect couple. In fact, they spent more time apart than together, but no matter what, they were each other's person. They opened a lot of people's eyes too. Their relationship shows a lot of others how sometimes love is right there all along, one just has to accept it and go for it.
8 Kurt Hummel and Blaine Anderson “Glee”
Kurt Hummel, played by Chris Colfer, and Blaine Anderson, played by Darren Criss, are one couple that originally was only supposed to be friends on the show Glee, according to theodysseyonline.com.
Kurt and Chris are two high school sweethearts that always had constant struggles in their lives. Between fights at school and personal battles, they never really had a moment to breathe.
In the end, they never let any of the issues stand in their way, and proved that if someone wants something hard enough, there is no stopping them, they just must go for it.
7 Cory Matthews And Topanga Lawrence “Boy Meets World/Girl Meets World”
Most kids from the 90's who grew up loved watching Boy Meets World. They got to see Cory, played by Ben Savage, and Topanga, played by Danielle Fishel, as they went from hating one another, to becoming friends, to becoming boyfriend and girlfriend. What makes it even better is we even got to see them as parents in the sequel Girl Meets World.
We literally got to see them do it all!
According to theodysseyonline.com, what makes this couple even better though, is that they have done it all while supporting each other and making sure both of their dreams came true. They are the perfect example of #relationshipgoals.
6 Lucy And Ricky Ricardo “I Love Lucy”
One could not have a list of all the best couples, without ending it with Lucy and Ricky Ricardo from I Love Lucy. It's just not possible.
Lucy, played by Lucille Ball, and Ricky, played by Desi Arnaz, are what a lot of people would agree are not an ideal couple as today's standards go.
According to theodysseyonline.com though, it does not matter because they are still considered a stable couple. Like all couples, Lucy and Ricky had their problems. Like the saying goes, opposites attract, and boy were they opposites. They did whatever needed to be done to make their relationship work in the time period they were in.
They may not be #relationshipgoals in our time, but they sure were in their time. Read on to see the five that should not have happened!
5 Felicity & Oliver “Arrow”
Most fans were beyond overjoyed when Felicity, played by Emily Rickards, and Oliver, played by Stephen Amell, finally got together. Others, however, feel that this relationship should never have happened.
Their relationship starts off innocently enough, but it doesn't take long before it spirals and becomes toxic.
Felicity starts to become clingy, needy, and just all-around obsessive with Oliver, who is oblivious and allows her to take control and make decisions for him in a way to control his life.
According to thetalko.com, between Felicity's self-righteousness and Oliver's strong to desire to do the right thing, neither are happy, and the relationship is just super unhealthy.
4 George & Izzy “Grey's Anatomy”
On Grey's Anatomy, it is not uncommon for two hospital workers to at some point to hook up. Each hookup can either lead to just a casual fling, a marriage, or just an all-around messy relationship.
George O'Malley, portrayed by T.R. Knight, and Izzy Stevens, portrayed by Katherine Heigl, are two people from the show who thought they could be soulmates, but turned into a complete mess.
George and Izzie started off as really close friends, that should have stayed that way. When they realized they had feelings for one another, they decided to take it to the next level, which also resulted in George sleeping with his wife, according to thetalko.com. Their entire relationship together, which lasted all about five minutes, was them trying to figure out if they really wanted to be with each other.
In the end, they realized they were not meant to be and all the drama they caused by getting together was for nothing.
3 Phoebe & Cole “Charmed”
As a Charmed fan, I was really rooting for Cole and Phoebe as certain points of the show.
That being said, according to thetalko.com, the relationship between Phoebe Halliwell, played by Alyssa Milano, and Cole Turner, played by Julian McMahon, was one of deception and manipulation from the beginning.
Their whole relationship, Cole, who was a bad demon, would use Phoebe, who was a good witch, to get what he wanted.
There were times though his good side would come out and he would protect her from harm. In the end, he becomes obsessed with her before meeting his end. Phoebe had always been an optimistic girl and wanted to believe that he could change, we all did, but he never did and wound up almost sucking the life out of her.
2 Piper & Alex “Orange Is The New Black”
This couple has chemistry, it is obvious, but they really should just end it and move on.
According to thetalko.com, Piper Chapman, played by Taylor Schilling, and Alex Vause, played by Laura Prepon, are one couple that is constantly butting heads, betraying one another, constantly lashing out at each other, and just have no trust for the other.
In this case, both have unhealthy lives and personalities. The saying “two wrongs don't make it right” fits these two perfectly.
1 Britta And Troy “Community”
Britta, portrayed by Gillian Jacobs, and Troy, portrayed by Donald Glover, are two people whose relationship seems to be forced.
Britta and Troy have no chemistry together what-so-ever and rarely ever are on the same page.
Britta is known to be so insecure that she is in constant want of validation from those around her and Troy is so inattentive that he does not notice her needs to provide that for her. It seems like she is the only one to give 110% in the relationship, while Troy is just uninterested in trying at all.
