20 Pairs Of On-Screen Siblings Who Dated In Real Life
The beginning of a relationship can start anywhere, especially in Hollywood. Actors spend a lot of their time on sets and put in a lot of hours to entertain us. They are so skilled in what they do that they make it all seem real. Many people get caught up in the moment that is created by these actors and we start to see these actors on screen as real people. The association of on-screen characters sometimes can't be separated from real life. On-screen families have become real to us and we associate them with being an actual family. Do these on-screen families have relationships other than the illusion that is created on-screen?
The answer to that question is yes. Co-stars spend so much time around each other that some kind of a relationship between them is inevitable. Co-stars have formed relationships outside of the camera, and many of those relationships occur between actors who are portrayed as on-screen siblings. Love is in the air on many sets, which makes you wonder who is dating who. Which actors and actresses have found love thanks to their fictional sibling relationships? We'll take a look at the phenomenon here, from celebs whose relationships were shortlived to those who are still going strong.
20 Kirstie Alley & Parker Stevenson
The spark between actress Kirstie Alley and actor Parker Stevenson actually struck before they were portrayed as brother and sister on television. The couple was married for three years prior to becoming siblings Billy Hazard and Virginia Hazard on the miniseries North and South: Book II.
The magic of on-screen chemistry got ahold of Kirstie Alley, and then the real-life marriage of Parker Stevenson and Alley began to take a turn.
Alley was attracted to co-star Patrick Swayze while still being married to Stevenson on the set of the miniseries. Nothing concrete became of that relationship, but Stevenson and Alley ended their marriage in 1997.
19 Maggie Grace & Ian Somerhalder
Maggie Grace and Ian Somerhalder played the role of step-siblings Shannon and Boone on the television drama Lost portraying the roles of snobbish rich siblings. While the show saw success during the middle part of the shows run, Maggie and Ian took their relationship off screen and began to date each other.
Today, Ian and Maggie are still friends as Maggie explained to US Magazine: "I haven't dated too many actors. I did when I was really young, for a couple of years, but it's nothing against actors. Ian Somerhalder and I are still very good friends. You can certainly reconcile schedules with actors but it takes some doing, and I just don't have that energy."
18 Emily VanCamp & Chris Pratt
Before Chris Pratt's career skyrocketed, he played the role of Bright Abbot alongside co-star Emily VanCamp, who played Emily Abbot in the CW series Everwood. The on-screen siblings were in a relationship from 2004-2007.
According to Popsugar, Pratt told of his experience and what it was like dating his "sister."
He said, "Yeah, we've pretty much gotten used to the response of, 'Ew, that's weird. That's creepy.' The people who know us are happy, and probably expected it to happen eventually. But yeah, every once in a while we get that one person that's like, 'That's really creepy. You just kissed your sister.'"
17 Katherine Heigl & Jason Behr
Imagine what it would be like to date someone that you worked with, only to break up and still continue to work with them? Before playing Dr. Stevens in Grey's Anatomy, Katherine Heigl played alongside Jason Behr on the television series Roswell during the early stages of her career.
They played an alien brother and sister on the series. By the end of season two of the show, Jason and Katherine began dating each other- back in 1999. Their relationship may have only lasted for two years, but they continued to work together on Roswell until the show ended in 2002.
16 Evan Rachel Wood & Shane West
Sometimes performers cannot see the connection between their co-stars until it is revealed to the public. A celeb relationship cannot elude the public eye forever, and the 'eye' soon discovered that on-screen siblings Evan Rachel Wood and Shane West were romantically involved when they were spotted together on a date in 2009.
No one on the set of Once and Again knew about their relationship until it was revealed in public.
They were an item during this time and were caught giving displays of affection in various public places. But their relationship did not last long, ending the same year it began.
15 Nikki Reed & Robert Pattinson
The denial route after a break up would probably work if someone was not in the public eye all of the time. Such was not the case with actress Nikki Reed and actor Robert Pattinson.
Their off-screen relationship was a short one, and as Nikki Reed explained to E Online, they were never really a "couple": "I can't win, A few weeks ago I was at this event, and they said, 'You missed Rob's birthday, how do you feel?' And I said, 'I called him, it's fine.' And they wrote, 'She's clearly bitter over the breakup.' I'm like, what breakup? Rob and I were never together."
14 Drew Barrymore & David Arquette
It's great to have a good word about someone that you once dated years ago. Drew Barrymore and David Arquette were siblings in the romantic comedy film Never Been Kissed.
They developed a relationship while playing on-screen siblings and dated through the late 90s.
Arquette had nothing but good to say about Barrymore according to Daily Mail:: "[Drew and I] used to date when we were very young kids. Well, not little kids! She's just one of the sweetest, kindest people in Hollywood, She always has been, and she always will be. She's just a lovely, sweet person. We used to run around and just be silly."
13 Blake Lively & Penn Badgley
The relationship between Blake Lively and Penn Badgley evolved into something more than a relationship from the viewpoint of the television drama Gossip Girl.
Blake explained to Elle what it was really about: "I remember there was one point where we were just afraid of how our personal lives overlapping our work life could be perceived by our bosses. [But then] we were like, 'Oh no, that's exactly what they want.' They wanted us all to date. They wanted us all to wear the same clothes that we're wearing on the show. They wanted that because then it fed their whole narrative. People could buy into this world."
12 Amy Poehler & Will Arnett
A husband and wife team fit for the silver screen, Amy Poehler and Will Arnett were married in 2003. They appeared as siblings Fairchild and Stranz Van Waldenberg in the ice-skating comedy film Blades of Glory in 2007.
Ironically, their characters have a scene in which they kiss in the film.
Due to the silly nature of the film, they could get away with this, and being married came in handy! Will and Amy remained a married couple until 2012 when they separated. Arnett went on to file for a divorce in 2014, and the dissolution was finalized in 2016.
11 Jamie-Lynn Sigler & Robert Iler
Here is yet another one of those relationships that just happened to spring up in public- this one between actors Jamie-Lynn Sigler and Robert Iler. Jamie-Lynn and Robert were known for their brother-and-sister feuds on The Sopranos.
Their feuding did not spill off the set, but instead, they were caught by fans cuddling and whispering sweet nothings at a Las Vegas Night Club in 2007. They were there to celebrate the final season of The Sopranos and they decided to let their display of affections be seen in public. The relationship didn't last, though, and fizzled out sometime after The Sopranos ended.
10 Hayden Panettiere & Milo Ventimiglia
An actor or actress may say that dating is not the best thing to do when you have to work with the person that you are dating. If a relationship is going through tough times and your partner is your co-worker, those relationships could spill onto the set.
Hayden Panettiere and Milo Ventimiglia played siblings in Heroes, but they were dating off camera.
Milo only became stronger after the relationship as he revealed to People, saying “There are things that happen to you in your life that shape who you are. Everything I've been through from jobs to friendships to partnerships, everything has built me into who I am.”
9 Jamie Campbell Bower & Lily Collins
If the first time you don't succeed, then try again… For these two, it wound up being over and over again. There are ups and downs in a relationship, as on-screen brother and sister Jamie Campbell Bower and Lily Collins found when they played siblings in the 2014 film The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.
Jamie and Lily were in a continually on and off relationship for two years. They finally called it a day on their relationship in 2015. They got back together again, but they would split for what appeared to be the final time in 2018. Also in the same year, both Jamie and Lily have been communicating through Instagram, so the planets may yet realign again.
8 Susan Dey & David Cassidy
There came a point in time when actress Susan Dey had a crush on her co-star David Cassidy. Susan and David played sister and brother in the 70's on the set of The Partridge Family. In the era of peace and love, The Partridge Family was an iconic part of this generation.
But Susan Dey could not hide the crush that she had on her fictional brother.
David secretly had feelings for Susan as well and attempted to make her jealous by bringing his girlfriends onto the set. The relationship did not last long as David reportedly did not feel a connection with Susan.
7 Lauren Graham & Peter Krause
A missed connection occurred between actress Lauren Graham and actor Peter Krause. They got to know each other while working on the sitcom Caroline in the City. They had a brief romantic relationship during their time on the sitcom, and afterwards, they spent some time away from each other.
They actually spent a good fifteen years away from each other before they met up again in 2010. They were featured as brother and sister in 2010 on the television series Parenthood. At that time, they rekindled their relationship once again. Later that same year, they actually got married!
6 Emily VanCamp & Dave Annable
All is not lovely behind the scenes at times when you are working with your significant other on the set of a television series. It would appear that Emily VanCamp has it all down pat when it comes to finding love on the set, though.
This time, she appears as the sister opposite actor Dave Annable on the coincidentally labeled series Brothers & Sisters.
They say the second time around is better, and it was at first. Their relationship was on fire until it caused production issues on the set of Brothers & Sisters. When Emily decided to leave the show, she left on amicable terms and wished David the best.
5 Jennifer Grey & Matthew Broderick
Things were going well for Jennifer Grey's life in the 80s and her then-boyfriend Matthew Broderick. They played the role of siblings in the film Ferris Bueller's Day Off. They were a pair until 1987 when a car crash involving them affected Grey's life. Broderick and Grey were the only survivors of the accident.
Jennifer told SF Gate: “I became America's sweetheart within five days of the accident. The juxtaposition of that deep sorrow, the survivor's guilt, and then being celebrated as the new big thing just didn't jibe. It didn't feel good to be the toast of the town.”
4 Carrie Fisher & Mark Hamill
Does anyone remember the weird kissing scene between Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker on The Empire Strikes Back? There was more than meets the eye with this scene. The scene made some people feel uncomfortable due to the family ties.
But the scenario almost sparked a relationship between Princess Leia, played by the late Carrie Fisher, and Luke Skywalker, played by Mark Hamill.
Mark Hamill voiced his thoughts on the relationship, according to Independent, and stated: “Carrie and I were attracted to one another, but I knew from previous jobs that it would have been a bad idea [to get involved with someone on set]."
3 Jennifer Carpenter & Michael C. Hall
A divorce does not have to mean the end of love. Jennifer Carpenter and Michael C. Hall were siblings on the Showtime television series Dexter. Their working relationship turned into a dating relationship. They were so involved with each other that they were married during their time on Dexter. Unfortunately, they divorced shortly afterward, but fortunately for fans, continued to work on the set of Dexter.
US Magazine interviewed an emotional Jennifer Carpenter about her relationship with Hall: "Our marriage didn't look like anyone else's, and our divorce didn't either, so… I said it before, just because the marriage ended doesn't mean the love did."
2 Shannen Doherty & Jason Priestley
In the 90s, zip code 90210 became the most noticeable zip code due in part to the television series Beverly Hills 90210. Shannen Doherty and Jason Priestley played the roles of Brenda and Brandon Walsh, respectively. The two became a couple as a result of being on the series.
Doherty and Priestley attended the 1991 Emmy's and while they were on the red carpet they were photographed kissing.
Jason Priestly told Popsugar that the relationship did not interfere with work: "nobody ever got attached. We never let it get in the way what we were doing. I will let you know that nobody ever got - work always superseded everything."
1 Selena Gomez & David Henrie
Selena Gomez needed a rebound after her break up with Justin Bieber. Due to her multi-talented nature, she was able to find love in the land of Disney thanks to her acting skills.
While working with co-star David Henrie on the Disney series Wizards of Waverly Place, a love interest developed between the two. The pair went out on a date after Wizards of Waverly Place ended. Their relationship was then made public, but it did not last very long. Selena Gomez experienced two breakups within the same year, but at least she and David Henrie are still on good terms as friends.
