20 Diva Demands From JLo That Show She's No Jenny From The Block
"Don't be fooled by the rocks, I'm still (I'm still)… " You know the lyrics. Once upon a time, Jennifer Lopez was indeed "Jenny From The Block." Along came $360 million, a big slice of fame, and the inevitable "diva" spiral. At 49 years old, JLo is one of the longest-serving women in the music industry. Turns out, she's also one of the most demanding.
Here's something interesting. In 2017, JLo released "Dinero" (now that she's pally with Cardi B and DJ Khaled). You probably don't need us to tell you that "Dinero" translates to "Money." The word forms the hook of the song ("yo quiero dinero"), and yes, that translates as "I want money."
Cardi throws out an interesting reminder in "Dinero." Since both women are from NYC, Cardi states: "Two bad [… ] that came from the Bronx, Cardi from the pole and Jenny from the block." Except that era has long faded. Particularly when you learn that when JLo has refused to film in the Bronx.
"Meltdowns" over her backstage demands. Candle-filled hotel suites. A flat-out refusal to walk short distances (and a need for 7 limousines to escort her). JLo's list of diva demands almost tops those of the industry's biggest diva, Mariah Carey. We still love her, but there's a limit. Here are 21 diva demands from Jennifer Lopez that prove she's no Jenny From The Block.
20 "Loses Her Mind" If Hotels Lack Lime Blossom Or Grapefruit-Scented Candles
"The diva has landed" is how The Daily Mail titled its article on the very specific (and very extensive) list of hotel room demands that JLo comes with. The 5-star Dorchester Hotel in London welcomed Ms. Lopez in 2007.
"So you tryna buy what's already yours? What I need from you is not available in stores." Oddly, JLO's own candle range isn't stocked by online retailers anymore.
"Grapefruit and Lime Blossom candles by Jo Malone"- you're looking at around $500 a pop. The American Idol judge and singer reportedly "loses her mind" if the upscale fruit-scented candles aren't awaiting her in the hotel suite.
19 "Meltdowns" If Sunflower Seeds Lack Shells
To be fair, the list of hotel room demands posted by The Daily Mail does include the word "please." The "meltdowns" over the sunflower seeds are less easy-going.
"David's or Planters sunflower seeds (with shells)," the list reads. Twelve bottles of water, honeydew melon, and soft-baked chocolate chip cookies are also on the list.
Alongside veggie platters with ranch, sour cream (and regular) potato chips, Dentyne spearmint gum, spicy brown mustard, and every type of Coca-Cola there is, JLo requires ketchup, butter, jelly, salt, pepper, sugar, celery, Ritz crackers, plus orange Gatorade. We won't start on the coffee list.
18 Seven Limousines To Travel Three Blocks
Unfortunately, a total reality in the celeb world. Kylie Jenner has been "driven" 50 to 100 metres during The Mirror's coverage of her 2015 tantrum on The Ellen Show - the VIP restroom was, apparently, not "VIP enough" for Kylie. In 2003, Jen requested 7 limousines to walk three blocks.
Jenny From The Block can't walk three blocks. "I am 100% convinced that working out is part of what makes me so happy," Jen has said.
Hello! reported that Jen was staying at The Metropolitan. While The Dorchester restaurant (her lunch destination) was 200 yards away, Jen enlisted a "convoy of seven limousines to escort her."
17 Hotel Maid Requests An Autograph, "Gets Fired On The Spot"
There's an irony to this one. In 2002, Jen starred in Maid In Manhattan - a movie about a hotel room cleaner trying to make ends meet. While JLo's upbringing saw her sharing a mattress with her sisters, $360 million to her name now permits Ms. Lopez to stay in the fanciest suite there is.
In 2012, Jen traveled to Germany. Pray Dodaj is the hotel worker who politely asked JLo's assistant for an autograph. "A day later, the cleaning company that employed me at the hotel called and said Ms. Lopez had complained. I was fired right there on the phone," The Daily Mail reports. The hotel has denied the accusation.
16 Diamond-Encrusted Headphones To "Keep Down Noise" (On Her Speedboat)
A tiny part of us finds this so #Extra, it's almost awesome. Except it's kind of not. Jennifer Lopez is a woman who vacations in style. While Leonardo DiCaprio prefers to rent out $600 million mega-yachts to watch the soccer World Cup, Jen prefers a more intimate setting.
Jen's custom speedboat ferried Jen from Cannes to Monaco for the World Music Awards. The Mirror reported the vessel to come complete with customized love seats, faux leather, and champagne coolers. Keep the noise down, though. Jen required a pair of $5,800 diamond-encrusted headphones to "drown out the noise."
15 Ghosts Flight Attendants (On Her Private Jet)
Much like Kim Kardashian, Mariah Carey, Kylie Jenner, and DJ Khaled, JLo travels by private jet. Jen came under fire in 2012, when Star magazine reported that she was ghosting her own flight attendants.
"I just said: What can I get you to drink?" a flight attendant told the magazine. Jen "turned her head away" before telling her personal assistant, "Please tell him I'd like a Diet Coke and lime." The attendant continued to say that Jen "wouldn't even look at [them]. It was sad, she seems so sweet in her movies."
There's a warm side to JLo, but "she only talks through her assistants" is the reality reported by Star.
14 Want Me As An American Idol Judge? That'll Be $20 Million
That's per season. A music icon she may be, but it turns out that the pay for sitting in a chair and judging people isn't all that bad (when you're JLo). In 2011, JLo was paid approximately $12 million to replace Simon Cowell on American Idol.
Time reports that JLo's American Idol salaries have ranged from $12 to $20 million. While Jen's presence has been credited for "rejuvenating" the show, the price tag remains eye-watering. Oddly, Jen has said,
"I judge people on how they smell."
At least she doesn't judge them on how they look (which she has also said).
13 Want Me To Sing At Your Wedding? That'll Be $5 Million
Appearance fees in the celebrity world are something else. In 2012, Rihanna was paid a reported $8 million to turn on the Christmas lights in the London Westfield Mall. Capital Xtra reports lower fees of around $648,000 for stars like Adele and Drake, although the minimum for Nicki Minaj is $250,000.
It's $5 million for a wedding appearance. Event or club appearances will cost you $1.2 million.
Elle reports that a Russian oil and coal magnate paid Jen $5 million in 2016 to sing at his wedding. For a Turkmenistan official wanting a birthday party appearance, the fee was between $1 million and $1.5 million.
12 A-Rod "Banned From Speaking To Women Under 40"
JLo and A-Rod are now inseparable. They started dating in March 2017, although the media is already begging for an answer on whether or not these two will tie the knot. With three failed marriages behind her, it's understandable that Jen might not want to start running down the aisle again.
Dating Jen comes with its demands, though. In Touch Weekly reports that Jen will "only consider marrying A-Rod" if he doesn't speak to women under the age of 40. Jen is 49 and fabulous, but we're sensing a touch of the controlling, here. Quite how you're supposed to stick to this rule realistically, we don't know.
11 Construction Workers Banned From "Making Eye Contact"
When it's that random creepy guy at Starbucks - seriously, when will he stop staring? Fair enough. When you're hiring workers to do refurbish your mansion though, eye contact isn't exactly invasive.
In 2012, JLo had her San Fernando Valley mansion renovated. Workers sweltered in the heat (not Jen's fault), although Hello! reports that "none of the helpers, drivers, or contractors were permitted to speak to her."
JLo's property portfolio is less "from the block" and more "owning all the blocks." In 2017, JLo listed her Manhattan penthouse for $27 million. The same year, Jen purchased a $40 million Bel Air mansion.
10 Dual Oscillating Fans In Her 80-Degree Rooms
Celebrities seem to have a bit of thing with fans. You'd think they were staying in caves. Amazingly, while their suites come fully air-conditioned, the comfort of a cool room doesn't quite seem to do it. Lady Gaga requires 3 fans with her cool-mist humidifiers. Beyonce's rooms must be at 72 degrees. When Jen stayed at The Metropolitan Hotel in London in 2012, the staff was "baffled" by her extravagant demands.
JLo joins the celebs with their lists of specific room temperatures.
The Daily Mail reports that "dual-oscillating fans" and a specific 80-degree temperature setting were demanded by Jen. This, from the woman who posts sweat-dripping selfies with The Rock.
9 Mirrors At Specific Angles
Something about becoming an A-lister seems to change a girl. Kim Kardashian? "Kim has people move objects or plants if they're in the way or a mirror," IB Times reported. While one side of JLo is the gruelling workout queen who will happily lose herself in the music on stage, there's another side to her.
The Smoking Gun publishes celeb rider demands in black and white. In 2010, Jen's list specified dressing rooms with mirrors - hanging mirrors for her makeup had to be at "specific angles." "You mirror what the world mirrors to you," remains one of Jen's most famous quotes. Quite what that means in this context, we don't know.
8 From The Woman Who Says "Beauty Is Skin Deep"
Cue the diva with 20,000 makeup brushes in her dressing room (but those "inspiring" quotes that totally keep it real). "Beauty is skin deep," Jen has said. "I think what's really important is finding a balance of mind, body and spirit." This, from the woman who "loses her mind" when hotel suites don't have $500 grapefruit-scented candles. "I have the stardom glow." Yup, another one of JLo's quotes. When it comes to diva accusations, though, Jen has her replies.
"It's a shame to call somebody a 'diva' simply because they work harder than everybody else."
Tell that to the hotel maid who claimed that she was fired for requesting an autograph.
7 Pens "Jenny From The Block," Refuses To Shoot Video In The Bronx
Pulling yourself out of poverty is no laughing matter. "I shared a bed with my two sisters," Jen told E! News about her humble Bronx upbringings. Despite the Hollywood homes and multi-millions, Jen maintains an apparent strong bond to her roots. Except when it comes to shooting there.
Jen only agreed to be in a vehicle if she "didn't actually have to go to the Bronx."
In 2011, JLo fronted a Fiat vehicle commercial. The shoot aimed to tap into Jen's Bronx background, but the entire shoot had to be filmed in Los Angeles. E! reported that a body double was used for the Bronx filming.
6 Suite Breakfasts Must Be Hot "Regardless Of Time, Though
Breakfast in bed is 100% what we would do in a hotel situation. Ordering piping hot scrambled eggs and fresh coffee is #Indulgence, but something about JLo's demands turns that into #Diva.
JLo's breakfast-in-bed requirements include scrambled eggs, bacon, pancakes, white toast, potatoes, and a very specific instruction.
The food must be hot "regardless of when she arrives."
Hello! reports that regular and decaf coffee must also be provided. For her 2010 tour, Jen's beverage list also included room-temperature Evian, Snapple (raspberry, lemon, and iced tea flavors), Nantucket's Fruit Punch, 4 flavors of Kerns, and absolutely no tomato, apple, or grape juices.
5 Shuts Down Entire Boutiques So She Can Shop
It isn't a boutique until it's your boutique, right? In 2016, JLo was busy cashing her $5 million paycheque for serenading a Russian billionaire's son at his nuptials. Making the most of her Moscow stay, Jen hit the shops.
Moscow's designer Aizel boutique was forced to shut down for 2 hours to allow Jen to browse the store. Jen was papped picking out shoes, handbags, and Charlotte Olympia items. It was a repeat performance in 2017, when Jen and A-Rod hit Rodeo Drive's Brunello Cucinelli boutique. Jen wore Gucci while shopping. The mob of fans was closed off by the store's glass panels.
4 Gym Bag Costs $18,500
There's no denying that this woman is a #WorkoutQueen. At 49, Jen is squashing celebs half her age with rock-hard abs, a solid gym ethic, and a whole ton of quotes on the gruel. "Dance has always been a huge part of my life," Jen told Hello! about the workout regime that she "100%" credits her happiness with.
Here is Jen in "workout mode." The Hermès bag she is holding retails for $18,500.
In May 2018, MSN wrote an entire article on Jen's arm candy - no, not A-Rod. While the wardrobe was #Athletisurewear, the neon yellow Hermès Kelly was #KylieJenner.
3 Room Temperature And Refrigerated Gatorade, Plain M&Ms Only, Apple Pie "À -La-Mode"
Are you ready for it? Jen's 2010 tour requirements came locked and loaded, and the beverage list is anything but basic. Alongside all-white rooms (couches, drapes, tables, candles, and tablecloths), Jen requests "no catering in the actual dressing room, except beverages - everything else outside." Jen also requires apple pie "à-la-mode."
Gatorade must be room temperature and refrigerated. The setup also requires regular Coke, Diet Coke, caffeine-free Coke, lemon wedges, Smartwater, fruit punch, plus a very specific request of plain M&MS (or she'll "freak out").
2 Will Only Marry A-Rod If He "Doesn't Let Himself Go"
You want to date Jennifer Lopez? You comply with her demands. As JLo and A-Rod get closer (and those Bar Pitti lunch dates turn cozier), everyone is wondering whether this guy has proposed, if he will, and what Jen's answer would be if he did.
TMZ reports that Jen "loves his physique." Fair enough, we've all had our body moments when it comes to guys. The media outlet also reports that Jen wants a "guarantee" that Alex won't "let himself go" if they get married. Neither have confirmed the claim. Jen maintains that you "shouldn't judge people on appearances." Pot calling the kettle black?
1 "I'm Not A Diva"
Private jets, seven limousines to cross three blocks, diamond-encrusted headphones on her custom-made speedboat, and a minimum $1.2 million to show her face. Nevertheless, JLo maintains that she's "not a diva."
"I got the moniker of being a 'diva,' which I never felt I deserved - which I don't deserve," Jen said. "Because I've always been a hard worker, on time, doing what I'm supposed to do." Weirdly, those of us who've ever waitressed, worked in a bowling alley, or stacked shelves - we also work hard and turn up on time. Presumably, time to re-evaluate our pay. $1.2 million to show up to work.
