15 Sultriest TV Villains (Who Were Supposed To Be Ugly)
The way we watch TV has dramatically changed over the past couple of years with the addition of streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. They've made TV more accessible than it ever has been. Sure, we're now able to record shows on our DVRs these days, but with these particular streaming services, we don't have to take the time to remember to actually record our favorite programs. Thanks to these services, we're able to binge watch our favorite shows and pay closer attention to them than we ever had before.
And yes, this means paying closer attention to some of our favorite characters.
Of course, you have your society approved, bonafide gorgeous people (actually, CHARACTERS) of television: your a-typical beauties with perfect, symmetrical features that seem to light up the set whenever they appear on the screen. They're the ones most people WISHED they resembled in the real world. The ones we wish to be. But what about the underrated ones? The ones who were actually supposed to be hideous looking, but instead, managed to grow on us with their all-too-brutal charisma and magically became, HARK! Beautiful. And yes, they all happen to be the quote-unquote bad guy.
All 15 of these characters were written as “ugly” but if you look at them in real life, they happen to stunningly hot in their own, dynamic ways, and it happened to trickle onto the small screen.
15 Tatiana Maslany (Helena, Orphan Black)
If you happened to start watching BBC's critically acclaimed series Orphan Black right in the middle of the first season, you would be extremely confused. The show starts the brilliant Tatiana Maslany, who plays a slew of multiple characters who are all connected because they happen to be clones. When Helena first comes onto the screen, one would assume she's a downright angry, and frightening psycho. But as viewers start to learn more about her history, she quickly grows on you despite her odd quirks. Maslany is almost unrecognizable as Helena, with her brittle, frizzy blonde hair, and dead-tired eyes. She's a far cry from the other clones that Maslany portrays, at least looks wise. Oh, and if you haven't watched this series yet, you're seriously missing out on Maslany's extraordinary talent.
14 Jon Hamm (The Reverend, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt)
Sure, we're used to seeing actor Jon Hamm as the dashing and debonair lead in AMC's award-winning series Mad Men. Whenever we see his beautiful face, we seem to forget how versatile he is as an actor. And he highlights that 10-fold when he portrays the hilarious villain Richard Wayne Gary Wayne (or, The Reverend) in Netflix's comedy series the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. The Reverend was responsible for kidnapping and keeping the title character Kimmy Schmidt, along with three other women, for 15 years in a bunker since he believes it's the end of the world. And while that sounds rather bleak, the hilarious events that occurred in the bunker (and later on when he's arrested) are what keep the laughs coming despite the dark concept.
13 Faye Marsay (The Waif, Game of Thrones)
If you aren't obsessed with HBO's hit drama Game of Thrones, people will think there's something wrong with you. For six seasons, the show has captivated audiences all over the world and will continue to stun us in their final season. In season five, we were introduced to a girl only known as The Waif, played by the iridescent Faye Marsay. The Waif was meant to be the nemesis to Arya Stark when she joined forces with the Faceless Men in the House of Black and White. The Waif beat on Arya in order to “teach” her, but she was only doing that because she was told to. She actually hated Arya and wanted her dead from the start. Well, we all know who won that battle at the very end. Even though she fought like a mini Terminator, Marsay's chilling beauty took her character to an entirely different level.
12 Jeffery Dean Morgan (Negan, The Walking Dead)
Most of us in this world remember Jeffery Dean Morgan as our beloved (and doomed) Denny Duquette Jr. of Grey's Anatomy fame. But a couple years ago, the actor did a major about-face when he took on the role of Negan on AMC's Walking Dead. Sure, he was a survivor in the zombie series, but he turned out to a complete and utter sociopath who personally offed a major and much-loved character on the show as a “punishment”. He acts more like a cult leader rather than a person looking to survive the end of the world. He is a man without any sort of guilt or even relatable emotion, which makes him stunningly dangerous in the long run. On paper, he's as ugly as they get because of his sociopath-like personality. But in real life, Morgan is as far from ugly as it gets.
11 Hannah Waddingham (Septa Unella, Game of Thrones)
When we first met Septa Unella (the spicey Hannah Waddingham) in season five of Game of Thrones, she barely said a single word. Instead, she tortured Margaery Tyrell (No!) and then Cersei Lannister (Yes!) as she did the bidding of the High Sparrow, attempting to get them to confess their “sins” by way of harsh punishments. Cersei, in her own way, attempted to threaten the Septa the best way she knew how, but the cold woman just wouldn't crack. Her coldness could be felt through the small screen and audiences marveled at her. She seemed to be unusually more cruel to Cersei rather than Margaery, which ended up being her undoing in the end because as we all know, no one crosses Cersei and gets away with it.
10 Mads Mikkelsen (Dr. Hannibal Lecter, Hannibal)
In The Silence of the Lambs, Dr. Hannibal Lecter (played by Anthony Hopkins) was really MEANT to be seen as an attractive figure, even though he oozed with class. There was still something about him. Now, in the NBC series Hannibal, it was a completely new ballgame when Mads Mikkelsen stepped into the role. Sure, he wasn't seen as your typical brand of handsome but there was just SOMETHING about him and his chemistry with the characters around him. Like Hopkins in the role, Mikkelsen's chilling charm bounces off the screen and he becomes anything BUT ugly in the role. Oh sure, you still wouldn't want to go near the character even heavily armed with a machine gun, but you can't help but get sucked into his world and his beautiful eyes.
9 Giancarlo Espositio (Gus Fring, Breaking Bad)
The OFFICAL bad guy in AMC's ground shattering series Breaking Bad was protagonist turned antagonist Walter White (Bryan Cranston), but he ended up meeting his match when the dangerously still Gus Fring (Giancarlo Espositio) stepped onto the screen. Fring was brutal with his calm, patient demeanor, but when he was angered, he was a man you wanted to stay miles away from. Fring was a pillar of his community and hid his life as a kingpin well from the prying eyes of the DEA by maintaining a positive exterior to those around him. Sure, he wasn't conventionally “good looking” to be exact, but there was a certain dynamic that came with his stillness, and when you would see Espositio's childlike smile and laugh on the red carpet, you couldn't help but fall in love.
8 Lorraine Toussaint (Vee, Orange is the New Black)
Let's face it: if you are an avid fan of the Netflix series Orange is the New Black, you have characters that you absolutely adore (Crazy Eyes, Taystee) and you have ones you can't really stand (*cough, cough* Piper *cough*). But then you have the ones that are universally hated, like the famous Vee (Lorraine Toussaint), who joined the inmates of Litchfield Penitentiary in Season Two. She immediately began trying to take over the prison and even went as far as to manipulate Suzanne (Crazy Eyes, played by Uzo Aduba) and Taystee (Danielle Brooks), who was her adoptive daughter. She was pure evil to the very core and Toussaint played her with undeniable charisma mixed with nefarious intentions. While Vee was supposed to be unattractive on the show, Toussaint herself is a freaking knockout, as you can see.
7 Iwan Rheon (Ramsay Bolton, Game of Thrones)
I know, I know - Ramsay Bolton of Game of Thrones fame was a raging psychopath who made Joffery Baratheon look like a meek little kindergartner by comparison. Bolton, played by Iwan Rheon, bestowed a reign of terror upon House Stark after taking it over in the name of the Boltons, and even forced Sansa Stark into marriage. He was a corrupt, insane ruler who relished in the torture and death of others in the name of evil. Eventually, he gets what's coming to him when he faces off against Jon Snow and his fate is left in the hands of his very abused wife, Sansa. But, as evil as Bolton is, actor Rheon is a far cry from the demonic character he portrayed, and is, well, actually pretty dang hot in real life.
6 Alycia Debnam-Carey (Lexa, The 100)
The CW series The 100 is a post-apocalyptic drama based off of the book by the same name. The show revolves around a group of survivors who managed build a colony of sorts 97-years after a nuclear holocaust took out most of life on Earth. Those on earth who attempted to build a new colony and escaped to a station in Earth's orbit appropriately called “The Ark” and after some are sent down to see if the Earth's surface was habitable, they discover that not all humankind was wiped out and the survivors are called “Grounder clans”. Lexa (Alycia Debnam-Carey) happens to be a warrior is a commander in the Grounders. Lexa was actually considered a strong, LGBT character who was killed off, much the dismay of the LGBT community.
5 Rory McCann (The Hound, Game of Thrones)
And yet ANOTHER character who was supposed to be considered a “villain” of sorts. The Hound (also known as Sandor Clegane) was the personal bodyguard of Joffrey Baratheon after the young evil tart took the throne. He, however, hated his post and abandoned it during the Battle of the Blackwater. He eventually took Arya Stark as a “prisoner” of sorts, hoping to deliver her to her aunt for a handsome ransom, but the two ended up becoming allies of sorts. The Hound's face was disfigured after his older brother, Ser Gregor Clegane, burned his face for taking a toy of his when they were both kids. In real life, however, actor Rory McCann is devastatingly hot AF and looks NOTHING like Sandor Clegane, thankfully. That being said, we will still always have a soft spot in our hearts for the Hound himself.
4 Matthew Modine (Dr. Martin Brenner, Stranger Things)
We knew that Dr. Martin “Papa” Brenner (Matthew Modine) was bad news from the very first episode of Netflix hit series, Stranger Things. The evil doctor actually raised Eleven (Millie Bobby-Brown) in a laboratory and used her telekinetic abilities to his advantage, eventually unleashing a Demogorgon from another dimension into the small town of Hawkins. Brenner had a strong, Freudian-laced hold on Eleven, who commonly referred to him as “Papa” because he wanted to have a father-figure like outlook in her eyes while he performed horrible experiments on her. However, in real life, actor Matthew Modine is nothing short of a silver fox. Sure, we're not able to see that in his character on Things, but we're able to see it when he walks the red carpet.
3 Jason Isaacs (Dr. Hap, The OA)
The Netflix original series The OA seemed to fly under the radar last year, despite its intriguing premise: the series follows an adopted woman named Prairie Johnson (Brit Marling) who resurfaces after her parents assume she's dead for seven years. Thing is, before she mysteriously disappeared, Prairie was fully blind, but after she appears, she could suddenly see. Jason Isaacs plays Dr. Hap, the man who was responsible for her mysterious disappearance and held her hostage for years along with a couple other teens around her age. The thing that links all the kids together was the fact that they all had near-death experiences and survived. Hap is attempting to prove that there is an afterlife by “killing” the kids and bringing them back to life. Sure, Isaacs doesn't look as creepy as he did when he was in Harry Potter, but he's still dangerous, despite his geeky appeal.
2 Lily Rabe (Sister Mary Eunice, American Horror Story: Coven)
Don't let her baby blue eyes and innocent appearance fool you, Sister Mary Eunice (Lily Rabe) was downright evil in American Horror Story: Asylum. Sure, in the beginning, her nun character was sweet, but after the devil got his hands on her, she turned into a sadistic demon of sorts who slyly starts taunting characters in order to kill them off. In real life, actress Lily Rabe can't turn her eyes demonic red before going on killing sprees, she is, in fact, as innocent and beautiful as she appears to be in long BEFORE her character on the show is possessed. Of course, good must prevail over evil and eventually, the Sister Mary Eunice is taken out at the end of the season. The character DOES make another appearance in American Horror Story: Freak Show, however.
1 Wagner Moura (Pablo Escobar, Narcos)
History tells us that drug cartel kingpin Pablo Escobar was a dangerous and powerful man. And the Pablo Escobar we see in Narcos proves that… to a point. The Netflix drama helps us see a different side of Escobar, thanks to the superb acting skills of Wagner Moura, who managed to turn himself into the spitting image of the cocaine kingpin (who was supposed to be feared, yet seemed to wear a lot of “my-kid-got-this-for-me-on-father's-day” sweaters throughout the series). But in real life, Moura is on an entirely different level of drool-worthy leading men/villains. Sure, we didn't see him stick around long enough to last until the third season (since we ALL know what eventually became of Escobar), but hopefully, we'll be able to see him grace the small screen (or the big screen) again in the future.
