15 On-Screen Couples Who Hated Each Other In Real Life
Ironically, some of the sexiest scenes on film are with two people who - off camera - can't stand each other. You'll be surprised who can make romance look enticing on-screen while wanting to vomit afterwards from having to deal with someone they loathe. And worse, sometimes one actor reeks of alcohol or has bad breath or stinks from body odor.
Of course it's kept a secret, at least until after the movie or show is out and long past its relevance. Who knew, for example, that those smokin' hot scenes in Dirty Dancing were done with two people who couldn't stand the sight of one another (Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Gray)?
That's the magic of gifted directors and really good actors/actresses.
It's ironic, though, that over the years, some on-screen romances have actually blossomed into real life relationships. And with the advent of social media and a sheer lack of loyalty among folks in Hollywood, liaisons (good or bad) make their way into being fodder for all those gossip sites, papers and magazines. Secret loathing of or longing for one's on-screen hook-ups is hard to keep out of the limelight these days.
Some of these will startle, while others will make you pick up a copy of the film or show to look again at the scenes you thought were genuinely hot.
15 Jamie Dornan And Dakota Johnson in 'Fifty Shades' - Not All That Hot
Fifty Shades of Grey, probably the most talked about movie of 2015, involved a lot of very sexy scenes between actor Jamie Dornan and actress Dakota Johnson (daughter of actor Don Johnson and actress Melanie Griffith). But word is from insiders that the two didn't really like each other in real life. Maybe it was a protective shield, as Dornan is married with a small child and Johnson was reportedly in a relationship at the time of filming. Most recently, she has been romantically linked to Chris Martin, the former husband to actress Gwyneth Paltrow. Although the Fifty Shades original made more than $166 million, the second instalment - Fifty Shads Darker - made a smaller $114 million at the box office. Funny thing, though, the only real awards the films picked up were negative, including a “Worst Film” from the Razzies. Dornan and Johnson received the “Worst Screen Combo.” Maybe those rumors about their lack of real love for each other are true.
14 'Castle' Queen Stana Katic Not Really Into Nathan Fillion
It was a slow roll across a few seasons, but Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) finally got together as a romantic couple on the ABC cop show Castle. But when they finally seemed to have settled in as a pair, the show was cancelled after eight seasons, and then the rumors began that Katic and Fillion actually “despised each other” in real life, according to US magazine. A source told the publication that the two wouldn't even speak to each other once the cameras were off. The source also told US that the feud got so out of hand that the show's producers made the two go to couples therapy. Ironically, in the series ending, the two characters end up living happily ever after. But from the stories from insiders, in real life, it's doubtful they're even sending each other birthday cards.
13 Romeo + Juliet Not! Claire Danes And Leonardo DiCaprio
When the latest version of Romeo + Juliet came out, it was a box office smash with its two young, rising actors (Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio) in the leads. Their chemistry on-screen drew critical acclaim and even an MTV Movie Award. But years after the classic love story came out to the praise of millennials especially, it was revealed that the two on screen lovebirds really didn't like each other in real life. Insiders that worked on the set told the media that the two didn't talk to each other except when the cameras were rolling. Reportedly, Danes went so far as to say that she thought DiCaprio was “very immature.” DiCaprio claimed she was “haughty and standoffish.” Fifteen years later, the opportunity came up for the two to work together again in “J. Edgar,” but Danes allegedly said “No thanks.”
12 'Vacancy' Stars Kate Beckinsale And Luke Wilson Would Have Wanted Separate Rooms
On camera in Vacancy, Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale were a couple in love, but when the cameras weren't rolling, he was reportedly a diva and playboy who she despised. According to reports, Wilson repeatedly showed up on the set late, and then he spent a lot of time bragging about the women he bagged away from the set and how loaded he had gotten. When the movie was in rehearsal, Wilson allegedly wouldn't partake, instead sending in a stand-in to read lines with Beckinsale. One day she got so sick of his “diva behavior,” she sent him a photo of herself with a note that said: “Read your lines to this - it will be better for both of us.” The movie only did about $19 million at the box office, which is pretty much less than it cost to make.
11 Jennifer Aniston And Jay Mohr Not So 'Picture Perfect'
When Jay Mohr got the part opposite American sweetheart Jennifer Aniston for the romantic comedy Picture Perfect, he was somewhat surprised since he had auditioned at the same time as Billy Baldwin and Matthew Broderick. Aniston was reportedly surprised as well, as she wanted Tate Donovan, her man in real life at the time. And according to insiders, Aniston made sure Mohr knew it on the set… in an interview after the movie came out, he said she was so mean to him that he would go to his mom's house after being on the set and cry. Awww. And everyone thought she was so sweet. Actually, Jen hit the top of a list recently that listed the movies' most boring lovers on-screen. Ouch! Let's just say love scenes aren't her thing.
10 Fake Love Affair Between Ryan Gosling And Rachel McAdams In 'The Notebook'
The Notebook is an iconic film that is still popular today with a bit of a cult following. It's a classic love story, with a young man who is poor, falling in love with a rich girl. Parents and events keep them apart and also bring them back together again, and in the end, well, we won't spoil it if you haven't seen it. There were a lot of tender and loving scenes in the film, and Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams played them well. They must be hellified actors, because in real life, they hated each other… at the time. At one point, Gosling even wanted her removed from the set. A huge yelling match ensued, and in the end, the film was completed. Ironically, after the movie was out and receiving mixed reviews, the two began dating and the relationship lasted two years. Go figure.
9 Not So 'Charmed' - Shannen Doherty And Jason Lee
Shannen Doherty came into the limelight in the much-talked-about 90210 when it first came out. It was a big hit for a while and some would argue it launched American TV's obsession with the rich and famous that carried into the launch of reality TV. Doherty seemed to gradually develop a reputation for being a diva… described by her co-stars as “difficult." And when she moved from TV to moviedom, the reputation seemed to be endorsed by Mallrats co-star Jason Lee, who added “rude” and “spoiled” to her description. Somehow, director Kevin Smith brought the two back together for a sequel, but Doherty's rep continued, this time endorsed by Charmed co-star Alyssa Milano. Last year, Doherty announced she was battling cancer. It started out as breast cancer but spread so she began treatment with chemotherapy. In October, it was reported that she has fully recovered and now is working again, now on the reboot of Heathers.
8 Reese Witherspoon And Vince Vaughn Won't Be On Holiday Together
When work began on Four Christmases, co-stars Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon were reportedly already not the best of friends. Nevertheless, the production went forward and it was all the crew could do to keep the two from killing each other. Apparently, Vaughn was laid back and ready to improvise, while Witherspoon refused to lighten up and be more willing to do things off the script. Moviefone even reported that Vaughn's BFF Jon Favreau was added to the flick to keep Vaughn away from sparring matches with Witherspoon. Then it came out that Witherspoon was refusing to do a love scene with Vaughn and was asking it to be cut out of the movie. Wrote Eric Davis of Moviefone: “I wouldn't blame Witherspoon for not wanting to get dirty between the sheets if her partner reeks of alcohol and refuses to go strictly by the script. Who knows what he would do once they were in bed together… for all we know, he could go crazy with the improv, whip out his Johnson and start wagging it around.” Oh snap!
7 'I Love Trouble' Co-Stars Julia Roberts And Nick Nolte Were Trouble
Julia Roberts has been a favorite of movie goers for decades, but she sure isn't a favorite of fellow thespian Nick Nolte. It all started on the set of I Love Trouble back in the mid-'90s and carried well into 2009 even. The joke around Hollywood is that their feud has lasted longer than most relationships. Their lack of chemistry on the set of I Love Trouble was so intense that it was reported that some of their scenes had to be shot separately. Once the movie was a wrap, Roberts came out to say that Nolte was “completely disgusting," while Nolte has said of Roberts: “She's not a nice person… everyone knows that.” Roberts isn't reportedly the easiest to work with, but there may be someone more of a diva, and that's Nicole Kidman. On the set of Secret in Their Eyes, Roberts allegedly nicknamed Kidman “her majesty.” Meow!
6 Selma Blair Vs. Charlie Sheen: Guess Who Won?
Charlie Sheen had a huge hit with Two and a Half Men, where he played a womanizer who was also a frequent drunk. It seemed Sheen became the character on TV in real life, and he got kicked off the show at its height of popularity. But for some reason, Hollywood still loved the guy, and gave him another series called Anger Management. This time he was a player as well, but at the same time he had a colleague with which he had a “no commitment” physical relationship. And that character was played by actress Selma Blair. The on-screen chemistry was there, but off screen, it was reported that Blair quickly lost favor with bigger star Sheen by showing up late for work and being lazy. Blair got written off the show. Can you believe Sheen was seen as the good guy this time?
5 Sean Young And Harrison Ford And Bill Murray And James Woods And Kevin Costner… And Tim Burton
Sean Young had a lot of opportunities to prove herself as an actress, but the co-stars willing to work with her got thinner and thinner with every new flick. Men that worked with her, including Harrison Ford, Bill Murray, Kevin Costner, James Woods, and Charlie Sheen, quickly labeled her “difficult.” Sheen got so pissed off during the filming of Wall Street, that he sneakily stuck a piece of paper on her back on the set that read: “I am the biggest c*nt in the world.” Murray refused to work with her “ever again” after his encounter with her in Stripes. Her bad reputation began to proceed her and even directors were avoiding casting her. She wanted to play Catwoman in Batman Returns and reportedly wanted it so bad that she found her own costume and went to the set to find director Tim Burton. According to legend, Burton hid in the bathroom to avoid her. Ouch!
4 Sharon Stone Tortured Her Co-Star
After Basic Instinct came out and blew people's mind with the sensuous scenes from actress Sharon Stone, producers rushed to put out another film with Stone by the same writer - Joe Eszterhas. The new film was Sliver. Apparently, Stone wasn't happy with the choice for leading man and her romantic interest, which was Billy Baldwin. So she allegedly tortured him during production. According to reports, during a kissing scene, she bit Baldwin's tongue so hard that he couldn't speak clearly for a week. Ouch! After that incident, the two often got into arguments on the set. Sliver didn't do that bad at the box office, earning more than $36 million, but it paled in comparison to Stone's previous film, Basic Instinct, which earned more than $117 million.
3 Debra Winger Didn't Think Much Of Richard Gere
An Officer and a Gentleman became a cult classic for the romantic. Some of the scenes with Debra Winger and Richard Gere still are favorites among lovers, especially the scene where he shows up at her job in full military uniform and scoops her up for a magical kiss. But in reality, the two did not care for each other one bit. That's acting! According to reports, Winger said kissing Gere was like kissing a brick wall. And in lieu of all the harassment cases popping up in Hollywood of late, we have to wonder if Winger was getting inappropriate treatment on the set of that iconic film, as she referred to its director - Taylor Hackford - as “an animal.” Winger and Gere's dislike has carried on for decades… in 2008, Winger was set to star on the Broadway version of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? Rumors were that producers reached out to Gere to play her husband, and the answer was reportedly, “Nah.”
2 Sophia Loren And Marlon Brando Put On A Good Act
She's considered one of the most beautiful and classic actresses of all time, and he is legendary as well. But behind-the-scenes, Sophia Loren and Marlon Brando were archenemies. According to legend, what started the ongoing feud was when Brando told Loren that he could see her nose hairs while they were doing a close up during filming. During that same film - A Countess From Hong Kong - Brando patted Loren on the backside in a way that she found offensive, and she told him: “Don't do that again, because I'm going to slap you right in your face.” But Brando allegedly continued to “bully” her, the actress reported in her memoir years later. After a kissing scene, he reportedly told her that her love for Italian food made her breath smell “worse than a dinosaur's.” And one time during a kiss, he reportedly bit her lip so hard that it drew blood. The two were never cast together again.
1 Marilyn Monroe Was Not Liked By Tony Curtis Or Laurence Olivier
Marilyn Monroe was arguably the greatest symbol of all time. She set a standard that many stars emulate today, including Gwen Stefani, Lady GaGa, and Madonna. The pouty look, the ruby red lips, and the curvaceous body were legendary. But according to some of her leading men, she wasn't easy to work with. In fact, Richard Widmark said of Monroe, despite a long kissing scene in their first movie together: “I like Marilyn, but she was God-awful to work with.” He wasn't the only one. Tony Curtis loathed her in romantic scenes in Some Like It Hot. He said kissing Monroe was awful. “It was like kissing Hitler.” Oh snap! Then there was Sir Laurence Olivier… who said he aged 15 years from working with her. Despite her sizzling presence on-screen, Monroe was known to show up late and was often “grubby and disheveled.” Dang. Who would have known?
