15 Celebs Who Broke Up With Each Other Before Being Happily Married
When two people elect to get together, their relationship can continue along one of four potential paths: 1) They remain together, forever (and hopefully happily!), 2) They eventually break up, for good, and go their separate ways, 3) They in time break up, permanently, but stay connected someway/somehow or 4) They ultimately break up… and then they make-up… and then they break up… and then… This last alternative-when individuals dissolve the relationship but then recommit to it-becomes particularly interesting when couples break up and make up again and again. Continual ending and renewing of a relationship is often called relationship cycling, and this dynamic can imperil the health and well-being of the relationship and its members.
While many on-again/off-again relationships changeover into stable partnerships, it remains an observational question as to why many of these relationships are full of such inconsistency. A lot, potentially, has to do with the parties being raised differently and having different beliefs, or/and not having enough in common or being too similar, etc. However, what we have learned from certain couples is that no matter what has happened in the past, love conquers all, and anything can be overcome. Here's proof - check out below 15 celebs who broke up with each other before being happily married.
15 Kate Middleton And Prince Will Were Once ROYAL Pains To Each Other
Prince William and Kate Middleton began dating in 2003 during their time at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. They dated until 2007 when they split up. Although Clarence House refused to comment about the breakup at the time, a biography later claimed that it was a mix of intense media attention, their busy schedules, and Will's carousing with other women. "We both were very young… we were sort of both finding ourselves as such and being different characters and stuff, it was very much trying to find our way and we were growing up, and so it was just sort of a bit of space and a bit of things like that and it worked out for the better," Will told the UK Press Association.
But as we've all come to learn, the William and Kate eventually reunified in June 2010 and were engaged on November 16th. They wed on April 29, 2011.
14 Chrissy Teigen And John Legend Sang The Blues ('Til They Reunited)
They may be the hottest couple on the web right now, however John Legend revealed in a past interview that his relationship with Chrissy Teigen was almost over after a particularly disagreeable day. "I was really stressed out and busy," Legend stated. "I was just like: 'I'd just be happier single right now.'"
Well, Teigen wasn't digesting that easily; she told him no, they were not breaking up. Teigen later tweeted specifying that she recognized that Legend was simply having a trying day. "It wasn't a a typical breakup," she tweeted. "He was on tour and his voice hurt and he was being a whiny face about everything and so yeah, I was like 'no.'" Knowing now how happy the couple is, their past troubles simply make for a bunch of entertaining dinner-table stories!
13 Hannah Lee Fowler And Sam Hunt Had To Lap Around The Track Once More
Hannah Lee Fowler and Sam Hunt dated on and off for about 10 years prior to reviving their romance in 2016. Sam opened up in a preceding interview about how hard he worked to get Hannah back, stating, "I think last Summer I went out [to Hawaii] about seven times in about three months… trying to talk to her about coming back," Sam said, adding, "And the seventh trip I convinced her."
Due to Hunt's unwavering persistence, the pair got engaged in January 2017 and were married three months later. We absolutely love stories like this, for they truly and utterly display that a person can achieve anything they set their mind to-marrying the love of their life included.
12 Behati Prinsloo And Adam Levine Almost Weren't A Team
Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo may be a merrily married couple and prideful parents today, but back in 2013 they terminated their bond in a pretty chaotic way. The pair began dating in 2012 after Levine called it off with Prinsloo's friend (and fellow Victoria's Secret model) Anne Vyalitsyna. Levine and Prinsloo went out until May 2013, when he supposedly began dating Sports Illustrated supermodel Nina Agdal (yes, basically Levine was a player player). Only, that relationship was transitory for Levine.
By July 2013, Levine and Prinsloo came back together and then got engaged. The two were married in June 2014, and Prinsloo gave birth to daughter Dusty Rose in September 2016. The couple are anticipating another child together soon. Big congrats to these two!
11 Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green (Luckily) Weathered The Storm
Brian Austin Green began his courtship of Megan Fox in 2004 (when Fox was merely 18 and Green was 30!). The two engaged in 2006, and appeared to be on a one-way street to marriage-until 2009 when they split. Fox was in the middle of a flourishing franchise with "Transformers" so inevitably whispers about their split and potential cheating spread like wildfire. However, Fox had a very simplistic justification for the breakup. "Marriage isn't a realistic goal for someone who is 23, that's all," she said at the time.
Their breakup was pretty short though, and the item ended up marrying in 2010 (when Fox was 24). They beared a son Noah together in 2012 and another named Bodhi in 2014. There seemed to be trouble in paradise once more after Fox filed for divorce in 2015. However in 2016, Fox became preggo again. Their divorce was put on pause and she gave birth to another baby boy named Journey. Since then, Green and Fox appear to be doing better than ever! We love it :'-)
10 Kristen Bell And Dax Shepard We're Monkeying Around For Awhile
Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard broke up early on in their relationship. Bell previously disclosed that (her now-husband) Dax Shepard in fact broke up with her not long after they began dating. "He sat me down and said, 'I can't have this right now. I think you're wonderful, but I am still dating other people,'" she said. "And then I, like, liquefied and fell to the ground, but I felt incredibly respected that he had the balls to tell me we weren't in the same place."
Naturally, shortly after, Shepard knew he made a big error. "He called me and he was like, 'I don't know what I was thinking. I was dating someone else but they're just not as interesting as you, and I don't know what I'm doing,' and he came back," Bell revealed. Shepard and Bell got married in 2013, however she said that she doesn't let him blank out that they nearly didn't marry. "But I still always remind him of when he broke up with me," she expressed.
9 Kristin Cavallari And Jay Cutler Were Soulmates (Obviously)
Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler had to walk through Hades with gasoline underpants on to get to where they are now! The pair began dating in 2010 and got then engaged. All was gravy on the biscuit for awhile… until they broke their engagement off in July 2011 and called off the wedding! Ouchy.
Cavallari later noted in her book "Balancing in Heels: My Journey to Health, Happiness, and Making It All Work," that she split up with Cutler in an effort to exhibit to him that she was more than serious about tackling their relationship issues and too because she did not desire to be a stay-at-home wife and mother. The pair at length attended therapy and got back together in January 2012. They married one another in 2013.
8 Gabrielle Union And Dwayne Wade Called A "Timeout"
Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade embarked on a very long road before reaching the alter, and one stop on their voyage enclosed a brief breakup. The actress and NBA future Hall of Famer began dating in 2009, but concisely split up in 2013. During that time, Wade allegedly fathered a child with Basketball Wives cast member Aja Metoyer. However, Wade and Union rekindled soon after; though, Wade said together they had to work out scheduling and past relationship shortcomings.
"We supported each other… but at the end of the day we came back together and [said], 'Listen, we want to continue this, we want to continue to try to get better each day,' and she's been with me, and I've been with her all summer long. We're going strong now," Wade said in an interview. Union and Wade were married in August 2014.
7 Jessica Biel And Justin Timberlake Weren't N'Sync For Awhile
Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel may keep on the hush about their passion now, but back in 2011, Timberlake was very public about how tough the separation from (his then-ex-girlfriend) Biel was. The item began dating in 2007 and hung up their kinship in March 2011.
A couple months later, in June, Timberlake gave a sorrowful interview about how much Biel truly meant to him. "She is the single-handedly most significant person in my life," he shared. "In my 30 years, she is the most special person, OK? So I protect it, and until somebody shows me what would be more fulfilling at this point, that's what I have to do." "I would rather not talk about her, because it's hurtful for me," Timberlake continued. It most likely didn't shock people when the couple reignited their flame in October 2011. The two married in October 2012 and have yet to look in the rear view mirror.
6 Pink And Carey Hart Simply Couldn't Stay Apart
Pink and Carey Hart are the lustrous illustration that two people can split apart and then come back stronger than ever! The pair have called it quits twice. They started dating in 2001, then broke up in 2003 for about a year. They came back together and get this: Pink actually proposed to Hart in 2005 at the Pro 250 class finals! Lesson learned ladies-when you want something, go get it NO MATTER what.
The couple were married in January 2006. Then, the pair publicly split in 2008, and Hart memorably surfaced in the music video for Pink's breakup anthem "So What." That should have been a sign that there was hope for a rapprochement, for in 2009, the two announced they were back together! Today, they have two kids together - Willow and Jameson.
5 Nicole Johnson And Michael Phelps' Relationship Almost Drowned
Michael Phelps and Nicole Johnson started dating in 2007 and had several breakups along the way - including one from 2011 to 2014. They were engaged in 2015, and, at the time, Phelps expressed how he always wanted to win Johnson back. "I said to a couple of my friends if I ever had the chance to get her back, that would be it," Phelps stated. "She was the one I loved the most."
Johnson, on the other hand, said that the couple needed to grow individually in order to have a strong relationship today. "Michael and I both know that had we tried to have a child and get married in the previous time we were together, it probably would not have ended pretty," she said. "We both had a lot of growing up to do." The pair had a son, Boomer, together in May 2016, and married on the qt in June 2016.
4 Shante Broadus And Snoop Dogg Almost Went Up In Smoke
Too on the list of couples that broke up like The Fat Boys and then got back together like the Spice Girls, is rapper Snoop Dogg and his high school sweetheart Shante. Snoop married Shante Taylor on June 12, 1997. But after a rough stint, Snoop Dogg and Shante called it quits and divorced in 2004.
Their love tale was far from done though. By 2008, the pair renewed their vows. They've been happily wed ever since. Though in 2016, Shante did take to Instagram to make it clear she wasn't pleased with her spouse. “All the singles ladies,” Shante captioned the IG photo. She quickly followed up with an additional photo captioned: "“Be with someone who will take care of you. Not materialistically but take care of your soul.” Yikes. As far as we know though, the two have moved on from their differences and are today blissfully married (we hope).
3 Tish Cyrus And Billy Ray Both Had Achy Breaky Hearts
Miley Cyrus' parents did not always have an American dream marriage. Billy Ray Cyrus and Tish Jean got married on November 28 1993, however Billy Ray filed for divorce on October 26 2010, citing irreconcilable differences. In a statement made the following day announcing the split, Billy and Tish said, "As you can imagine, this is a very difficult time for our family… We are trying to work through some personal matters. We appreciate your thoughts and prayers." Though on March 18, 2011, Billy Ray publicly announced that he had dropped the divorce. On June 13, 2013, Tish then filed for divorce from Billy Ray, citing irreconcilable differences. Yet, it was reported in July 2013 that the two had gone to couples therapy and reinvigorated their relationship.
These two have been on and off a few times since, but are still rolling strong as far as we know. Hopefully, lawd willing, it lasts!
2 Vanessa Lachey And Nick Were 98 Degrees Of Separation
Nick Lachey was embroiled in a very high-profile marriage - and then divided - from ex-wife Jessica Simpson. Though, you may draw a blank that he and (now-wife) Vanessa Lachey had a huge public breakup too. For a second, Lachey was in the news more than OJ was during his trial!
Vanessa and Nick began dating in 2006 and went separate ways in June 2009, affirming fans that they stayed "good friends" in spite. Evidently that was genuine, because by October 2009, the relationship was back on like a light switch. "I am happy in a relationship," Lachey stated. "I was single for a minute there, and then we've kind of patched things up." The joyous couple got hitched July 2011 and have three children together - Phoenix, Camden, and Brooklyn.
1 Vanessa Bryant And Kobe Had To (Literally) Pick The Ball Back Up
Kobe and Vanessa Bryant do not have a flawless celebrity relationship (who does!?), however the two found a way to make it work fortunately. Vanessa filed for a divorce on December 16, 2011 citing irreconcilable differences due to Kobe's adulterous relationships (including an accusation of intimate assault).
However, Bryant and his wife rectified and got back together in January 2013. Vanessa was geared up to bail on Kobe, taking a pretty hefty settlement along with her! Somehow though the pair managed to pull things together, making an announcement that they were calling off the divorce and giving their marriage another chance. We're sure, that purple diamond ring (worth $4 million) Kobe gave her as an apologetic gesture didn't hurt things either!
