The Best Drinking Games for Couples to Bond and Have Fun Together

Tired of the usual dinner and movie date? Why not try something different to spice things up? Something like these drinking games for couples.

When you first start dating someone, a night out turns into a few drinks at a cozy bar near your place. Pretty soon it turns into a night cap or a glass of wine with your significant other (SO), while watching Netflix. Drinking together can be fun and relaxing, but wouldn't it be awesome if you could turn it into something a little more exciting? Like a few drinking games for couples that's guaranteed to be loads of fun?

I've played a few drinking games in my time, but it usually happens when I'm with a group of friends or coworkers. There were instances when a guy I was dating was present-where I regretted having my friends along. It always turned out to be really fun and eye-opening.

    How do drinking games work?

Most drinking games revolve around dares and divulging secrets. This gives an opportunity to tell your date something new about yourself and vice versa. Unfortunately, since we were in a group, some topics were off-limits. Some questions needed to be answered with a lie. If alone with the guy I was dating, I would have been more open about the things I wanted to admit.

But that was in the past. Now, I am ready to try something new with the person I'm dating. Some of the drinking games I used to play aren't meant for just two people, so I looked around and found something a bit more intimate, but still extremely fun.

Getting ready to play a drinking game with your SO

Before I tell you about the drinking games I found, let me remind you that drinking a lot of liquor with your boyfriend or girlfriend is not the same as when you're with your friends. There are no referees, in case you disagree. It's possible you may not be able to control what you say after you get drunk.

So before you go trying these drinking games for couples, here are a few tips to remember:

#1 Eat a balanced meal. Drinking on an empty stomach is always a no-no. So is drinking after overeating. The best time to drink would be about half an hour after you eat dinner. Make sure you or your partner don't overeat. You don't want the game to end before it even gets to the good part, right?

#2 Establish some rules. Make sure you both know what you are getting into. Make a pact that whatever mistakes you make or things you say while playing these drinking games for couples, you try to discuss it with an open mind when you're finally sober.

Remind yourself you should avoid offending each other as well. For games that require you to tell each other secrets, make sure you both know there should be no judgment whatsoever.

#3 Know when to stop. Don't try to impress each other with your drinking skills. There is such a thing as alcohol poisoning, which leads to asphyxiation due to lack of oxygen, uncontrollable vomiting, and sometimes even a coma. Please DRINK MODERATELY.

The best drinking games for couples

Now, for the good part! Most of these drinking games for couples were invented by fellow drinkers and some of them were originally designed for groups of friends. I've taken the liberty of editing some of them to accommodate couples.

#1 Never Have I Ever. The game starts when one of you says the phrase, “Never have I ever… ” Then you add something you've never done before, like “… had sex in a public bathroom.” If your partner is guilty, they must take a shot.

The point of the game is to indirectly find out if your partner has done something you haven't. The more controversial the statement, the more exciting it gets.

If it happens neither of you are taking shots because both of you have never done anything adventurous, switch it up by saying, “Never have I ever… *insert an activity that you want to do*.” If your partner wants to do it too, you both take shots. If they don't, you're the only one who's going to take the shot.

#2 Beer Pong. The game is played on a table-preferably a ping-pong table to maintain authenticity-where glasses filled with beer are arranged in a certain pattern. The goal is to shoot a ping-pong ball into an opponent's glass. If you score, your opponent has to take a shot from the glass that the ball was in.

You have to drink it as it is, germs and all. For couples, do this at home and add a little spice by doing a dare or asking a personal question when someone scores.

#3 The Jenna Jameson Game. Here's a kinky, albeit strange, drinking game. You and your partner watch a porn video and take a shot whenever an actor mentions a body part or says the f-word. For the less adventurous, watch the first season of Game of Thrones while fast-forwarding, taking a shot whenever you see a Lannister *including the golden-haired Baratheons* or a pair of boobs.

#4 Straight Face. The game is played by writing different sentences on pieces of paper. You and your partner each write something hilarious or extremely outrageous on the paper. Whoever picks it out from the bunch will have to read it out loud. The goal is to keep a straight face. If either of you reacts in any way, be it a laugh, a yelp, or a groan, the person must take a shot.

#5 Drunken Artists. The game is played using anything that can be drawn on and something to draw with. Use a whiteboard, a piece of paper, your partner's body. Whatever it is, make sure your partner sees it clearly.

The game starts normally, with you and your partner guessing whatever it is the other is drawing. The artist draws something as quickly as possible. Why? Because the artist has to take a shot every twenty seconds until the other person guesses the drawing correctly.

Of course, your partner may try to cheat and play dumb so you drink more than they do. When that happens, you both take a shot after the drawing is finished, and you take your revenge on the next turn.

#6 I'm Going to the Bar. This is a drinking version of the popular game, “I'm Going on a Picnic.” The game starts when you or your partner utter the phrase, “I'm going to the bar to get… ” Let's say they pick “a shot of tequila.” The other person follows with the same line, but they're going to add another drink to the list. For example, “I'm going to the bar to get a shot of tequila and a gin and tonic.”

This goes on and on until someone makes a mistake or repeats a drink. By the time you get to the tenth drink, you'll probably be too drunk to continue.

#7 True or False Storytime. If you're familiar with Box of Lies, then you'll probably get how this game works. You and your partner write down various nouns on pieces of paper. When it's your turn, you tell a story that involves that noun. You either tell a true story or a fake one. Your partner guesses if it's true. If they're right, you take a shot. If they're wrong, they take a shot. Remember Tyrion's favorite drinking game on Game of Thrones? Yeah, this was probably where it came from.

#8 Drunk Relationship History. This is based off the YouTube short turned TV show, Drunk History. A couple who got married used the concept for their wedding video. It was awesome!

You start by drinking a whole bottle of liquor and proceed to retell your version of how you met your partner. You should do this together so you drunkenly correct each other during the game. It's even better if you shoot a video of the whole game so you can look back and have a laugh. Or use it as ammo for your next argument.
