15 Of The Craziest Celebrity Parties
Who doesn't like to party? It's like the old song goes: rock and roll all night, and party every day. These words of wisdom have affected everyone from teenagers to celebrities. And while not all famous folk abide by this statement, some do take it to heart. For these celebrities, this adage is their philosophy and way of life. From engagement parties to movie release parties, holiday soirees, and birthday extravaganzas, these celebrities are always looking for an excuse to let loose and get wild! Some of them stick with the big-budget-but-intimate affairs, choosing to drop a pretty penny for twenty of their closest friends. And some even take it to the extreme, with parties that last for four days and feature rave tents and circus acts. We've taken the best of the biggest bashes and compiled them into one comprehensive list. Find out who's the biggest party animal, and have fun imagining yourself at one of these grand balls!
15 Beyonce
Of course, Beyonce kicks off this list! Her style and pizzazz always top the charts, and there's no reason why her parties should be any different. While there's no shortage of glamor in her day-to-day life, she still manages to up the ante and go all out on parties for herself. But, the craziest party she's ever thrown wasn't just for her… It was for her Mom! When Beyonce's mom turned 60, Beyonce decided to honor her like the supreme queen she is. This New Orleans-style party stretched the limits of extravagance. With guests arriving in elaborate masks and gowns, the masquerade theme added more than a dash of magic to the party. Other sprinkles of magic were dropped on guests when the marching band started to decorate the sky with music. The elaborate group performed classic party tunes, adding some quirkiness to the ball. And it wouldn't be a real ball without a horse and carriage! Guests rode into the party on horse-drawn carriages, which pushed the price tag of this party well over $100,000. We can't wait to see what Beyonce will do for her mom's 70th!
14 Jimmy Stewart
Bachelor and bachelorette parties are among the most wild and ridiculous of all the different types of parties. While we've all seen the movies that spin tales of bachelors' wild abandon and bad choices, not every bachelor party ends in cheating (or death). Sometimes bachelor parties are truly classy and extravagant affairs, with waterfalls of alcohol and fancy, fresh food for all invited. Jimmy Stewart, a famous actor who starred in movies such as Rear Window, It's a Wonderful Life, and Vertigo, was one of these extravagant bachelor's prior to his marriage to Gloria Hatrick McLean. This Academy Lifetime Achievement Award winner's bachelor party was one of the most extravagant at the time. Featuring lots of lights, music, and dancing. Stewart also insisted on having little people pop out of cakes at different points throughout the night. While not safe or politically correct nowadays, it must have been a sight to see!
13 Kim Kardashian and Kanye West
You've probably heard of these two, right? This power couple seems to win everything; awards, entertainment news, and red carpet fashions. They'd also win most extravagant party awards if there was such a thing. These two set the bar high for any couple that comes after them. Yes, gentlemen, if you want to match Kanye's style, you'll have to give your Kim the craziest party she's ever seen. Kanye chose to celebrate Kim's birthday with the most impractical cake in the history of the world. Dripping in real diamonds, Kim's birthday cake cost close to $1 million. The rest of the party was just as much of a splurge, with bottles of champagne and decorations that wowed guests beyond belief. The total price tag didn't stop with the cake, though. Between food, entertainment, and alcohol, the party wracked up a solid $12 million. You'd think for that much Kim would have at least gotten a cake she could eat instead of wear!
12 Elton John
When you're as rich and famous as Elton John, you can afford to have all your parties planned for you. But, if you happen to be Elton John, you come up with the most ridiculous party themes possible yourself. The singer/songwriter had hits such as "Piano Man", "Tiny Dancer", and "Bennie & the Jets". Such creative genius spilled over into his personal life, with elaborate birthday parties throughout his life. The most exciting, however, was arguably his 50th birthday party. At this party, he invited five hundred of his close friends and entertained all of them with the theme of Louis XIV. His costume was a beautiful silver outfit dripping with feathers and French culture. Due to it being set in the time period of Louis XIV, he also had an extravagant wig. This wig was so huge it had to be carried in on a moving truck while sitting on its own special throne. Talk about making an entrance!
11 The Sultan of Brunei
You might not have heard of him before, but no doubt you've heard of the musical star he booked for his 50th birthday party. Back in 1996, the Sultan was hip to the most popular western music at the time. For his 50th he decided he wanted a private concert by one of the most famous musicians in the world. He chose to book Michael Jackson for his party, which excited guests and made the whole world jealous. Can you imagine having a private performance by the late Mr. Jackson? The Sultan will forever hold bragging rights for that escapade, and his guests will forever remember it as the craziest party they've ever been to. The private concert was accented with the world's most expensive caviar and champagne, as well as elaborate decorations and beautiful outfits. While we haven't heard of any parties since that blend caviar and pop music, there are other crazy parties featuring private concerts ahead!
10 Paris Hilton
While not the craziest 21st birthday we've heard of (that's further down the list), Paris Hilton's party gave her more air mileage than any other party. You'd expect the heiress to go all out, but she did it in a way that brought the world together. Instead of choosing to party in just one of her family's hotels, she chose five of them! She flew back and forth from New York, Las Vegas, Tokyo, London, and Los Angeles; more travel than some people do in their entire lives! Hilton cleverly made the time zones work to her advantage, stretching her party out into one really long night, and one extremely long day. The drinking, dancing, and decorations changed with each place, but some of the guests stayed the same. Each guest's price tag was upwards of $75,000 CAD each. She must really love her friends, and no doubt her friends love her!
9 Bill Murray
We all know how dinner parties are supposed to work. It's like Grandma's holiday dinners! You show up, sit down, have a good meal and some good conversation… Right? Not in this case! Bill Murray, famous from movies such as Ghostbusters and Lost in Translation, has a story about an unconventional dinner party he crashed back in the 1970s. One night he and his group of fellow actors and friends were doing a show in a restaurant. It turns out this restaurant was also catering the subway stop party for the opening of Tommy, the musical. Murray and friends were snuck into this party through the back door by the caterers. When in, they came across truly legendary stars like Andy Warhol and Elton John (who appear earlier in this list). Andy Warhol later embarrassed him by telling the young Murray that he didn't belong at the party. What an incredible experience that would have been!
8 Richard Branson
While you might not recognize his name right away, this billionaire is someone you won't forget after reading this list. He made his fortune working in business and investment. While sometimes we think of businessmen as being cold and calculating, Branson is anything but. Another one of those kind, rich folks, one year Branson decided that he and his mom should have a joint birthday party. The only catch was that his mom was already turning 90! If you know any 90-year-olds, you know that sometimes they aren't the most active and energetic individuals. Lucky for Branson, his mom was a lucky lady who survived with all her chutzpah. Maybe it's Branson who keeps her young, as the party took place on his private Caribbean retreat… A great place to rest and rejuvenate. It's also a great place to eat rocket-shaped birthday cake, which was brought out with a display of fireworks. If that's what he did with her for her 90th, imagine how her 100th will look!
7 Yves St Laurent
Fashion icons have to be a little crazy to come up with such wild looks. Even if you aren't interested in fashion, it's likely you've heard of the famous Yves St Laurent. This designer has created more art than clothing, and also worked to release perfume and cologne scents. One of the most famous was his Opium scent. Back in 1978, this name caused a lot of turmoil in Chinese-American communities and Asian countries, due to the long history of opium and its usage in the culture of Chinese-Americans. Yves St Laurent only went so far as to take the name of the drug, and not anything about its history. He also pushed the appropriative envelope even further with his release party for the scent. Featuring a one thousand pound Buddha statue, constructed Chinese temples, fireworks, and Hawaiian orchids, the theme was more appropriate then than it would be now. Several hundred people attended this party, making it one of the biggest designer release parties in history. While you might expect this to have happened on land, the final aspect of this party that made it so crazy was the fact that it also featured a yacht, where most of the actual partying happened!
6 Prince
Is it any surprise that Prince is on a list of crazy parties? No! This artist committed to everything he did, including hosting parties. With his large home, he had plenty of space to host everyone who wanted to show up… And show up people did! Hordes of people came out to Prince's 2 am pajama party, which was not only open to his friends but also fans. He requested that everyone appear in pajamas, as it was going to be slumber-party themed. So many people appeared that the party mainly took place in Paisley Park, which was close to his home. In this park, they'd managed to structure a stage that Prince then performed on! This multi-talented hostess with the mostess stayed with the slumber party theme and fed guests with pancakes, which rounded up the night on a delicious end note. Can you imagine a crazier time than a Prince-and-Pancakes-Pajama-Party?! We can't!
5 Nicolas Cage
Sometimes it seems like movie stars have an endless supply of money. While this isn't quite true, partiers like Nicolas Cage don't help to break that stereotype. The Christmas party he hosted back in 2003 is one for the ages and cost him… more than he'd like to admit. Guests to the party were greeted by enormous, larger-than-life nutcracker guards on either side of the door. Dinner was really cool, served on tables carved from ice. And of course, it wouldn't be a complete winter wonderland without the snow. Did he decide to put spray snow on the windows? Fake snow drifts on the mantel? No! He went all out and hired a production team to drop fake snow on the guests as they partied well into the night. Guests declared it was the greatest party ever, though it got chilly. We can only hope Mr. Cage warns everyone to dress warmly before his next holiday bash.
4 Miley Cyrus
A Miley Cyrus party is everything you'd expect a Miley Cyrus party to be. This means it's crazy, hilarious, fun, and freeform. While she organized very little, Miley Cyrus still manages to be the talk of the town with her party throwing skills. While everyone expects a 21st birthday party to be ridiculous, Cyrus's quite literally takes the cake. One of the big features of her 21st birthday party was a life-size cake replica of Cyrus herself. Was this replica dressed in her favorite outfit? Decorated to look like a favorite cartoon character? No! The cake was a nude replica with conveniently placed maryj leaves on all the cake's important bits. Other highlights of her 21st birthday include rooms full of blow-up dolls, a huge Lorax, and strippers. It sounds like this happy hippy got everything she wanted for her birthday, and it's not likely the guests will forget anytime soon.
3 Kate Moss
Who would have suspected that Kate Moss was such a party animal? This supermodel seemed to have super powers when she was young. When she would go out with friends the vodka would flow like Niagara Falls. While she had grown out of her really wild days by the time this party came around, her biggest and most outrageous bash happened to be her 40th birthday. At an age where many people have to think about starting to slow down, Moss ramped her energy up with a birthday party for the books. Walking through this crazy scene, the party goers found a festival-style layout of rave tents featuring music, dancing, and wild lights. Going further into the party you could find tarot card readings predicting the future, fire-eaters shocking and exciting guests, and excessive amounts of drugs and alcohol. This might seem like a lot for one night, but don't worry… In true party animal spirit, Moss dedicated 4 days to this party. One for each decade!
2 Andy Warhol
Warhol was alive and kicking in mid-20th century America. This was a time when drugs, art, and rock'n'roll were the highlights of almost everyone's life. While Warhol himself was a little more quiet and subdued, his art more than made up for it. The famous screen printer and painter did works such as the Marilyn Diptych and Campbell's Soup Cans. Most of his work was produced in his studio space known as The Factory. The Factory not only churned out visual art, however, but wild stories as well. The place of many parties, Warhol's landlords would say that The Factory was just one long party from the 60s-70s. Many famous friends would filter in and out at all times of the day and night. When there wasn't wild, amphetamine-flavoured intimacy happening, there was experimental art being made. Warhol was a genius, and with genius often comes eccentricity. Thank goodness his wild side made for plenty of fun!
1 Hugh Hefner's Roller Disco and Pyjama Party
Even the name sounds ridiculous. Hugh Hefner is one of the granddads of partying. His playboy mansion has been the location of many wild nights, days, and weeks spent partying it up. His Playboy Bunnies keep the energy high, while Hugh acts as a gracious and gritty host. His palace of people has been the highlight of many lives; both those who have been there in the flesh and those who have just seen the famous Playboy magazine. While there's too many parties to add them all to this list, one of his most famous was his televised Roller Disco and Pajama Party. The party itself wasn't anything unusual: scantily clad women, upbeat music, and sleepover shenanigans created a sexy atmosphere. However, the fact that it was televised and turned into an ABC special makes it the craziest party we've ever heard of. Just imagine turning on the TV and seeing Mr. Hefner and Bunnies having a pillow fight! Wild!
