15 Of The Best TV Love Triangles
Love triangles totally make the television world go round. Don't you agree?! Think about what a classic 90s teen drama like Dawson's Creek would be if Joey didn't have to choose between Pacey and Dawson, or what the current season of Grey's Anatomy would be without Meredith and Maggie liking the same guy. These two shows wouldn't have the same dramatic oomph and a whole bunch of other series wouldn't feel the same, either. Love triangles are a thing and they are the best. Sure, sometimes they're not interesting at all because you don't want any of the characters to be together, but when they're done right, you're just as torn as the people on your TV screen are. You wish that the guy or girl in the middle could be with both potential love interests. Yup, that's the marker of a successful AF love triangle. Here are the 15 best TV love triangles from sitcoms and dramas.
15 Maggie/Riggs/Meredith On 'Grey's Anatomy'
Another awkward love triangle. On the current season of the Shondaland drama, Maggie tells Meredith that she's super into Riggs… and Meredith has to hide the fact that, oops, she's got a crush on him too (and he likes her, not Maggie). It's not something that she wants to tell her sister and even if Maggie was only a friend or coworker, that would still be pretty bad. You're torn about this because on the one hand, you get that Riggs and Meredith have some connection and some chemistry. It would be nice if Meredith could move on from Derek and find love again. On the other hand, you can't even begin to think about her dating someone else. It definitely feels like a betrayal. You would also really enjoy seeing Maggie find love and a stable relationship, and you can see why she's got the hots for Riggs. He's nice, he's smart, and he's mature enough for her. Yup, you're pretty torn over this situation.
14 Richard/Monica/Chandler On 'Friends'
You love Monica and Chandler together. It was a shock when they stared dating… but seemed totally meant to be and inevitable at the same time, and that's the best. You do love Richard and Monica as a couple, though, because they're both sweet and they're a cute match. When she dates Chandler, you don't really think about Richard because you know that this seems like the best relationship for both of them. But you know that Monica still wonders what could have been if she had stayed with Richard and if she really should have let their age difference upset her and get in the way, since that's what lead to their splitting up. Love triangles may seem more common on dramas than on sitcoms, but this is one love triangle that's pretty dramatic even though it's taking place on one of the funniest shows ever.
13 Peter/Alicia/Will on 'The Good Wife'
This was a super interesting love triangle, right? You may have thought that you never wanted Alicia to be with Peter since he cheated on her and betrayed her in the most public way possible, and that whole scandal landed him in jail. You definitely wanted Alicia and Will to be together for real and were going crazy thanks to all the tension between them in almost every single episode. It was so obvious to you and the other loyal fans, so why couldn't they just be together already?! When they finally did hook up, it was amazing… but sadly, they never ended up making things official. And then, of course, Will died. Ugh. You still can't get over this sad moment and it's not something that you like to even think about. After a while, it seemed like Peter maybe wasn't the horrible person that you thought that he was, and that maybe Alicia did want to be with him again. This love triangle was awkward and confusing for sure.
12 Matty/Jenna/Jake On 'Awkward'
Did you want Jenna to end up with Matty? Or Jake? Like most fans of the MTV comedy Awkward, which sadly isn't on the air anymore, you probably were dreaming of a Jenna/Matty reunion in the series finale, but unfortunately, that just wasn't meant to be. You probably have gone back and forth about Jenna's love life. When she's with Matty, she's super happy and it's all good. You feel like they're BFFs and soulmates and it's all very hot and attractive. When she's with Jake, they can't seem to stop making out and he's just a really sweet dude. It's impossible to think that Jake would make a bad boyfriend. Since a good love triangle is one where you want the person in the middle to date both potential partners, this is definitely one for the ages and will go down in TV love triangle history.
11 Spike/Buffy/Angel On 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer'
You love Buffy and Angel. That's just a fact of life and pop culture. But… a part of you enjoys seeing Buffy date Spike, mostly because it was a massive surprise when it happened and you didn't hate it. You figured that you would, but you just couldn't. Because they weren't the worst couple. They were pretty good together. But… Angel. But… Spike. That's pretty much how your thought process goes when you think about Buffy and her love interests. It doesn't matter that this popular and beloved show is off the air and that it's been a while since the series finale aired, you still wonder about who Buffy should have ended up with. It's just part of your mind at this point. Most fans would say that they think that Angel is the one for Buffy, but others would definitely choose Spike over him, so the struggle is definitely real. This isn't a question that even really has an answer, but it still feels super important.
10 Logan/Veronica/Duncan On 'Veronica Mars'
Veronica Mars is one of the best shows out there, and you definitely became a massive fan of Kristen Bell when you binge-watched this show as fast as humanly possible. Because that's really the only way to watch this show. Duncan is Veronica's high school boyfriend who's part of the popular crowd. Logan is the bad boy who steals her heart, as bad boys tend to do. That's pretty much their requirement for existing and their full-time job. So what makes this not only a good and successful love triangle but a totally epic one at that? The fact that Logan and Duncan are best buddies. Yup. It's super awkward and dramatic and just the best thing ever to watch. Chances are, although you get that Duncan is cute and all, you really want Veronica to be with Logan. That doesn't mean you're not still a tiny bit torn, of course, because there are things about Logan that are great and there are things that make him seem very immature. It's a pretty exhausting relationship.
9 Jack/Kate/Sawyer On 'Lost'
Remember this love triangle?! It probably brings back a ton of memories, along with how much you enjoyed binge-watching this show (or watching it in real time and trying to avoid your best friends giving you spoilers, which wasn't quite so fun). You love seeing Kate and Jack together. They have a real connection and really seem like they would be a good couple. You get the feeling that if they had met in the real world aka off the island, they would have gotten married and had a family and the house and the white picket fence and the whole deal. But then you think about Kate and Sawyer and you realize that they have a good connection too. This is the classic love triangle that's got a girl-next-door type, a boy-next-door type, and a bad boy thrown into the mix. You probably have your preference for who she should really be with, though.
8 Emmett/Bay/Travis On 'Switched At Birth'
While the Freeform (formerly ABC Family) show has aired its series finale, its best and biggest love triangle is going to live on forever. Because as a fan, you can't tell who you want Bay to be with, even though she ends the show still happily in love with Travis. Yes, you love Travis. Yes, he's super sweet and adorable and treats her well, and after all of the drama that Bay has gone through in her life, that's good enough for you. But then… there's Emmett. They have an epic love story and although their history is not super happy and they've hurt each other more than they wanted to or even meant to, you have to wonder if there's still a chance. Since Travis and Emmett have been best friends and even basically brothers, since Travis moved in with Emmett and his lovely mom a while ago, that adds another complicated and dramatic layer.
7 Juliet/Sawyer/Kate On 'Lost'
Yup, Lost had two love triangles and they both featured Sawyer in a starring role. He dates Juliet while they're living in the community formed by the Dharma Initiative and, oh yeah, have traveled back in time to the 1970s. No big deal. Happens all the time. When they start hooking up, you honestly think that they are the best couple ever and you are really on board. You can't even imagine that either one of them would ever be with anyone else. It just doesn't seem possible because their romance is total and utter perfection. But then… you remember Kate. You remember how hot Kate and Sawyer are together. You remember their lovely connection and want them to be together again. Then you remember Juliet. Yeah, this is a tricky situation and it's not a love triangle that can ever really be solved. But you wouldn't expect anything less from such a confusing (but wonderful) show.
6 Luke/Lorelai/Christopher On 'Gilmore Girls'
Is this a true love triangle? Well, kind of. On the one hand, whenever Lorelai is with Christopher, you know that she's had a huge crush on Luke since forever and you wonder when they're going to realize that they're in love with each other. On the other hand, it's not like she's dating them at the same time or cheating on them or anything like that. Lorelai just doesn't do that. She's the best. When Luke and Lorelai are together, Christopher is always at the back of Lorelai's mind because he's always that person for her. She's always wondered what her life would have been like if they had gotten married back when they learned when she was pregnant like their families wanted them to, or if they had gotten together a few years later. But they're not really competing, so it's kind of a unique situation.
5 Peyton/Lucas/Brooke On 'One Tree Hill'
You know that Lucas and Peyton end up together and live happily ever after, which is totally the only way that this could ever go. You just wouldn't have been able to handle it if they never saw the light. But you still adore the love triangle between Peyton, Lucas, and Brooke. You always thought that Lucas and Brooke were not the best match ever and that she was only dating him because she went through a super insecure, boy crazy phase back in high school. As soon as you saw Brooke fall in love with Julian, you knew that she had found her guy and that was that. She probably barely even gave her relationship with Lucas a second thought. Every time that you watch this glorious teen show again or even think about it, you can't help but smile at this love triangle. It definitely made things interesting.
4 Rory/Dean/Jess On 'Gilmore Girls'
When Jess shows up in Stars Hollow in the second season of Gilmore Girls, Rory is still dating and in love with Dean. It's a classic bad boy/boy next door type of deal and Rory totally falls for Jess, even if she doesn't totally realize that this is what's happening. She and Jess bond over their shared love of books and while that's something that she does share with Dean, it's not really the same. Dean, of course, absolutely hates Jess and makes things really complicated and difficult for Rory. It's impossible to watch this season and not wonder whether Rory should be with Dean or break up with him so she can explore her connection with Jess. It's an epic love triangle that holds true today, since the whole question about the Netflix revival was whether Rory would be with Dean, Jess or her later boyfriend Logan.
3 Kelly/Dylan/Brenda On 'Beverly Hills 90210'
Oh man. This is perhaps the most classic love triangle of all, since it took place on the classic teen drama Beverly Hills 90210 from back in the 90s. When Dylan and Brenda are dating near the beginning of the series, they are super into each other. There's even a hilarious (and pretty relatable) episode about how they can't even go out in public without being all over each other and feeling the need to make out. Totally been there, right?! Later, Brenda goes on a trip to Paris… and Dylan finds comfort in Kelly. You're super pissed off when you watch this storyline because you totally believe in the romance that is Brenda and Dylan. But then you feel like maybe it's not the worst thing in the world because Kelly and Dylan are pretty cute together, too. They've grown up together and have a real connection because they both have pretty terrible family lives and they had difficult, lonely childhoods. This is the love triangle that keeps on giving when you think about it because it seems to come up time and time again because even though Dylan and Kelly are together for a long time, he's always referencing Brenda.
2 Spencer/Caleb/Hannah On 'Pretty Little Liars'
This is a pretty new love triangle but still deserves some credit because it's really fascinating. You were super torn when you watched this, right?! You love Caleb and Hannah as a couple. They have been so cute together and really love each other, and it was horrible to see them apart. When you found out that Caleb and Spencer had been hanging out in D.C. and that they were clearly attracted to each other, you were torn. You wondered if you could ever be okay with this and if you could really see them together. When they did hook up, you had to admit that it was pretty awesome, and that you kind of forgot all about Hanna. Well, at least for a minute. This is a good love triangle since now that Hanna and Caleb have found their way back to each other, you realize that, oh yeah, you always believed in them. But… he and Spencer were so good together. Super tricky.
1 Dawson/Joey/Pacey On 'Dawson's Creek'
Are you thrilled that Joey ended up with Pacey in the Dawson's Creek series finale, or do you think that she should have been with Dawson forever and ever? This is a totally controversial question, which you definitely know if you're a fan. There are two potential ways for you to view this love triangle: you have always thought that Joey and Dawson are soulmates on the level of Romeo and Juliet and that they should be together, or you are happy that she's found love and happiness with Pacey. But no matter where you stand, there's a part of you that wonders if she should be with the other option. It's a thing. Chances are, you've come around and are happy about her and Pacey, but you still think it's a really successful love triangle that can start some pretty epic debates between you and your equally 90s teen drama obsessed BFFs.
